Banks
« on: 27 Sep 2012, 06:16:50 »
Hello. I am new to playing Mine-craft online and  have a few questions. How do I deposit money in a bank? (if I can) What is the difference between teleporting to the mines and walking into the wilderness?  I thought one would be able to mine in the wilderness. I have looked at the guides section(probably overlooked what I want) and cannot find what I am looking for-mainly what to do where to go in the first days of gameplay. Also, when I am walking around, why does the surrounding area take so long to load? I can see the caverns and mines before the ground loads in. Sorry these questions are so basic, but I think they will get better.

I hear you, Matt! The first days were rough for me too, coupled with the unfamiliar elements of multiplayer Minecraft. Umm. To clear up the difference between mining and "Wilderness"-- they are two different worlds. It's true that you can mine on both of them; but in the Main World, Wilderness areas can be "claimed," and that's how towns are built. Meanwhile, in the Mining World, no land can be claimed; in fact, the Mining World resets periodically (each month?). Wish I could've known that before building a base there :p

Umm. Alternatively, you could go town-hopping (type /t list and /t spawn [town name]). (Teleports you to different towns; have a look around!) You can ask for town assistants/mayors to make you a resident, allowing you to buy a plot. (Each town has different prices). You'll have protection for your home because of the perms, which, to reiterate, can't be done in Mining World.

Ohh yeah. The bank--- your own personal bank account is not physical, but you can check the balance by typing /money or /res [your in-game name]. You can '/sell' what you've mined, and it automatically updates your balance. Even towns have collective banks; and once you're in a town you can do /t deposit [amount] to make a contribution as a resident.

Hope this helped :D

Banks:
The town- and nationbanks are no banks where you deposit money for yourself. They are basically the towns or nations budget. Towns need this budget to buy outposts, claim more land ot simply pay for town-projects (like public spawners and farms). If a towns or nations budget hit' s 0 it will loose it' s status as town/nation. The building will be kept (that has been different a few month ago, the admins thankfully changed that), but everything in the town will then be in the wilderness and the bonueses of living in a town will be lost.
Your personal money is stored in your "wallet", you can see that with either /player or /money. If you want to see a tradingspartners money you can do that with "/player name". It will also show you his town and other informations.

Miningworld:
The miningworld will be reset every month, the main world not. So everything you do in the mainworld will stay forever. For that reason some towns (like DragonFire) have a strict "no mining around town" rule, because every tunnel you dig might ruin future townplots as the town expands.
There is also the point that thanks to many xrayers many diamonds in the mainworld are already mined, while the miningworld has higher chances to find them (especially after each reset). And since the mainworld is older than the last update there are no emeralds in the mainworld, those only exist in the miningworld.

Loading of terrain:
That is a technical issue with minecraft that can even occur in singleplayer. There' s nothing you can do about that.

What to do in the first days:
  • A. You can live in the wilderness and play basic survival there. I would suggest that you use the first days to get some food and then try to get as far away from the spawn as possible. The more distance you get between you and the spawn (and the big towns) the better the wilderness will look (untouched trees and such) and the safer you will be from griefs (btw. if you still get griefed type /grief next to the damage and the mods will take care of that). What you shouldn't do is living in the wilderness right next to a town, this town might plan to actually expand in that direction and you would either ruin that plan or force you to move (might depend on the case and what the admins think of it; if it was obvious that you were settling in a towns expansionzone they might decide in favor of the town).
  • B. You can join a town and by 2-4 plots there (4 is the servers limit of plots you can own anywhere; some towns are limiting themselfes to 2 plots). The joining process is simple, you can either ask randomly in the chat if any mayor or townassistants(TA) are recruiting atm.. OR you look in the townforum here and take a look at the towns first, then you can look up with "/town townname" who the mayor or TAs are and ask them for an invite. I would recommend the second way as a town carefully choosen is often giving you more fun than a random town you might leave after a few days.
Take a carefull look at the towns rules as some towns are taking them seriously, so you shuould make sure you are fine with them.
You should also look at what a town is offering, townfarms, townspawners, etc. and what the nation is offering .i.e. each town in the Draconia nation (leader. TwistedLover) has access to some of DragonFires assets (like a Skeletonspawner (also spider & zombie) and some big farms. For the assets of the Scotland nation you'd have to ask BuckieUK09, and there are also Ravenhelm, Yunaiteddo and Seaside (but I don't know who you could ask there about their assets).
There are also different prices and limits on plots (some towns take 200 for each plot and allow you 4 plots, oters ask for 1000 for a plot or limit you to 2 plots), of course "cheap and more" doesn't necessarily mean better, if the more expensive town has to offer you a more fitting athmosphere (each town feels different - some have a young and hyperactive population, other are more laidback and mature (which some peole might find boring, while others find it relaxing), others might be snobby and proud, ... there' s a town for every taste (and age) out there, you just have to find it.
Oh yes, and of course you could also make a thread in the townforum where you put in your preferences for a town and ask which ones might think they would fit you.

eidt: UmmFredFelizco has written his post while I was making mine, so I'm sure he already said most of what I'm saying here.

So the bank in Noobstown? (where we first spawned) only collects donations? Does this mean I lose my money when I die? It was tough restarting at 0.

The bankbuilding in Noobtown itself is not really a bank, it' s just an enderchest with decorations around it.
And you keep your money when you die, you only lose items (unless you fall to your death; not sure if you still keep them when you die in pvp).

You keep your items and your experience when you die of : Falling, Void Falls, and PvP.
You do NOT keep your items and your experience if you die by : Drowning, Mobs, and Suffocation.

The town of Empire is not recruiting atm.

Thanks for the great answers!

I have managed to figure out a couple of more things (like I can not teleport to a x-y-z co-ordinate set), but I still have a few questions. Is there a "guide book" online somewhere? I have read through most of the Tutorial section but there are references to things that aren't explained.
More of my Noob questions:
1.How do I use the chat screen?
2.How do  find the towns? I would like to wander through some of them and the surrounding area leading to my next question-Ok, i just figured out TP from town to town. Ummfred...'s answer finally made it into my stubborn head
3.Is there a map of the world? I crafted a map but it doesn't show anything. Did I do something wrong? :P I read something about a Map being created in one of the Forum's, but it had been turned off.
4.I have young children and sometime I get pulled away from from the game unexpectedly. Does /AFK protect me from monsters? Does hitting esc protect me? or should I disconnect for a few minutes to protect myself?

I'm sorry for so many questions. Hopefully, this will take care of any questions from me for a while.

Oh, uhhh by the way, I was starting to build something in main world, set a chest, put a few things in it, thought I had reset home, but ended up by spawn point. I didn't have my coordinates :O. Is there any way a mod can get those co-ordinates for me? If you cann't, that's cool. All part of the game.

Thanks again.

Umm, press "t" or hit enter to activate the chat screen.

Then, as far as maps, there's a Mini-map mod[ification] that can be downloaded for the game. It readily shows you the layout of your current local area, which is more useful than a crafted map (in which case, you'll have to walk around and explore). (Google "rei's minimap" or "zan minimap" and the instructions to install them).

Umm. /afk doens't protect you from monsters, unfortunately. But you can protect yourself before doing /afk by quickly elevating yourself on a one-block column 3-4 blocks high, or finding a well-lit area.

Remember, /home tp's you to the home point (default is spawn), but /sethome resets it. I made the same mistake as you did on my first day! :) I ended up making another base elsewhere, but I found my original one after a while.

EDIT: Pressing enter will close the chat window, not activate it. The forwardslash, '/', is the other key that opens up the chat, with '/' being typed in already, for commands.

Thanks Ummfredfelizco!
I have installed Rei's mini map and it looks good. Tried to go to Noobstown but got a server error logging in. I noticed a message on the home page about out of date mods causing this. I also noticed only 5 people on the server so I am guessing (sort of hoping) server issues. Thanks for all your help.
