Mature Content Channel.
« on: 30 Apr 2013, 10:38:33 »
So, I just watched someone leave the server because of the language filters, and I don't really blame them. It's a great server, great plugins, great hosting, great system, a large playerbase, etc.

The lack of freedom on language sucks though, if it weren't for how great everything else is I would leave as well. It's a little too extreme.

I'd love to see a section of the server where there is a freedom on content. It wouldn't be hard to implement, just make a "/ch ma" or something of the like where people can speak without the harsh language restrictions. I'm not talking carte blanche to start throwing racial slurs around, but as of now even talking about current events can get stifled(For example, I was told not to talk about the Boston Marathon on the day that went down), it's a bit overbearing. A channel for people who aren't easily offended and want to talk about something besides their McMMO levels would be great.

If you want to be extra careful about it you can even put a password on the channel to make sure a kid or someone with delicate sensibilities doesn't accidentally join it. I don't think it'd be too hard to implement, it would be nice for a lot of people in the playerbase and it could even save the mods the trouble of constantly having to police language and content in the main channel.

I wouldn't mind this, but it has been brought up before, and the answer that time were No, not sure if the Admin team gone change their mind this time, but they might.

You also got to remember that the server is a family server, so it really isn't suppose to be any cursing etc, but yeah, I would love to see this be implemented, but it would mean that the mods would have to moderate another chat channel.

I always like how even though the word is censored... Everyone still says "language" when a someone says a blocked word... One time I just put some astricts to test this theory and 4 people told me to watch it, only on of them being moderators.  I sometimes forget about the chat block because I don't cuss that often and boom,  right when people see the stars.  SPAM HIM FOR HAVING STARS IN A SENTENCE!

I totally agree with this post, I like talking of recent events to, not just Minecraft. I mentioned something about the North Korea threats and someone who shall not be name told me to take it in to private msg or not to talk about it, can't quite remember. Fair enough, it might not be their type of conversation, but why should I not get to talk about it with Noobstown people without having to do it outside of the server. I see chats that I'm not very interested in, does that mean I need to tell them to talk in their own channel? I doubt anything will be changed though.

You have to remember that people get on Minecraft to relax, and to forget about the struggles of everyday life. Just to have a good time with people online while building pretty things. They don't want to be reminded of everything that's going on in the world today.

Also, and I don't know how many times you can repeat this, this is a family-friendly server. Kids as young as 8 years old play this. Do you want them to read about bombings, or the threat of war? Doesn't sound like things I'd want my kids exposed to unless I choose to tell them myself.

Finally, people would use such a thing to try and lure people out, start arguments, covertly insulting people's religion or beliefs under the banner of "hey, we have freedom of content here, I can say whatever I want". I don't know how they say it there, but in my country they always say preventing is better than curing. I think that also applies here. Leaving certain topics off the server helps promote the good, friendly atmosphere stands for. An atmosphere free of drama, and suitable for all ages.

Besides, if you really want to talk about such topics, how much trouble is it to take it to /msg, or even make a party for a larger group of people? :)

If you read some of the staff replies here: http://www.noobscraft.com/suggestions-ideas/a-'mature-gamer'-zone/ you'll see that this is unlikely to be added. It goes completely against our "family friendly ethos". We will however; during the changeover to V6; be reviewing a number of our censor filters and rules to see if they should still apply in our new situation; but for now this is unlikely to occur.

Yeah, that is the topic I was talking about when I said "but it has been brought up before, and the answer that time were No" just couldn't find it, thanks Lawrence for the information :)

The simplest thing I would suggest to actually be able to do this, would be making a new chat channel, that would probably be the easiest way.

I think also with the state of bullying rising in our society today, I think as someone said, that some people turn to the internet to get away from that and while Twitter, Facebook and other social media places follow the person, (in terms of bullying) they turn to Noobscraft. If there were a mature content channel or if some of the profanity walls were taken down, this would be a opening for people to bully others in a more serious, harsher way than how it is now. I think if you want that mature content, you should go somewhere else because this is a wonderful server and I respect and appreciate the fact that there are such high cursing walls.

I come on Noobstown to get away from this, and trust me there are those stupid 7 year olds (no offence to anyone) that will join that channel, and i think it should stay family friendly.

I wouldn't want a channel where words aren't filtered, I just want a channel where you can talk about anything, non-related server/minecraft stuff, but obviously with some rules and regulations to follow.

I just think there is a time and place for everything and Noobscraft isn't the place for some of the topics people are wanting to get away with.

You say it as if it's something bad. Not all of us on this post want to get off with blue murder when we swear or criticize someone needlessly, we just want freedom of speech to a certain extent. Not all of us want to talk about potatoes being hoed or the next big build we're in the middle of working on, things like that get boring for some of us. I miss the v3 - v4 days :/.
