Hey all,

I just wanted to inform you that everything is going well, we are making great progress on putting everything together. We do however have some slight delays! our original intentions were to release on the current machine but the power and storage is not enough for our systems coming in v6, which has resulted in the purchasing of a faster and large machine. This will take a week to prepare and build (Pictures will be posted) and once up and running we can start steam-training towards the release. :)

The new machine will be located in Chicago, and will be behind a strong Anti-DDOS protection. Offering the best stability and up time for our players. The American player base will enjoy the improvement to their connection but our connection is still very strong and will not effect people world-wide too much.

Also as this being September the Admin team have/will be soon going back to studies, which will take a lot of time away from pushing the release. As always though, we are doing our very best and preparing the best version of Noobstown yet!

Soon as the new machine is up and running we'll post another update, thanks for your patience and understanding you are all awesome!

Great news! The Chicago host is a big plus for me :)

Same... Chicago is only about two hundred miles from me. Will this help with lag reduction for US players?

Also, keep up the good work! Sad to hear about another delay, but I am excited nonetheless!

Disappointing to have to wait further but it'll be worth it in the long run to have a better system the server is running on.

It'll also be useful for just furthering the tension of wanting to play, I'm sure everyone is already chaffing at the bit (Hehe, horse puns everyone?) to get onto the new version and start out with all their plans.

Just going to have to hunker down and wait like a vulture for the opening of the new version, everything that can be done to ensure any problems being smoothed out beforehand will just have to be accepted as necessary. ^^

Ohio here - Chicago is just about 4 hours drive for me.  To the south east side at least, then you hit traffic and it can be another two hours across town...  Thank goodness their fiber optic backbone is better than their highway system.  Maybe this will give me time to hunt down a copy of The Simpsons: Hit and Run, which is basically what GTA 5 could have been if it were based on The Simpsons, and released 10 years ago :P

That X10SLM+-F is a tough little server mobo. Just make sure they don't plug the ssd or any other drives into the SATA 3.0 ports. We may know better, but since I work in IT, I can tell you that we should never trust 100% the actions of another IT person remotely.

What kind of pipeline is this machine being hooked to? My 50d/5u here in Texas should have a wonderful time connecting to this rig in Chicago, but I am curious to their network and how much they are allocating to the server.

/me excited!

rule 1 with ISP's if you need an upgrade tell that that the service is very slow and if they won't do anything about it mention that you are thinking about switching, that'll get you an upgrade :)

Where i live the internet is rubbish its not even fibre yet so here is the best i can get will it be ok for 2 people to be online to the server and my FPS in game is very linke dto the lag from the server it show i knwo if my connection is playing up before i was getting 120+ and when i got laggy it would be like 20 which is unplayable to me so i hope its not like that all the time now

Believe me, i have complained to Virgin Media a few times and they have always gave my net a boost, no matter how small i noticed it, Sky should do the same as well (if your still with sky, got it from the speedtest sig, not stalking you) :)

Title: Re: Progress Update! :D

This question has probs been asked a lot.....  But why has the server moved to America...

Unfortunately the UK does not offer what we need, as in the past with Noobstown and recently with Apocalypse we've been hit severely by DDOS attacks; London unfortunately does not offer any form of in-house protection. Chicago offer cheaper bandwidth and in-house DDOS protection which is much cheaper than going to another retailer.

I  myself, who also live in the Uk am not concerned about the move, the connection between the servers in Chicago and London is not noticeable. They are very fast. There is not need to be concerned :)

DDOS attacks are on the rise, especially within the Minecraft community which cause up to 24-48hours downtime between attacks. These can go-on for days, weeks or even months you have no way of telling how the person wants to treat your server. Having protection in place allows us to mitigate the attacks and keep the server running smooth 24/7, 365 days a year.

Noobstown has never been just a UK server, based in UK, yes. The server is offered world-wide but primarily an English speaking server. We at least expect people to speak English in our global chatting systems.

Why does no one ever host from Canada. xD
Some people host from Canada, however the problem is the cost of bandwidth due to Rogers and Bell having a monopoly on the market. The Canadian Government protects them from companies coming from other countries. Also the fact is Rogers and Bell own most of the lines so even if you are getting bandwidth from NLayer you still have to pay Rogers and Bell some money. Its stupid, once was quoted $40 per Mbp in Toronto... Best thing to do is go over the boarder to the US so Seattle, Chicago, New York/Buffalo or Washington DC/Ashburn where it is much cheaper and if you have problems with DMCA then go to Europe.

The packet loss to Chicago, IL on speedtest seems to be terrible, over 15%

Compare that to London;

I can't say I am too excited about this, lol. Oh well.

Wow. I hate American internet after seeing that. Still better than most countries, but there is a residential internet war going on here stifling progress. Google fiber, for example, would blow these speeds out of the water, and is being installed not even 75 miles from my house. Those speeds are on a coaxial line or fiber? From what I understand, the max bandwidth support of a cat 6 coax is only 120mbps, so if you are rocking coax, thats the best expectation you should have, mrfloris.

Seems to be almost identical :/

They're not identical at all, look at the ping. 40 is ok, 100+ much less so.

Don't pay too much attention to the Up/Down speed unless they go really low (especially the download).

For gaming you'd usually want to stay under 50, the lower the better.

If you find yourself over 80-100 constantly you'll perceive some lag and if you plan to do PVP or PVE in any form you'll probably be annoyed.

Around 200-250 I start to think if it's worth it and don't bother playing at all in some cases.

They are more usa players than UK players I presume.

I've been back for several days, yeah.

So yeah, there would be the reason. Actually didn't know Foob had posted a reason, I was searching through for someone else who I thought had posted a reason when I found this post.

European Standard Docsis 3.256 Protocol of communication, and the rest has to do with frequency and such. Its about the latest communication protocol out right now. It means mrfloris' internet provider is serious about their service.

With all the IT people in this thread, can anyone convince my cable company to upgrade our infrastructure?  Please?  Our latency isn't bad, but the speeds most of you are getting make it seem like we're a decade behind in technology here...

You could only convince the company to upgrade if you could convince them that the cost of the upgrades will generate sales profit that outweighs the cost within the next few quarters. Long term investments and keeping customers around to keep getting money out of them doesn't equate into the average company's thoughts, they just care about the next few quarters, and most likely they wouldn't make the money back that quickly.

I'm afraid that's the unfortunate truth, but I still get my hopes up every time the rumors of a possible fiber optic service resurface.

As said, if they don't want to invest money, no one will convince them.

Usually companies aim at business zones or generally high density ones.
Other than that where there's little competition between companies don't expect any improvement, at all.

I've been hearing rumors of cable for 2 decades here. Fiber came last year. It's still just fiber-to-the-node and my WiFi-to-fiber, even with slower nominal speed, is still better and cheaper :|
(and I also get VoIP for cheap as a bonus)
