He didn't demand, he said "please help me out here". Demanding would be similar to saying "give me a donation".

Maybe he didn't demand for the money but Miner has a good point. Surely you get more satisfaction off getting the money yourself? It makes you feel proud of yourself for earning to money yourself.

We weren't speaking about how it feels to gain it yourself, we were speaking about demanding, but you're right, it is better gaining it yourself.

Another thing one could do is collect together some people who will be your TAs and you all work together to get the money. It's almost the same as getting the money all yourself, but you'll have your TAs all picked out and you'll have bonded over working together and you'll trust them more.
