Hey all, I finished the Pokedex in my X version a while ago. I'd be happy to help any of y'all seeking to accomplish a similar feat.

Additionally, I'm always down for 6v6 OU singles, or even 6v6 singles w/o legendaries (if you're feeling keen to eat some M-Kang PuPs haha).

Market Place / Skyside Market Plaza!
« on: 31 Mar 2014, 01:27:15 »
Hello all, this will be the official post for the Skyside Market Plaza! Contained here is a map of the plaza and store locations, as well as frequently updated lists of the items sold by each shop there. Prices aren't listed here because they may change too often for updating to be possible, so check the shops themselves to be sure!

To visit the shops, type /t spawn Skyside and then run directly north up the staircase.

Anyhow, the shop district is set up like this - this is a current map of the shops in the Plaza:

Noobstown General / Re: is the server down?

This server downtime makes me realize how horribly addicted to this game and this server I really am.
You know, I was going to make some kind of comment, but this pretty much sums up my sentiments perfectly.

Hey fellow Noobs,

I'm proud to announce that Skyside (/t spawn skyside) is recruiting new members to be part of the Skyside North Plaza. This is the first "window" in which we're opening admissions to the public. We plan to expand the town in phases, so after our North Plaza phase completes, we won't be adding new residents to the town for a period of time.

This is the kind of stuff we build.

What we're doing here is something very unique as far as towns go. We're not just admitting you, setting you up with a plot, and letting you be. That's not the Skyside way. We're a town with a huge emphasis on community - friendships with each other, cooperation to build huge things - and generally we're all about people who have a can-do spirit and like to have fun.

If you're looking to join a town with those qualities, keep reading - otherwise, feel free to check out some of the other towns on the server!

The North Plaza project is something that gives you the chance to be part of a community from the get-go. We will be recruiting up to 10 players, and all of you will be formally added to the town at the same time. Together, you will all build the Skyside North Plaza - a 5 plot by 5 plot square that will be the location of your future homes. You will be responsible for gathering the resources, planning all aspects of the design, and working out what you want to do for the plaza centerpiece as a team.

The North Plaza project will proceed with these steps:

1) Recruitment and Selection of the North Plaza Class
2) Building the Plaza framework as a team
3) Building the Plaza centerpiece as a team
4) Allocating House Plots among everyone in the Plaza Class
5) Building your houses, and becoming full residents of Skyside in the process!

Joining Skyside is for people who want to go all in, and have a really deep and rewarding experience with Noobscraft. If you're interested in being part of this select group, post a reply to this thread answering these following questions. Qualified applicants will be admitted first-come, first-serve in the order they replied to this thread!

Quote
What is your favorite thing about Minecraft?
Why do you want to be a part of Skyside?
What sort of team experience do you have in life or in video games?
Give us an example of your building skills (a screenshot uploaded to imgur.com would suffice!).
If you are admitted, do you promise to give your best effort in making our town and our community an awesome place to live and visit?

« on: 7 Mar 2014, 01:01:20 »
I'm not seeing it either if it is being updated, so I get the vibe that there's no scheduled task for updating it.

It's probably a fairly processor-intensive thing, so maybe doing it once a week would be okay? I know the town world map has updated less often than the wilderness world map, but the exact timescale I'm unsure of.

I'd definitely like to see the town world map updated more frequently though, it's always rewarding seeing your hard work come to life. ;)

Towns & Nations / Skyside
« on: 22 Feb 2014, 21:28:03 »
Not a whole lot has been said about the third town founded in v6, so it's the aim of this post to fill you guys in a little bit about who we are and what we do. Skyside is a town where the focus is on a strong sense of community, wide open spaces, luxurious living, and massive build projects. The things we have built and will continue to build will shock and awe all who come to visit, but unfortunately now is not the time for visitors or new residents.

Our core team of staff is presently making Skyside awesome, and it'll take time before we have anything interesting to offer the general public or any potential residents. But if you're interested in living in a town like ours, keep us in mind - we'll be opening the doors in due time, and we expect a long line of worthy applicants.

Some people have been given private tours of town thus far, so I'd like to take this time to offer some completely made-up testimonials from those who have seen our new digs:

I liked Seaside. But SKYside? You're reaching for names there man. Get it together. You even built it over the sea. Why not call it Seaside 2? I'm going to call my new town Oakvale 2. Or Dark Oakvale, like Oakvale's twin in the negative universe.

I'm a wizard. My last name is Potter. And Skyside is way cooler than Hogwarts, take it from me.

Quote from: Duelcon
Debo honestly I don't have any idea why you're so adamant about hyping this tow-(interview ended)

It will be our honor to reveal our town to you in due time, but for now we remain private, off the grid. Waiting to open the floodgates. Wait with us, and you might just find yourself a new home and community. Feel free to ask questions of us in this thread, we'll respond to whatever we're able to disclose, and if we can't answer your question directly we'll happily answer it in cryptic and slightly annoying fashion.

Much <3,

The Skyside Team

I think the key reason the shop buys what it does is inflation - everything you can sell to /shop (save for Rotten Flesh) is a finite resource. Therefore, the total amount of noobz in the economy is directly related to the amount of man-hours that have gone into gathering it. Rotten Flesh doesn't cause an issue here because gathering it en masse isn't easily automated, and automating it only yields a trickle (trust me, we tried).

When you add infinite items like wood and farmables to the list of things you can sell, you create the ability to make money super quickly, and that's not the intent of /shop. The admins intend for players to be trading items among one another for money, they don't intend for everyone to harvest full inventories of wood or sugarcane and do /sellall like was the case in v5. Using /shop is supposed to be inferior to using the Auction by design.

Personally I wouldn't mind the selling prices of what exists in /shop going up a wee bit, from in the range of 100-200 to the range of 200-300, just because so much money has exited the economy by means of town creation, chunk claiming, and the like. But ultimately it's the admins' call, and they have a ton of back-end metrics that I'm sure they use to make sure things are in balance.

v6's economy is a different beast than v5's, so comparing the two isn't really fair. The server shop still has a crucial role but it's been intentionally marginalized. I can't wait for the game stats to come back though, I'm really looking forward to seeing just how much money is actually in the economy.

Server Announcements / Re: Kick starting the Economy
« on: 12 Feb 2014, 23:11:13 »
Yeah Debo but there is one problem: 16x Diamonds can be sold per day. This will greatly increase the time needed to get a town solely off of selling diamonds. That's why smart players do a mix of selling diamonds and other materials to /shop.
Didn't even read that, whooooops. Yeah, so in this case it probably won't have much of a net effect on prices. It'll bump things up a bit but odds are not that much.

Server Announcements / Re: Kick starting the Economy
« on: 12 Feb 2014, 22:35:51 »
As far as I can see, all this will do is get rid of almost all diamonds from the market and will increase even more the divide between rich and poor players.

At the moment all the noobs are trying their best to NOT spend money, in order to gather reasources to found towns, build their homes and stuff.

With fewer diamonds around, people with the most money will buy all in stock and cause the price to skyrocket even more.

To kickstart the economy you don't want to increase the price for a particular resource, because that will cause a stagnation (or worse, a thrust) for that particular market.

You want to give people the power to BUY more, not to SELL more.

To accomplish that, selling different types of junk items to the server (and not to the players) is the optimal way.

Saplings and seeds are a good example since they can be farmed, but they don't give a tremendous yeld like logs and wheat do (oak saplings are ~15-20% of the logs yeld and seeds have 33% of the wheat).

Something like 24 noobs per stack will give people something more to get money from, without taking away resources from the open market.

Nothing so substantial to cause inflation but at the same notable enough to give a hand to the people who can't grind all day or simply prefer to do other things in the game instead of mining.

Just my 2 very accurately ponderated cents.
I respectfully disagree with your assessment here; you assume that the economy operates in a vacuum when in fact a more accurate analogy would be that of a system utilizing a central bank - in this case, the server.

Money does not enter the economy but through ways the server allows. As of now, they are thus:

1) The /shop command
2) The Casino
3) Killing Mobs

Money only leaves the economy through ways the server allows as well. Since we don't yet have the full picture of towns, take everything with question marks with a grain of salt.

1) Taxes on Auctions
2) The Casino
3) Town and Nation Purchases
4) Town Chunk Claims (?)
5) Town Upkeep (?)
6) Wilderness Chunk Claims
7) Chest Shop Creation Tax (?)

It should be fairly obvious that if the flow of money into the economy exceeds the flow out, the size (amount of money) of the economy will increase, and vice versa if more money is flowing out than in. For all intents and purposes there are no restrictions on the amount that can potentially enter or exit - the server can give infinite money to the players, theoretically speaking.

The basic idea of any economy server is that labor within the game should be able to be translated into money, which functions as a "neutral" source of value that everyone can agree upon and thus use to interact in social ways. In the case of Minecraft, that's exchange of blocks and commodities - the only "pure" sources of capital. While money entering the economy via mobs and the Casino is significant, it is largely irrelevant given that the vast majority of money in the economy comes from sale of items to the global shop. As such, we'll consider the /shop and its impact as the sole focus of this analysis.

The current problem with the economy has been that town creation prices have been incredibly daunting in comparison to the money supply. When you look at the prices in the shop it makes sense - a player wanting to maximize the money he's receiving would logically focus on gathering the most efficient money generator.

Prior to introducing diamonds, unit prices were of two classes - Cobblestone and End Stone sold for 3nz each, whereas Gravel, Rotten Flesh, Netherrack, and Sand sold for 2nz each. Given the relative ease and abundance of Cobblestone and End Stone, these were hitherto the most efficient means of making money, so most savvy players went the route of gathering these en masse and selling to the shop for money.

If you think about it, gathering a stack of either of these probably takes somewhere in the range of one to two minutes - this assuming a good pickaxe of course. To get good pickaxes, one must have an efficient means of getting diamonds and getting xp for enchanting, which formed a bit of an entry barrier to even starting to make money. Finding diamonds isn't easy, and finding a spawner or building a mob grinder isn't easy either.

If we take a mid-line assessment of 90 seconds to gather a stack, we have a peak monetary efficiency of 192nz/90sec = 2.13nz per second.

Dividing the town creation price of 850000nz by 2.13 nz/sec, we get 398437.5 seconds.

That is 110.68 straight hours, or 4.61 straight DAYS, of time it would take of playing Noobscraft at maximal monetary efficiency if you wanted to start a town.

Also note that in practice, you absolutely CANNOT operate at that max efficiency constantly - it's broken up by the process of getting new picks (finding new diamonds, getting sticks, getting xp, enchanting), by going through and clicking the sell buttons when you max your inventory, and by dealing with other externalities (like accidentally digging over lava and having to reorient yourself). It gets a bit hand-wavey here, but I think it's fair to say that all of this overhead adds at least three times the amount of time to the process of making money.

So in a slightly-realistic but still highly optimistic scenario, it would take 13.83 straight days of playing Noobscraft to start a town on your own.

Naturally, that means people are going to have to work together to achieve township in a decent timeframe. There are already groups of members working together to make money, and the consolidation trend was accelerating as more people realized just how much work it would be to get a town.

Now, diamonds have been added to the shop for 1k sales. And at that price, they're far and away the most efficient way of making money.

Probability is certainly involved, but by mining intelligently it's realistic to assume that you can get a stack of diamonds with a Fortune III pick in roughly an hour. With some quick calculations we justify our assertion that they're a better way of moneymaking:
64diamond*1000nz/diamond = 64000nz
1 hour * 60 min/hr * 60 sec/min = 3600 seconds
64000nz/3600sec = 17.78nz/sec

That's an 8.3x increase in efficiency of moneymaking over the previous best method, which will proportionally decrease the amount of time it takes for people to make a town. Way, WAY more money will flow into the economy due to this change, so naturally as you said, Darkwings, inflation will occur. Prices will go up. But keep in mind that prices are two sided - the rich people will buy things, but the originators of things will be better compensated for them if they're smart about pricing them on the auction.

Smart players will win - buying out auctions that are cheaper than they should be, and ignoring things that are overpriced. The auction will be rolling out statistics soon, so it'll be easier for an average joe to estimate the market price for a given commodity and price their wares appropriately given the push and pull of supply & demand.

The server admins WANT inflation because they want prices to be roughly tenfold from what they were in v5, so things like selling cobble for .5nz cease to happen and broader price differentiation can be achieved.

So as a clarification more than anything, what is the exact situation for people who owned towns in v5 and want to start towns in v6?

It's currently my understanding that we still need to accumulate the 850k noobz, but we're grandfathered into having our request to start a town "approved" per that thread long ago, right?

I would like to donate my extra veteran status to Debo37.  His town of Seaside, as well as the infamous 3 plot shop were quite memorable and impressionable in v5.
Thanks so much, Duel! If you were impressed by what we were up to in v5, I can't wait to show you what we're doing in v6.

This server is awesome, its community is awesome, and I'm humbled and honored to have been awarded this title. Thanks! :D

The concept for this town reminds me of a classic game level, Hailfire Peaks in Banjo-Tooie. The idea of a hot/cold dichotomy would be really cool; if you went full bore and did a lava vs. water or ice thing, that would make a sweet town!

IGN: Debo37

WHY?: Noobstown is thus far the strongest community I've encountered in Minecraft - it is fairly run and very well-moderated, the behavioral standards upheld are unmatched elsewhere, the administrative team is active and involved, and the dual focus on economic gameplay and good old fashioned fun makes playing here a rewarding experience in every way.

I would like to lead a town in v6 because I've made the best Minecraft friends a guy could ask for from this server, and I want to give them the most killer v6 experience possible. I would consider myself part of a rarer demographic of Minecraft player - myself and others like me prioritize high achievement and "mega building" as some of the most enjoyable parts of Minecraft. Nothing gets us going like building incredible things with restricted resources - when players are restrained by economic realities, creativity flourishes.

I want to be part of a v6 town that emphasizes architectural style, fosters town member camaraderie, and participates in a healthy dose of economic competition. I want to help others build a town that truly impresses; a town that any member would be darn proud to be a part of.

EXPERIENCE: I have a large amount of leadership experience. To take it from the top - I am presently co-owner of a Limited Liability Company (a software development firm) incorporated in the State of Colorado, hold a Vice President role (and held several other minor roles) in my college social fraternity, managed a now-defunct 1,000 member community associated with custom content in the Halo series of games (Halo 3 and Halo: Reach), ran a 50+ person clan of Pokemon breeders waaaay back in the days of the Nintendo NSider Forums, captained several ice and inline hockey teams, held executive roles in several clubs and organizations in college and high school, ran several short-lived clans in the online heydays of Mario Kart DS and Metroid Prime: Hunters, and was mayor of the town Seaside and leader of its associated nation in Noobscraft's v5. I've also led several factions in faction-based servers and always had a blast doing so.

TIME: I return for my last year of undergrad this Fall, and for the first time in my college career I won't be taking a full courseload. I will have plenty of free time to split between Noobscraft and my LLC - and I love going back and forth between playing games and coding them for inspiration. In addition, I will be able to delegate a lot of responsibility to an incredibly-capable crop of Town Assistants whom I have come to know and love throughout the past year and a half. Some of these people I know in person, and some of them I met via Noobscraft, but we all share the same passions and big dreams for what this town can and will become.

PLAN: While I don't want to spoil the unique concept behind this town (it's going to be private to members and secret until a solid amount of it is built), I do feel comfortable giving a general sense of the design's aims and what to expect from it. It's also worth mentioning that I have roughly 15 to 20 people already on board for building this town, and I expect interest to spike significantly once we reveal to the rest of the community what we've been working on.

As I've already mentioned, we dream big. This town is going to be grandiose in all ways - large plots for its members, incredibly high-quality common spaces, and a unique design that allows organic growth without losing structure. A few of us have schemed out concepts and we have a basic framework that should serve us rather well (it uses some mathematical concepts to make navigation in town easy, for example). The design itself isn't set in stone per sé, but it allows for consistent adaptability that will allow new elements of the game to be incorporated as they are added, plus it will allow significant autonomy for TAs to add new sections of town with minimal consultation of higher leadership. When you give a small army of motivated builders a huge pool of common resources and few barriers to building, greatness is bound to happen.

Large town areas like farms and markets will certainly be included, but we also plan on offering public attractions for town visitors to enjoy - mazes, parkour courses, mob-filled adventure areas, roller coasters, and puzzles are just some of the ideas on the drawing board at present. Our town won't just be fun for residents - it will become a tourist attraction as well. To my knowledge no one's really tried to make a town that was both tourist and resident-friendly before, so I hope we're allowed to give it a shot!

Agreement

I, Debo37, accept the liability of the role and all of the citizens in my town.

Towns & Nations / v6 Town Recruiting (PICTURES)
« on: 16 May 2013, 03:58:46 »
Hey all,

I know I haven't been super active on the server in the past few months, but since I'll only be working ~40 hrs/week this summer, I'm going to have plenty of time for Minecraft!

That being said, plans are in the works for a v6 town, and it's going to be 10x the awesome that Seaside is. Seaside TAs and their irl friends are automatically grandfathered in if they want to be initial town residents or investors, but we will be accepting a select few who apply in this thread.

The current list of those grandfathered into participating are as follows (people on this list, if you have any friends you want added to it, let me know):
  • Debo37
  • tmccarvel
  • TheNuffimNom
  • ChopNukeHank
  • sirkraigers
  • Dobsnick
  • itisnotyou
  • SmurfStompa
  • MasterRahl1
  • SachimoX13
  • Craftixen
  • Leopardo1
  • MeAndBob
If you are not on this list, the only way you will be able to be a part of the town for its first month or so will be if you:
  • Submit an application on this thread
  • Invest an initial capital amount into the town (several packages will be available, prices will be set once v6's economy stabilizes in the first week or so)
  • Contribute resources and time to constructing the town's initial framework
Those of us on the list will first be focused on accumulating money to create the town; simultaneously we will be building the town's spawn. We will be living communally from the spawn's chunks until we have enough money to claim enough chunks for each of our homes. This is going to be a Herculean effort, but I assure you all it will be totally worth it.

At adequate completion of the spawn area, we will invite no more than ten people who have submitted satisfactory applications to this thread to join town and invest; we will have four price points for potential investors, each corresponding to a number of plots. I can't reveal too much without spoiling the coolest aspect of our town, so just understand that investing at this phase will give you a significant degree of control in deciding the design of your estate, and definitely know that this will be the cheapest getting into our town will ever be.

The aim of the new town is to build a jaw-droppingly beautiful city that will also be incredibly efficient economically - we will have the best of the best when it comes to farming facilities, the most reliable marketplace, and a bevy of recreational buildings for people to tour and amuse themselves in. When new people join Noobscraft, I want this town to be the first town they want to visit.

To that end, only the most dedicated Noobscrafters will be sought out to join and have a hand in building the greatest empire this community has ever seen! If you want to apply, copy/paste the questionnaire below and fill it out in your response to this post. If you want to ask questions about the town, feel free as well, but understand that I'm going to be purposely vague. This new town won't open to public /t spawning until it's ready and awesome. ;)

Will v6 tokens be awarded for monetary wealth attained in v5? I think that would be a cool way to reset the economy, allowing those people who put a lot of effort into attaining wealth to potentially reach the 20k token threshold for Veteran. :)

Regardless, thanks for doing all of this to honor effort put in before the changeover - it's above and beyond what is expected of server admins, and it's the reason I've played here consistently for over a year. Stay awesome, and I'm excited to dive into v6!

Hi Ben,

When we expand our town's territorial claims we do our best to make sure that none of the territory has houses or other items owned by players, but unfortunately it's just not feasible for us to check out all of the underground cave systems as well.

That being said, we do apologize for claiming your mines and would be more than happy to pay you a good sum of noobz to make up for any income you may have lost, but we urge you to keep in mind that the mining world is the best place to do your mining, as issues like towns claiming caves don't occur there.

Feel free to /mail me in game and I'd be more than happy to work out a settlement.

Best,
