The Silk touch
« on: 24 Jan 2013, 15:29:58 »
So after about two weeks playing now (I think) I have finally figured good was to make money from mass excavation leveling and selling chiseled sandstone and dirt to making a farm in my homes basement.  I used this money to buy some emeralds and have the villagers enchant my diamond pick with Silk touch I.

My questions are as follows....
1) I know i cannot combine fortune via a anvil, but if I try to add another enchant like unbreaking is there any risk at all of losing silk?
2) now that I have silk touch I went back to a mob spawner in the mining world and used it, did not get the spawner.  Is this because its the mining world or is spawners a % chance?
3) What in your personal experience is best to use the silk touch on to keep making $$$$?

Thanks for any feedback guys!

1.  I don't believe it's possible to lose your silk enchantment if you use an anvil.  regardless, when you put your items in the anvil, you can move your mouse pointer over the anvil output and it will show you what enchantment you'll get.

2.  Both naturally occurring and placed spawners cannot be moved, even when using a silk touch.  This applies everywhere, not only in the mining world.

3.  I only use silk touch on emeralds and diamonds.  Emeralds tend to sell for more in their ore form (at least it has been the case IMO).  If i have a fortune III pic, i'll use them on diamonds, if not, i use a silk touch to obtain the diamond ore until i have a fortune III to break them.

That's my two cents.  Hope it helps!

Wow, thanks both of you that's some amazing advice.  I didn't even realize that that smelting cobble gave xp, or to save the blocks for a fortune pick later.

If I could +rep you on this board I would

np, anytime.  :)

When I go mining i take 3 pics.  A silk touch, a fortune III, and a U3, E4 pic.  I also bring a bucket of water to douce any lava that's in my way.  The U3, E4 is used for the bulk of mining.  E5 pics are too fast for me and i tend to break diamonds and emeralds by mistake, plus they cost more xp to repair and are harder to obtain via enchant.  I only use the silk touch for emeralds (sometimes lapis, coal, and redstone for decoration use).  I only use the fortune III for diamonds and sometimes gold ore.  I try and stay at level 11 which is just above most lava pools and has high concentrations of all ores, with emerald being exclusive to extreme hills regions.  I never use my pics til they break always keeping in mind that they can be repaired.  I also break all redstone, coal, and lapis I find as it's an easy source for xp.  Of course, bring a shovel for dirt and the evil :P gravel.

That's my two cents.  Hope to see you underground in the mining world someday.  Happy mining!
