I noticed that in the little "online on site" thing, it lists "spiders". What are they and why are they crawling around the site? And will they kill me?

Those are unregistered visitors I believe.

They are normally web crawling bots such as the Google listings bot, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler)
