Title: why can i not breed animals

i have chickens and i tried to breed them but it is not working.  is it not allowed or is it just my computer lagging

its because we are in minecraft 1.4.2
you need to feed chickens with seeds

Additionally, pigs are fed carrots now in order to breed :)
