Politics in Noobscraft
« on: 6 Apr 2012, 16:53:57 »
Apologies if this has been suggested before (even more apologies if it sounds like a bad idea) but I was wondering if it would be possible to include a little bit of politics into the daily lives of fellow Noobscraftians.

The way it could work is for each town there would be elections held bimonthly to elect an MP for their town (this would be a different role from Mayor) where anybody can stand for election. They could also create political campaigns on this website (under a "Politics" section) where they can voice their views and garner support.

Members from different towns who share similar views may set up their own political parties and when the elections are being held they can stand for their party rather than as an independent.

The party with the most MP's become the governing party and have control of government (a Houses of Parliament should be built to accommodate the MP's) where they can create laws and legislation.

The PM will be the leader of whichever party gained the most votes.

If anybody has any queries or other suggestions regarding this, feel free to reply.

This is a perfectly good sounding idea. I don't see any problems with it, so if you said "No" I'd like to hear why?

In Forthwind, and the Respective nation; we have had a political system for some time.  Each town in the nation had 2 Senators, as we called them, and they would convene and discuss.

Well, politics (and probably diplomacy) are nice ideas, but I think every nation (not town, a nation with different political systems would be "strange") should have the right to actually choose it`s own system of goverment.
Thie also gives the opportunity to play out the nations a little more (with assemblys, rituals, parades, ... whatever fits to the nation).

Let`s look at three examples (therefore the names of nations that do not exist on the server):
- The big empire Yggdrassil with 7 citys might choose to allow senat votings for each citycouncil. These  councils might discuss issues or ideas (and in conjunction with the mayor make according decisions) and ask the mayor to take care of these. But these councils only make decisions on the "town-level". The decisions on "nation-level" in this particular nation are made by an emperess or emperor and her/his orders are to be followed (unless you want to "leave" the nation). Of course at each emperors birthday there is a big parade to be held in his/her honour to which every town send a number of parade troops, lots of visitors. While other friendly or neutral nations send dignitaries (mayors and TAs as guest of honour for the empress) and instead of paradetroops tourists.
- The Republic of the North with lets say 3 citys allows a thing (nordic assembly, Wikilink) for each of it`s cities. Each city is led by some sort of nordic chieftain (the mayor). These mayor either choose one of their as the leader of a nation who has to consult the other leaders on nationwide decisions or they choose to pass the rule of a leader each month to the next in order,  so each of the 3 leaders will lead every 3 month, the change of rule indicated by some sort of monthly ritual (for example: the town of the current leader can place the "stone of ruling" on a pedestal at it`s spawn and the leader will pass it on to the next one each month).
- The monarchal citystate of Munako is ruled by it`s beloved King (mayor and cityleader). The Kings wish is also his loyal citizens wish and command, for he is wise and tends to his peoples needs. :D This citystate is a monarchy with one ruler and his loyal lords (TA`s) and citizens (knights, scholars, merchant, ...). As long as the King and Lords care about the peoples needs it`s actually as most servertowns today). This citystate can play out as a proud little monarchal citystate. There were succesfull citystates all over history, like medieval Venice, classical Athens and Sparta, mesoamerican Chichen Itza or the modern Singapore (which has a military and economic strength than can compete with nations like Sweden, ireland or New Zealand), therefore there is nothning to be ashamed of by "only" being a citystate (instead most citystates were always very orud about their independence and always very active in trading and interacting with other nations. And most of them even had a very well trained and equipped army (like modern Singapore that has a more modernized army than some european countries; or of course "Spaaarta!"  ;).

So yes, politics could a very nice additon on town and nationlevel and not only boost the meaning of the nation but also the interaction between cities (for example by "rituals" and event like menitoned above). it also could boost the communal spirit of some cities.

And hey, it`s a good excuse for parades and festivities. :D

You've certainly put a lot of thought into it :D

I like the idea of one nation being a Communist Dictatorship while another nation is a Capitalist Democracy etc.

I also think towns and nations should have their own flags i.e. the English flag for the town and the UK flag for the nation as well as their own armies where they can wage wars with other nations and the victors receive reparations from the defeated.

As well as the parades :P

It don`t think he meant it should actually be the english flag. I think he just was using them as an example for a town flag and a nation flag.

I don`t think wars would fit to the server, that sounds more like faction-pvp-servers and many people here don`t want that. You can built a garrison, ships and things like that for decoration, but I think a peacefull cooperation would fit the server was better.

I totally agree with you about the flag as an example, but there is a such thing called towny war. Something that this server would not benefit from, but is a part of the towny plugin. Lets just say towns can be destroyed and taken in a matter of hours, if you want to learn more, look it up on the minecraft wiki or you can always ask. ;)

In fact, it wouldn't even need to be a real flag; you could make your own one up 8)

This might not be physically possible, but I'd like to know if it is possible to duplicate the map on the Noobscraft server and create a "War Server" so if people's towns get taken/destroyed on the war server they can just go on the main one :)

Tahooper, I do not want to sound rude, but towny war is possible, it is part of the plugin, the war map might be a good idea, but it sounds like a lot of pressure on the server and admins.

yeah that might push too far for the ops but if it does somehow work i put in a application for being a op cause i'm good with servers so if the noostown map expands i'd be happy to help   ;) :)

Soldiers are best if they are allowed to parade instead of being forced to kill. ;)

Maybe it`s better to use them like in Starship troopers.
"Creeper activity! Man the walls! On the double!"
Fighting the creeperthreat, the undead and the Jayjay should keep the soldiers busy.

You could even build an outpost in the middle of nowhere,  man it with volunteers and then let fatnoob play the Masterbug, spawning tons of creepers at the walls. Like the mobarena (only with respawning players).

I'm not bothered about the server having towny wars, I was using it more as an example than an actual suggestion.

I'm more interested in the diplomatic side of things and I would like to see elections taking place etc.

Yeah, You aren't bothered with the server having towny wars, but other people wouldn't like it. With towny war you can simply go into another town your at war with and grief it. then it all gets rolled back. (I think) people would find ways to dupe diamond blocks or something. It isn't worth the time of our Admins and Mods to try and figure out. :/

I don't think votings would be "fair" because someone could just be like, oh, that guy is my friend, I'm gonna vote for him. Rather than following his political campaign and views. Candidates could (and would, I'm sure) bribe people to vote for them. Ex. "Vote for me and I will give you each a 10 diamonds!". So I personally think there should be no global "politics" in Noobscraft. If such a system is created to make sure everything is legit, I'm all for it, but such a system does not currently exist, so I must vote No.

Why would you want to bring politics into minecraft!!!?? I play this game to get away from all that rubbish, if this ever happens you can count me gone from the server man, no way.

This is a great Idea it adds a lot to the game, for I had played on a server that had a government. I ended up winning position as the Sheriff of a town where my job was to work with the sheriffs of other towns in a nation to catch criminals and thiefs.

If there was a way of replacing a Mayor, it wouldnt be fair on the mayor who brought the town with 300k and then his enemies pretending to like him, but dont, voted for someone else and walla! A big fat sadness.

Potentially it could be a good idea, however Admins and Moderators wouldn't have time to sort out any issues it creates.

Towny War is disabled on Noobstown, because of the issues it causes.

We don't have time to make a war server, as we already have 2 servers to manage, and not enough staff for either, it would also cost more money just to make another server for just wars.

Overall Conclusion; If you would like to fight in Noobstown, go to the PvP battlegrounds!
