Title: Our next Mars Probe - MAVEN
Post by: 86maxsmart on 15 Nov 2013, 19:27:31
This is for all you space buffs out there (Xavier!).  We are only a couple days away from the launch of MAVEN here from Cape Canaveral.  You can get info on the spacecraft and it's mission and track the countdown activities here...

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/maven/main/index.html (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/maven/main/index.html)

You can watch live launch coverage on NASA tv or spaceflightnow.com beginning around 3 hours prior to launch (1:28 E.S.T) Monday.

Trivia question for all you buffs.  Chuck Tatro, shown under the "latest features" section is wearing a special suit.  Do you know what we call those suits (hint: it's a cute animal name - suit) and why he is wearing it?  I used to work with Chuck when we both were Launch Site Integration Managers a few years back.

Go MAVEN!

Ur silly.  No they use those suits to prevent cross-contamination.  Hair, skin, tiny fabric particles, oils from our skin can contaminate the spacecraft and cleanroom.  That is why he is wearing the bunny-suit.

Max, I have a random question, kinda off of this topic, but still space related.. I heard there's going to be four people going to live on mars to begin the process of making it livable with plants and stuff and they will live the rest of their life there, am I totally off on this story or is that actually happening? I could be totally wrong, but it would be cool if you could tell me some more on it ;)

I don't know very much more than you Jay.  Certainly, NASA won't be sending humans to Mars anytime soon.  There are so may things wrong with the current state of NASA, there is just no way we can accomplish such a task.  There are several non-governmental, commerical ventures that have been floating around for some time.  The most notable and the one I think you are referring is Mars One.  You can read more about their mission here...

It certainly would be exciting to see them succeed.  Who knows, maybe you'll be one of the crew.  :D

Terraforming is one way.  We could send plants to Mars.  Carbon dioxide is a major component of the atmosphere there and plants convert CO2 to Oxygen.  I'm making it simpler than it really is and it would take a long, long time, but basically plants could make the air breathable for humans.

Terraforming is a good idea, but there are many other factors you would have to deal with. Temperature fluctuations, soil fertility, gravitational fields, etc. Then there is the terrain you would have to deal with. I think humanity's best bet would be to research those and build new tech.

They will meet aliens and they will provide the technology. (I'm a alien, I'm on mars atm :B )

I hope they will meet aliens anyway, It would be very interesting to see what they look like, what technology do they have. :D

Yeah, but what if they're hostile aliens with technology that greatly exceeds ours? Humans will be X/ (if you know what I mean)

ik it would take a looooong time, you'd have to plant the plants and water them each day, and if mars has no air that would take a long time and youd have to take water from earth and send it there, although that might help get the water level down  from Antarctica melting.

Thanks Max. I missed that we were launching a probe to Mars. (I still remember watching the Voyager launches on TV). I'm glad there are people looking to the future.

Terra-forming is beyond our technology, for now, and certainly beyond our vision. The politicians ( who decide funding) can not see beyond the next election and will never fund something that the can not get re-election votes with. Terra-forming will be multigenerational.

If the aliens visit us, there technology will be way beyond ours!  :O We will just have to hope they are peaceful.

Do me a favor and make sure my build on the north slope of Mount Olympus doesn't get griefed. Thanks!  :D

Even though you missed it, you can watch it again...

I was at the turn basin and it was only visible for about the first 15 seconds after liftoff.
