They're not identical at all, look at the ping. 40 is ok, 100+ much less so.

Don't pay too much attention to the Up/Down speed unless they go really low (especially the download).

For gaming you'd usually want to stay under 50, the lower the better.

If you find yourself over 80-100 constantly you'll perceive some lag and if you plan to do PVP or PVE in any form you'll probably be annoyed.

Around 200-250 I start to think if it's worth it and don't bother playing at all in some cases.

Great news! The Chicago host is a big plus for me :)

Same... Chicago is only about two hundred miles from me. Will this help with lag reduction for US players?

Also, keep up the good work! Sad to hear about another delay, but I am excited nonetheless!

...Just 3950.5 miles away from me! Hooray :D

Twisted is back? If so i have missed a lot.

They are more usa players than UK players I presume.

I've been back for several days, yeah.

Unfortunately the UK does not offer what we need, as in the past with Noobstown and recently with Apocalypse we've been hit severely by DDOS attacks; London unfortunately does not offer any form of in-house protection. Chicago offer cheaper bandwidth and in-house DDOS protection which is much cheaper than going to another retailer.

I  myself, who also live in the Uk am not concerned about the move, the connection between the servers in Chicago and London is not noticeable. They are very fast. There is not need to be concerned :)

DDOS attacks are on the rise, especially within the Minecraft community which cause up to 24-48hours downtime between attacks. These can go-on for days, weeks or even months you have no way of telling how the person wants to treat your server. Having protection in place allows us to mitigate the attacks and keep the server running smooth 24/7, 365 days a year.

So yeah, there would be the reason. Actually didn't know Foob had posted a reason, I was searching through for someone else who I thought had posted a reason when I found this post.

European Standard Docsis 3.256 Protocol of communication, and the rest has to do with frequency and such. Its about the latest communication protocol out right now. It means mrfloris' internet provider is serious about their service.

With all the IT people in this thread, can anyone convince my cable company to upgrade our infrastructure?  Please?  Our latency isn't bad, but the speeds most of you are getting make it seem like we're a decade behind in technology here...

You could only convince the company to upgrade if you could convince them that the cost of the upgrades will generate sales profit that outweighs the cost within the next few quarters. Long term investments and keeping customers around to keep getting money out of them doesn't equate into the average company's thoughts, they just care about the next few quarters, and most likely they wouldn't make the money back that quickly.

I'm afraid that's the unfortunate truth, but I still get my hopes up every time the rumors of a possible fiber optic service resurface.

As said, if they don't want to invest money, no one will convince them.

Usually companies aim at business zones or generally high density ones.
Other than that where there's little competition between companies don't expect any improvement, at all.

I've been hearing rumors of cable for 2 decades here. Fiber came last year. It's still just fiber-to-the-node and my WiFi-to-fiber, even with slower nominal speed, is still better and cheaper :|
(and I also get VoIP for cheap as a bonus)
