Which ores?

Which ores do you prefer to go for the most? Some people go for the XP, some just like diamonds; What's your perspective?  8|

I tend to just do general mining trips. Never after anything specific most of the time. I restock whats low in my hoard piles, and if I hit a cave system with my branch mine I just go exploring, lol

That's pretty much how I do it as well. If I can't use what I'm mining, then I sell it to someone who can. Although redstone and gravel are becoming more and more difficult to get rid of... :)

I use some of my Redstone for potions, my gravel I use for roads, if I don't need the gravel, I just bury it in a hole.

So far, it seems that most people don't mind what they mine (no pun intended,) and prefer to get a variety of ores that they can use, or if not use, sell. A generall steryotype is that people often only hunt for diamonds (and with the 1.3.1 update, emeralds,) but it seems that most people would rather get a wide variety of ores.

Neat info, hope the poll and these posts will help give people ideas of how to mine more effectively/efficeintly! Be sure to leave comments on the y-coordinates to find certain ores, or perhaps even types of mining, etc. Thanks for your votes!  8|

Well I've heard from many different people that diamond is best found at y 12, this keeps you one block above most lava pools that form at that level, and in my own experience and from what others have told me it's the best layer to get diamonds at. You may have to compete with the lava, but a simple water bucket in your hotbar can keep any mishaps from going on to bother you.

On another note I just mine at level 12 in straight lines, if I have the border I'll turn and go in another direction. Anything I can take my pick to I do so, including any and all ores that I come across. With the advent of 1.3.1 I try to get at least a chest of ores a day if I can manage it, and then I'll mine the coal/etc for the instant xp and then smelt the rest for the xp that comes from that.

Redstone I'm trying to pester Foob into adding into VIP shop so that I can get rid of my redstone that way. I'm up to 9 double chests of it after all! So one can certainly say that I'm stockpiling that.

If I find that my shop's low on coal though I'll go on a mining expedition where my main focus is coal, but I'll still work on getting everything else that I need along the way. :3

My mining trips are like Easter egg hunts.  Whenever I find ore, I'm happy.

I usually mine out everything I see.
The cobble goes together with coal to form smooth stone which gives me exp and sells for 2 nbz instead of 1 for cobble. I also like to use stone for construction so it piles up when I need it to.
The dirt gets sold right away.
The gravel gets thrown into lava. I hate gravel.
Iron and Gold get stockpiled. I either sell them or use them for decoration and railroads.
Lapis and Diamond I usually mine with a silk touch pick first because theres a chance for double drop with my mining level and later using a fortune pick I maximize my profits.
Redstone also finds its way into lava because pistons are disabled.
Haven't seen any emeralds as of yet.

Ooo, thanks for the tip, notavailable666!  I didn't even think about the silk touch affecting double drops with the mining skill.  I'm still very new to this McMMO skills system.

Silk touch isnt affecting double drops. Its just that when you mine a block, any block, as long as your mining skill allows you to get double drop, you have a chance to get a double drop from the ore block, without breaking it , then place it and get another double drop by breaking it with a fortune 3 pick.

So, if you have a good mining skill, you could repeatedly use silk touch on a diamond ore for example, and then get 2 ores eventually? That is sure going to help me.  :D

I'm pretty sure it doesn't work after you've already placed it. The only thing that works after that is to fortune it, because the game does keep track of what's been placed and what's not. Otherwise you could just forever silk touch the new ore and repeat as long as you desire, which would not be good for anything. :P

I love gravel, I can't get enough of it lol, I also like dirt. If im low on everything I usually just go mining for a few days straight, I wouldn't do anything else, just mine until I have the right amount of stuff that I want. Before I finish mining I hope to at least have nearly a double chest of iron, a chest of gold, 2 double chests of coal(3 if im lucky), half a chest of diamond(this could be more depending if im using a Fortune III pick), 6 double chests of cobble and then we have the dirt and gravel, hopefully 2 double chests full of that.

Sometimes when I go out mining I will decide weather to use a normal pick or a silk touch pick, I usually use the silk touch pick every second time I go or maybe I bring them both if I feel like it. I always hope to have a fortune III pick with me as well so if I do find diamonds I know im gunna get more than what's actually there.

The cobble I get goes straight into the furnace as well as the gold and iron(might I point out that you get crazy amounts of xp when you have a very large amount of cobble, iron and gold in the furnace), the diamonds are made into blocks and when the iron and gold are done they get sold to the VIP shop, I keep the stone for construction purposes and the gravel for paths, the dirt will be kept for the flattening of lands.

I hope you liked reading a little chunk out of my life in mincraft!  :D
