Competitions & Events / Re: 7 Years of Noobstown Celebration!
« on: 29 Jul 2018, 21:47:05 »
Thanks to everyone who took part in all of the events last night, and during the 7 weeks of 7x mcMMO XP; I hope you all enjoyed it! We've now passed 7 weeks of the 7x madness, and as such it'll finish tomorrow morning (Monday 30th).

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Chest shop Tax V2
« on: 27 Jul 2018, 21:59:31 »
I made a topic about this before but that was a while ago. You can find it here, if interested: https://www.noobscraft.com/idea/chest-shop-tax/
Anyway, if I'm right there is a 5% tax on chest shops unless it was changed. I believe that instead of the money being taxed just disappearing, that maybe some of it could be given to the town the chest shop is in. This can help towns grow as they have another source of income besides donations. Anyway thanks for reading my suggestion and enjoy your day.
There is a 5% sales tax (charged to the seller) on shop signs, yes; the seller (be that the chest owner or the person selling to a shop) will receive 5% less than the sale value displayed on the sign. I can understand your suggestion in terms of wanting to make money, however the sales tax is one of only a small limited number of ways that money is actually able to leave the overall economy; something we somewhat want to allow for.

I can understand the idea that maybe Towns could add an additional sales tax on top of the 5%, so they could maybe set a custom additional tax which would then go to the Town. What do you think about that, is that something you might want or is that not in the spirit of what you were suggesting?

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Group Chats
« on: 27 Jul 2018, 21:53:40 »
So as I recently learned, you can't create chat channels. I was wondering if it would be possible to create a new chat channel for mayors of towns? ... I think that with this channel it'll feel much less like a struggle, and instead bring us together to plan massive and really cool events. Let me know your opinion, and you don't have to be a mayor to comment down below. Thanks everyone!
...
There are parties and party chat. If you use /p in-game it'll take you into a channel to chat with your party. If you invite those you want to chat with and they accept then they too can take part using that.

We used to do have Town chat channel which was effectively a channel per Town, is this what you're suggesting? Or are you suggesting a channel which is limited to Town Mayors, so all mayors see a single new channel just for them?

Welp, I cannot connect, can you try 1.4.2-snapshot from the ci.* site?
Connecting with 1.13 crashes my client. I have a video recording of it if you want Larry.
I'm not too keen on using builds which haven't been released properly. I'm aware it's not overly stable as it is, but I'd rather be safe about potential issues. Once it's sensible to do so then I will update to hopefully make 1.13 clients connecting less buggy; plus obviously the plan is to eventually fully update and support 1.13.

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Locking threads?
« on: 27 Jul 2018, 21:41:30 »
So I've been thinking that we need some forum rules. If were bringing up topics from multiple months ago, to add on that does not make sense.
...
We used to have some explicitly set separate forum rules, but it was determined they weren't that useful since forum etiquette is pretty easy/standard, and if we had any big issues we could go and talk directly to those involved; as such they were removed several years ago now.

...
Here are rules that I've came up with or borrowed.
1. Can not post on thread if last post is 3 weeks or more. This means that the latest information is always being used, and were not bumping threads randomly.
...
As Diamondpuppy808 pointed out, if you go to make a reply to a topic over 120 days old it'll warn you asking if you really want to do so.

I don't personally see a problem with people bringing old topics back to life as long as it's a relevant reply. I'm not sure if you've noticed issues, but it's extremely rare people bring really old topics back to the front?

...
2. Only the OP can bump, and they can only bump one. This means that only the original poster can bump their thread once per thread, making it so people cant come and comment if the thread is old.
...
I'd prefer people to avoid bumping all together, but if it brings it to the front then it is potentially useful; as I can sometimes miss things where people are waiting for a reply from me. Again as above as long as it makes sense I don't mind others bringing topics up again if they're waiting for a reply.

I don't like people double posting (replying immediately after they've just posted a reply, without someone else responding in between) but there is a limit at which point you can edit previous posts, so sometimes it makes sense. I have warned many people for doing this when it makes sense to do so.

...
3. The original poster has 2 months to bump a thread, or the thread becomes locked.
...
I'm not too sure what we'd gain from doing this, if it's relevant to bring up topics again then I see no problem with it. What is gained from forcing people to make new topics about potentially the same thing again and again? If the reply is completely unrelated then we'll intervene and either split the topic up or remove the reply and potentially inform the incorrect poster.

...
4. If not following these guidelines go up to 5 points. At 5 points you get forum banned.
...
The site has a warning system which does get used as appropriate if people are clearly abusing things or not following logical etiquette. It's extremely unlikely to happen, but once you reach a certain level in that your access/ability to do certain things is restricted.

...
Sorry if this thread seems harsh, but in order to grow, we need to focus on the present, and this way, it would make the forums a lot more organized.
...
I'm open to any constructive comments or ideas. I don't however feel like we've really got issues with the site forum being overly disorganised as it is right now, do things feel disorganised to you, if so what parts, do you have any examples?

...
I was thinking about a quote limit but idk on that one. :)
The site will already limit automatic quoting to one quote deep, so unless you specifically go out of your way to do it, it won't automatically create horrible quote chains where each quote contains the previous quote etc.

THE PROBLEM IS:  i was buying more land on my island, and where i was standing turned out to be a bad place to stand.  i'm stuck in a block, i think.  it keeps kicking me for flying, but all i'm doing is trying to jump, or walk, or even just move.  i tried to turn around so i could break the block i'm trapped in, but i got kicked for flying as i tried to turn.
...
thank you, mrfloris.  i had visions of being stuck for days, but your quick response to my plea for help has restored my faith in humanity.  i know, i know, way too dramatic to be believed.  thank you anyway.  :)
Glad you were able to get out pretty quickly.

If you ever experience this again, making a topic like this is a great way to get assistance. If you try to reconnect while some staff are online, if they notice you're repeatedly connecting then disconnecting often they'll try to assist.

Competitions & Events / 7 Years of Noobstown Celebration!
« on: 22 Jul 2018, 16:09:58 »

To end the 7 Years of Noobstown celebrations and to bring to a close the 7 weeks of 7 minutes of 7x mcMMO XP, there will be a celebration event starting on Saturday the 28th of July at 9pm BST (What's that in my timezone?).

Depending on how many of you are at the event we'll be doing a range of activities including a drop party! It'll be going on hopefully for a number of hours so even if you're not able to make it at exactly the beginning be sure to check it out!

Plus the 7 minutes of 7x mcMMO will continue throughout the next week!

« on: 21 Jul 2018, 15:36:06 »
You can now connect to Noobstown using 1.13 clients. At this time we won't support any of the new features, but you'll at least be able to connect if you've upgraded; and make use of some of the client-only features.

As this isn't a complete/full update to 1.13 there are likely to be some noticeable visual issues on your client if you're using 1.13. It is therefore still recommended to use 1.12.2 if you wish to play on Noobstown properly. Further announcements will be made once we fully upgrade to 1.13!

If you notice any bugs which are more than simply visual please immediately report them to me.

Server Announcements / Minecraft 1.13 Information
« on: 18 Jul 2018, 19:40:06 »

Earlier today Mojang announced the release of Minecraft 1.13 (Update Aquatic); as with all Minecraft updates we will NOT be supporting 1.13 yet on Noobstown. (We're still on 1.12.2!) Please DO NOT UPDATE YOUR MINECRAFT CLIENT or select specifically to continue playing in 1.12.2 if you want to continue playing on Noobstown. We will eventually be working to fully support 1.13 but this isn't likely to be happen immediately so if you want to continue playing on Noobstown for now don't update until we announce it's recommended to do so.

If you've automatically updated to 1.13 and still want to play on Noobstown.com you'll need to use a 1.12.2 profile. To do so in the Minecraft Launcher select "Launch Options" and then click "Add New". From there against "Version" is a big selection list of all the different versions; to play on Noobstown it's recommended you use "1.12.2".

From there then back on the main screen of the Launcher select the up arrow to the right of the big play button, and select the new profile you just made.

UPDATE: You can now connect to Noobstown using 1.13 clients. At this time we won't support any of the new features, but you'll at least be able to connect if you've upgraded; and make use of some of the client-only features.

This isn't a full update to 1.13 so there are likely to be some visual issues with things if you're using 1.13; it is therefore still recommended to use 1.12.2 if you wish to play on Noobstown properly. Further announcements will be made once we fully upgrade to 1.13!

Competitions & Events / Double mcMMO XP!
« on: 12 Jul 2018, 21:22:32 »

A small post just to let you all know that from now and throughout this weekend on Noobstown it will be 2x mcMMO XP, plus there will still be the random 7 minutes of 7x mcMMO XP between that!

Have a great Friday and weekend!

In other news:
  • The information regarding rewards for the Top Players of the Month will be announced soon!
  • There will also soon be some information about finishing the 7 weeks of 7 minutes of 7x mcMMO XP with some extra fun, so keep an eye out for that!

Just giving others access to the top list because they play, doesn't mean that it is any fairer, it is a top list, not a participation ribbon list. The argument of 'simply because others have been around longer', no - it's a monthly top 10.

Sorry, but I disagree with this argument. Of course your staff thinks pushing players like me out of the top ten, it means they and their friends can make it (easier) to the top ten by doing less work and putting less hours in for the most gain.

Expected backlash? Of course.. Because why would I even bother playing if there's no reward for the effort, and someone who joined yesterday who just stands there leeching levels gets 100+ levels while we grind our butts off for 10? The backlash is only from that small % of players who make it to the top 10, but not from the players who love doing way less hours and way less work and get way topped for it.

Looking for some compelling arguments as to why I should bother playing when it comes to mcMMO when the reward is 'you get to play longer, and you get no fair listing for it, you get to enjoy diminishing return, and heck, once you cap it - we will probably raise it to 5000 or something at some point' ??

Okay, now it's a complaint. Not just feedback to what I read.
I realise that you're in the group of those potentially negatively impacted, having got so many levels already. The staff and myself were deciding in the best interests of the majority of players and the server as a whole, not everything is decided just to impact you. As I said in my previous reply we were never going to please both sides, it was decided that for the benefits I previously listed that we'd be better basing it off mcMMO Levels rather than XP.

Gains of mcMMO Levels are a diminishing return; I acknowledge that, which as I said in my previously reply is where you could focus on diversification of your skills, or you could use the extended perks (such as longer tree-feller, etc.) to your advantage to gain XP (and therefore levels) faster.

If you individually don't want to take part in the Top 10s (or don't want to use any of the other features we've got to offer) that's completely your choice, you can simply give away or destroy any rewards that might be provided to you, that's up to you.

If you (or anyone else) have got a suggestion to make this fairer so we don't impact either side (Levels or XP) then I'm definitely open to looking into that, but for now I feel that the Levels side is better for the majority of players.

...
Could the Mcmmo skill be top 10 xp gained instead of top 10 levels so the higher level people have a better chance of getting top 10?
...
Before the Top Players of the Month was released myself and the rest of the staff team had a discussion regarding this, and the outcome was that basing the top of each skill on Levels gained (rather than XP) was generally a fairer way overall; it gives those with lower levels a chance to actually hit the top 10 lists, rather than be swamped out simply because others have been around longer and have already passed that point. Also by the point that you're much higher in the levels you should be set up in such a way that gaining XP is actually easier than at lower levels (both because you get longer boosts, plus will have infrastructure set up such that you'll be able to gain them faster). Either way one group or another would be impacted and it was determined that allowing those with lower levels to have a chance was best; this also encourages diversification of skills levelled.

I don't however think it necessarily makes too much of a difference overall though (unless you've obviously capped out :P), if someone puts the effort into it. If I look at those who would have been top in June for Power Levels Gained it would have been: mrfloris, Entangled, Xylira, Tomb_Vine, PhantaFox, Capitilism, WearierBowl04, doc_engie, sonofbones3i, cruisinkiy; the majority of these are long-term players who have already gained huge numbers in their Power Level and yet they were still the top level earners last month.

As a team we'd predicted that there might be some backlash about this, but either way we were going to have one side less happy, so I feel like we've selected the fairer, more generally fun solution overall. We could have simply not included either in the contest just because it might not have been averaged for all, but then we'd miss out on the potential fun contest between players using mcMMO.

...
could top money made from /shop changed to to top money made in general so VIPs don't have the advantage?
I agree this is a little unfair, it's not particularly something I'd considered; but now you've pointed it out I don't particularly like it. I'm not keen on the idea that you could have previously paid and yet have a massive advantage here, that doesn't seem very fair; I don't want it to be a clear pay-to-win. I understand that it's a perk in that you gain more money, but I don't think that should impact the competition, it should be a level challenge for everyone (paying or not). I'll look into potentially levelling it out so it takes the base price only (even for VIP+'s), or to make it based on the sales numbers themselves.

There appears to be quite a bit of confusion about this, maybe something needs to be done to make it clearer what's going on. I'd be open to suggestions about that.

For clarity though because it is a little confusing:
  • In the Town world blocks which can contain things (known as units in the Wilderness) should all be protected under LWC (/cprivate, etc.).
  • Anvils (Minecraft ones) are protected under the "building" setting because they can be broken if used to the point of being too damaged. So for someone to be able to use an anvil they'd need "building" permissions. They do not use LWC protection at all.
  • Brewing stands are in a bit of an odd situation. As they can hold items; they are also protected by LWC by default (/cprivate, etc.), but also require the to have "building" permissions on the land too. So for someone to use a brewing stand they must have both "building" permissions, and also be able to access it based on LWC locks.

Just to clear up a few other things, based on some of the other replies. We're using a custom town system here on Noobstown, so:
  • Build and destroy permissions are the same thing. If someone can "build" they can both place and break.
  • There is no such thing as "itemuse".
  • As mrfloris indicated, be aware if you're wanting to change permissions on a plot level basis you should use the /plot ... commands. Town (/town ...) commands will adjust all plots which haven't be individually configured.
There is a guide listing all of the commands available at https://www.noobscraft.com/guides/town-command-guide/, plus you can see the overview of changes from before we released Noobstowny (our custom town system) at https://www.noobscraft.com/noobstowny/, it might explain things further.

question:  i am listed at # 20 with 157 lvls gained for almost everything i looked at, and i find 157 lvls gained for each skill hard to believe.  very hard.  it looks like these are not real statistics, but something guessed at? made up?   can you explain a little better how you arrived at these numbers, please?
...
The Power Levels gained list is determined by adding together all of your mcMMO Levels gained in all of the other main skills. So for example if you gained 10 levels in mining, 5 in excavation and 2 in unarmed, your total power levels gained would be 17.

As part of these contests the list resets at the start of each month, so the 157 you've gained will have been since the 1st of July.

Anyone can answer this, but to become a chat mod do you have to be on or us team speak?
As mrfloris said; you don't have to use TeamSpeak no. The "Chat" part of their title refers to the fact that their role mainly entails moderation of chat as well as general support.

Any staff member is however also a staff member on TeamSpeak too though if they want, so the option would be there.

« on: 3 Jul 2018, 21:55:22 »
As you're hopefully aware Noobstown advertises itself as being family friendly and suitable for a range of ages; part of this means we have a role to play in trying to ensure that Noobstown is seen as a safe place for people to play, including maintaining our rules.

The selected Noobstown staff team have access to a number of tools that allow them to monitor a number of areas of the game and other Noobscraft services. These tools are for moderation use; to allow us to gain a greater picture of what's happening at any point in time. As is a standard practice among online service providers we log a range of information about use of our server and site, if needed selected parts of this information can be used for maintaining safety including our rules. It would be irresponsible of us to not keep a proportional record of these things in case it were required.

We have a strict rule within the staff team that information gained as part of their moderation activities should not be shared, or used elsewhere beyond their moderation role at that time. The only reason you should even notice it is for moderation purposes.

As I have for other players I'll happily go into further detail with you directly if you have any concerns about your personal privacy including detailing what information we hold and use, we have got a privacy policy available at https://www.noobscraft.com/privacy/.

At this time in the interests of safety I have no plans to change this.

Nice job! Maybe you'll be the once to convince Larry to raise the mcmmo max cap. :P
Is that something people actually want? I was under the impression people wouldn't want the cap raising further once hitting it? Anyone with comments on this; let me know!

By blocks used is that like noteblocks and jukeboxes? Or is it blocks blased?
A short description is available for all of the different categories above each listing and in-game by hovering over the icon to the left of the top 10 list. They're supposed to be a brief description of the category, but I can elaborate further if needed or it's confusing.

In terms of block uses, it's what Minecraft considers to be a block use. This is normally blocks being placed, but also includes those being used in certain crafting recipes. It's not interactions with blocks.

Server Announcements / Top Players of the Month
« on: 30 Jun 2018, 22:39:18 »

Starting from tomorrow (1st July) we're introducing a new contest every month for the top players in a range of different things on Noobstown for what they've done in the previous month. Only your actions during the month will count towards the top lists, so anything you've done previously will start again in the new contest each month! On the 1st of each month we'll reward the top players of the month in each of the following categories (with additional fun bonus categories sometimes too!):

As can be seen in the list above we're merging the Top Voters of the Month into this new system; there are now loads of different ways to win prizes! With this change, voting returns and you'll still earn yourself 2,500Nbz per vote, but the monthly top prizes are changing (voting will be working properly after the auto-restart tomorrow morning)!

What you'll be able to earn as a reward will be announced early July!

You can view your current positions and all of the Top 10 players in all of the categories at: https://www.noobscraft.com/top/ and using /top in-game! With it beginning properly tomorrow (1st July). (The stats update roughly hourly.)

The first month of winners for July will be announced on the 1st of August!

I hope you enjoy the range of new monthly contests! If you've got any questions or feedback just reply to this topic.

Competitions & Events / 7 Weeks, 7 minutes x 7x mcMMO
« on: 10 Jun 2018, 17:54:38 »

On the 18th of March earlier this year Noobstown became 7 years old! Unfortunately at the time we didn't have a big celebration like normal, so to celebrate this year; for the next seven weeks we'll be doing random seven minute bursts of 7x mcMMO XP! Plus a few other things which will be announced closer to them happening :).

That's 7 minutes of 7x mcMMO XP hundreds of times over the next 7 weeks (until nearly the end of July)! They'll happen at random intervals, at the end of each 7 minute block of 7x mcMMO XP it'll then announce when the next one will begin! If you press tab to view the player list it'll also show you a countdown!

Keep an eye out for further announcements of other fun relating to 7 years of Noobstown! Happy belated Birthday Noobstown!

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Chest shops?
« on: 6 Jun 2018, 17:35:23 »
So I brought this up on the server and people seemed to think it was a good idea so I wanted to ask here. Would you like it to be possible to make a chest shop, but instead of going into your account it goes into the town account? This would be beneficial when selling for your town.
This seems like a great idea, I can definitely see the benefits of it! It'd have to be careful to only allow those with appropriate permission to create them; but seems like a great idea and is definitely possible.

I've created a work item to do this available at: https://www.noobscraft.com/work/full/town-chest-shops/.

...
I wouldn't permit allowing "s $" on the sign in that case, I wouldn't want a competitor town from a different nation to mass sell to my town shops to try and bankrupt it. On some servers having 0 in the town bank results in the town being dissolved and I do not know if this is the case on noobstown as well.
I completely agree with no selling. It would make sense if you couldn't do the town can't loose money.
I see no problem with allowing those who have permission to withdraw from the Town's balance from also being able to make shops that allow selling to them. It'd then the their responsibility to ensure they restrict the selling accordingly.

Currently there is no immediate issue with having a Town balance of 0, however if I were to see this for a prolonged period I might question it. This might change in the future also, so please don't take the risk.

273
If you don't mind me asking...   why is it down?
We're currently having problems with the PlanetMinecraft account associated with the server. PlanetMinecraft are aware of the problem and hopefully we'll have a resolution soon.
