A "Mature Gamer" Zone?
« on: 9 Jul 2012, 21:56:33 »
I have loved a good thing about Noobstown which is how they are able to keep the ages in their seats, by enforcing rules of keeping things Child/kid friendly, which is a great thing. But i have had an idea of having a zone where the more mature gamers can talk, one where we are granted some leeway in speaking or speaking about topics which may be considered innapropriate for children (Ages are probably from 13-8 or 6) and allow a zone where the gamers (14 or 15 and upwards) can have their little section on the forums.

i know this would be a time consuming thing to do, but there could be an easier process of getting users to apply to be allowed in that section of forums, and topics would have no references or no topics about ****ography or Sexual related content.  But it is just a suggestion :D

Well in my area, SOME people are not mature, but the majority are. However, this would be an awesome thing for the older players, but it is just a suggestion :D

14-15 or even 16 are not mature yet. There still considered kids, no matter how much you wish to be an adult your a kid and you could be mature but still.

If you truly want to have a chat to "mature" people, then make a party with Mcmmo and invite people that you find "mature". Good luck pulling that together, as the people that are actually mature likely won't care.

You can't measure maturity so I don't see how you can label yourself as being the "most" mature in your class, yes maybe you are, but there is no way to prove it. :P

Ok I have a few of points why we shouldn't add this (sorry)

  • This would take up memory for web hosting etc, or memory for the server, and it would be more work for us to add different people to certain areas, so others can't see these posts.
  • This is a family server, we don't tolerate swearing (if thats what you plan to use this "mature" area for.) I do not believe that it is mature to swear, only little children swear as they think its "Cool".
  • As EmperorMyrf correctly said, Mature people probably won't want to speak individually to everyone else.
  • Daniel is absolutely correct, you can't measure maturity by age. There could be a 8 year old who is mature, even though it is probably unlikely, however the point still stands.
  • I would say use "Skype" or Instant messaging programs and make a "group conversation" or "conference" If you wish to discuss issues that you feel are "Inappropriate" for the server.
  • Finally, I think its unfair to make a certain area for "Mature" people, we would have to make one for "Immature" people, otherwise we are excluding them, which isn't right.

What do you think about these points?

About to go into my second year of college, I have learned that some people in college are even more immature than quite a few younger teenagers I know.  Proving the  point that maturity in all reality does not have an age limit.

Besides, I would rather not deal with 'mature' topics on this server, and focus on other things.

Good day to you all!

I know I'm new, but this particular topic hits on something I've been doing myself. I've been an admin on an Ultima Online community for 10 years, specifically with a "mature players only" policy. There are two problems we are constantly coping with.

1) Immature players ALWAYS sneak in. They lie about their age, they act different until they get in, all kinds of ways they get in. Because they WANT to see all the "mature" stuff going on, they don't think it's fair to be excluded, or they want to disrupt the "mature" play because it's "fun".

2) It's a TON of work to maintain. Everyone has a slightly different idea of what it means to be "mature", be it personal definition, cultural bias, what have you. So there is always friction about someone being "immature", someone crossing someone's personal line, etc. It's exhausting.

In spite of those issues, it is certainly possible to run and maintain a "mature" community. But from my personal experience, it's an all or nothing deal. You either run the whole show that way, or you run the whole show a different way. It's easier across the board, it's less exhausting, and you have far fewer loopholes for people to exploit behavior wise.

My personal way of dealing with it, I just behave according to my definition of "mature" and go from there. You still have the occasional "immature" distraction to work through, but a lot less of them than if you publicly set up a known "mature" set up. :)

I agree with you, but it wouldn't be for swearing only, i also find swearing immature, but i do use it if i slam a finger in the door etc. It would be used for content which may be inappropriate, i.e. Gore. But it is a suggestion, and you may not need to make it locked, you could make it open for all players, but if anyone underage goes into it, it would be their fault and it would have a warning says some thing "These forums may contain content inappropriate for children." or something similar, but it is just my ideas :D

This isn't going to happen. We are a family friendly server; everything which happens on our services should be suitable for all ages, this is why we have a strict policy regarding swearing and rude language, etc.. We are a community, we won't be segregating people into groups according to how mature we perceive them to be. It is not going to happen.

The problem is with this being a family friendly server, is that parents are allowing their children to roam freely on the server and forums, trusting that there is no innapropriate subjects going on.  If they have the 'choice' to go onto inappropriate areas of the website, this would no longer be a family friendly server where parents could trust their children to go.
