It`s not only about trust. You can trust someone with important tasks but still doubt that he/she is suitable as a mod.
Let`s assume you are involved in some dramas on the server (for example juvenile disputes with other players or in case you are a mayor disputes with other towns). Now combine that with the abillity to monitor other chats and messages...  and imagine you are reading things about yourself or your town in other peoples private messages... I`m not sure if everyone can handle that correctly, especially not during puberty when emotions can easily boil over (unwanted).

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Cleaning up a little
« on: 10 May 2012, 06:18:00 »
You, as a mayor, are able to clear a plot of signs with the /plot clear command.
I think it also works when the new owner of the plot uses the command to remove signs left over by the previous owner.

153
I agree with the statements that ask for a moderator from the western pacific areas, especially Australia/NewZealand because I don`t think that one of the players from Asia is actually applying for mod; but an Aussie would be fine for Asia as well as it is in the same timezones).
It`s not only about the pacific timezones but also a little bit about recognizing all the players from the pacific region to have them and their mentality somehow represented in the stafflist.

For an additional mod from Europe I would actually suggest one who is speaking Dutch (mods also have to monitor the chats after all). There already are a British mod and admins, but there seem to be a lot of Dutch people on the server.

I personally have 2 plots as my home,...

How can you life like that? 2 plot was barely enough space for the garden in my old house :P

Server Announcements / Re: Emergency situation!
« on: 9 May 2012, 09:02:49 »
Ah, I think that everyone with full chests will appreciate these emergency measures. Not being able too play for a little while is only a small inconvinience compared to having everything stolen (especially since it is not technically possible for mods to restore chests or access any chest-log, and I think nobody would want another rollback).

Fish, if you had been too rude... Well you know about MewMewCats and fishes right?

Funny thing is that Teamspeak is empty despite the bug, I would have guessed that there were more people there to hear the "All clear" as soon as possible or to hear the latest emergencygossip (like "Me parrot just told me that It`sLawrence is fixing the problem..."). Or just be entertained by some singing mods.

That sounds familiar.
If you haven`t picked up any of the items that came out of the first chest, it may be that the items that dropped should have dropped out of the second chest fell victim to a limit on itemdrops laying around (used to reduce lag).

Noobstown General / Re: War
« on: 27 Apr 2012, 21:37:15 »
Have you looked at how Towny war works?
Even if war was turned on, there are only 3 nations and a lot off cities without nations. These towns without nations cannot take part in the war-activities (they can`t be attacked either). o there would be only 11 towns participating. And the number of towns in the 3 nations would hardly provide a fair fight: 7 vs. 3 vs. 1 ? The nation was 7 towns would win a blitzkrieg within 20 minutes and the war would be over. Or if the nationleaders of the smaller nations are online when the admins activate the war-function, they would simply use the function to pay towny for neutrality.

The 3 nations simply weren`t founded to fight wars. 1 nation "Draconia" isn`t even trying to actively expand at the moment because the whole town is busy with projects like the public farms, spawners and other things.

And did you see how these wars are fought. You stand around for a certain time on a townblock to conquer it. With 7 vs 3 vs 1 town there wouldn`t even be good fights (it would be like 20 attackers from the big nation vs. 4 from the smallest) and without fights the attackers would simply stand on the townblock and grief it (that`s allowed by towny during the war, they get restored after the war is over). Where`s the fun in that?

There is also the problem that the destruction would most propably not be restricted to the townblocks. The surrounding of the towns would be mined, forests chopped down, etc. so the attackers can build forts and other things on the conquered townplots. And these surrounding won`t be restored by towny after the war.

The only results would be:
1. Biggest nation:
- The biggest nation would either win the war within minutes if they participated
- or it would break apart in case their leader doesn`t support the idea of a war (and I would be very surprised if she chooses war), while some of it`s mayors want to go to war (and therefore break away and found their own nation that would then go to war).

2. Smaller nations:
A lot of players in the smaller nations would (upon seeing that the townblocks they have put much work intoare being destroyed and rendered useless during the war):
- either ask their nation to drop the nationto be out of the pvp/warsystem (which would just result in one or two fewer nations on the server, rendering the nationsystem completely useless)
- leave the town to join one of the nationless towns (destroying the community of these functioning towns)
- or choose point 3.

3. Individual players:
Many players would simply just leave the server because:
- they have choosen this server because there is no world pvp and suddenly they have to face pvp in their towns during war.
- they despise any kind of griefing because they see it as a sign of disrespect against the builders of the griefed objects. Even if the plots are restored, it`s similar to destroying a painting or burning a book. It`s not the property itself that matters, it`s  the act of the destruction that is the disrespect agains others. And even if it`s restored the restored building would only be something like a copy, it would be spoiled. There is a reason why this (ICRC-Link) exists in the real world. some people really but weeks and a lot of soul in their projects. Destroying that is like slapping their efforts in the face.
- they have seen enough war and death in their real life and have chossen tihs game and server because there are no "kill x enemies" or "destroy z" objectives here). If they wanted that they would play other games (or on other servers) and wouldn`t need a bunch of kids and teenagers reenacting the things that are the stuff of their nightmares in real life.

So in the end:
Not a small number of players would leave the server.
Towns and nations would break apart.
The whole war was over in a few hours (due to imbalance of nations for wars and disinterest of towns to participate).
The cleanup of all the "plundering" damage around attacked towns would be a mess for the admins/mods.
There would be tons of "social fallout" because some teens would get carried away and say / do the wrong things, and we already have enough teendramas on the server.

So yeah this war would pretty much be the end of all wars for the server. ;)

If you want wars, find a way to limit it to another world (like the pvp world) or build a huge open pvpworld where teams of players can build and destroy forts, traps, etc. (and the participation is voluntarely). Or start a apocalypseworld with an highly increased mobspawn were the the player really having to fight for survival every night.

And if your town doesn`t have enough to do why don`t start a building a "Wonder of the world", some gigantic project like i.e. the underwatertown that is being built on the server atm. Projects that will take teamwork and weeks of time to complete.

Other / Re: ANZAC Day, Lest we forget.
« on: 26 Apr 2012, 08:41:37 »
As you can see here (wiki-map) the frontline against the Japanese was very close to Australia (the Malay barrier). So yes, the Aussies did fight, there are just not many movies about that and many people only think about the european theater when it comes to WW2.

As this is a very international and young (average age) server and some people have been confused about this ANZAC day in the ingame chat, I think it could be a good idea to explain the little "cultural difference" between Australia/USA and most parts of Europe, that causes this "confusion". Even cultures that seem to be close (like Europe, the USA or Australia) can have very big hidden differences shaped by history, education and even geographic location. To see these differences is called "intercultural competence", something that those of you will have to learn (meaning that there are really courses and seminars) that plan to get a job as a military officer, in the diplomatic or humanitarian sector or who wants to work abroad for a big company.

For the Europeans:
Now a day remembering the soldiers might seem standard for Aussies and Aericans, while it may seem strange (a bit militaristic) for Europeans. The reason is NOT the the Aussies would be more militaristic, the reason for this little cultural difference lies in the history. WW2 in the pacific was fought near Australia but not directly in Australia, and for America the biggest attack on the honeland was pearlHarbour (which was only a small scale attack compared to what cities like London, Hamburg or St. petersburg had to go through). Therefore there haven`t been many Austalian and American civilian casualties. On the other hand both countries send their men out to fight in foreign territories during WW2 (with a good reason) and suffered many losses among these men. Now if you had a lot of military losses and only comparably few civilian losses your memorial day would primarily remember all the tenthousands of soldiers who gave their life. And you would not have been that much influenced by the consequences these wars had for your people (consequences that shaped your culture, your grandparents/parents and therefore your whole education). For Australians and Americans "Soldiers and patriotism" are not that spoiled by the memories of 2 WorldWars and the large scale destruction it caused in Europe (something that is now slightly changing in the USA after Afghanistan and Iraq). If the Australians want to commemorate their Fallen is it correct that they commemorate their soldiers; it is NOT to be seen as a sign of militarism but as the correct choice because their Fallen have been soldiers and no civilians.

For the Aussies:
There have been millions of civilian casualties in the european theater. Every memorial day in Europe is therefore not only a day to remember the soldiers but also (primarily) all the civilian losses (of the war and of the Holocaust). That`s why a day that remembers specifically the soldiers seems a little strange for European. Especially the Germans have learned their lessons and today everything regarding the military or large scale patriotism (except soccer) is met with great scepticism there.
So don`t be disappointed if a memorial day like ANZAC Day (a military memorial day) is only met with skepticism or disinterest by most Europeans. After 2 WorldWars many countries that have been the frontline and have been utterly destroyed by tanks and bombs like the Dutch, the Belgians or the Germans have a strong reluctance when it comes to military issues (especially when it comes to WW2).
As an example: the german "Heldengedenktag" (Day of Commemoration of Heroes) that was specifically a military memorial day after WW1 was changed after WW2 to the "Volkstrauertag" (People`s mourning day) to include everyone (soldiers AND civilians) that died during wars or died due to the violence of oppresive goverments. A military memorial day is therefore something very strange if seen with the eyes of a German - whose cultural standards are of course set by the lessons to be learned out of german history and put of all the films and influence the allies used to succesfully dampen the german fighting spirit after WW2 (one of the reasons why the german participation in Afghanistan almost led to civil unrests in Germany and why wars like Vietnam or Iraq were impossible for the german goverment to directly support).

I don`t see the issue Thecheatgamer1.
Danniel just passed on an information, there`s nothing wrong with that. On the contrary, I found that very helpfull, especially since there are no other informations/announcements available. I wouldn`t call that "act as a mod".

You`re stuck at schoold, that`s a problem then.
Try to convince a schoolfriend to use the breaktime to go to a nearby pharmacy and get you something against cold (i.e. Aspirin +C). Also try to get something light to eat, if you can`t get soup try joghurt (preferably without fruits if you have an upset stomach).

168
Ask someone if he can give you an aspirin. If there are no schoolnurses, the secretaries often have one in their desk. ;)

If you are not at school right now take a long nap, your body will need the energy if you are ill.

If you really can`t take it anymore, ask your teacher if you could go home because you`re feeling ill and need some rest and tell him you will come back in the evening to hold that presentation.

And if you are feeling dizzy keep away from computerscreens, they will only make it worse ;)

169
What do you mean by feeling "ill"? Cold, stomachache, ... ?

Support / Re: People Kicked From Town Cause Of Tax?
« on: 17 Apr 2012, 12:56:15 »
Hmm, in our town all that happens is that they lose their plot (which will be held a certain time so they could reclaim it if they are active).

Did you set the taxes as "taxes"(a fixed amount per resident, no matter how many plots they have) or "plottaxes"(a fixed amount for every plot the resident owns)?

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: More community events
« on: 17 Apr 2012, 08:53:29 »
Hmm, I think that is not only a job for the adins/mods. Players could organize events too (or come up with ideas). They don`t have to be big events (they can be only for 2 hours or limited to a town if organized by that town, ...).

As an example for a typical weekend event:
Find a desert, mark a few plots (not towny plots) with torches, put up some chests full of sand and announce (2 weeks earlier maybe so people can fit it in their schedule) and host a competition about "who can build the best sandcastle in 2 hours".
(everyone is allowed to use 5 blocks of smooth sandstone in their castle to enable gates and opening that are not possible with sand alone).

Server Announcements / Re: Latest Update
« on: 14 Apr 2012, 07:02:19 »
For me personally Xp grinders spoil the fun out of the "survival" aspect. If I want to get xp I want to go out there and hunt it down, giving the game a fair chance to hunt me down instead (sneaky creepers).
Of course it takes longer and you can die easier, but it`s a survival server and it`s not at the "peacefull" difficulty.

If I had to change anything at that I would add a smaller new world with one fortress at the spawn and the rest of the world is full of mobs (no building/mining outside the Spawnfortress). There you could hunt down tons of mobs, as long as you are in a good party and know what you are doing. Something like a "heroic" mobhunt world.
Or maybe several spawns close to each other for each bigger city (with a portal to that city), allowing each city to build it`s own little fortress there. But that might not be technically possible.

Server Announcements / Re: Weekly news and updates
« on: 14 Apr 2012, 06:35:34 »
2. If you could add anything to the server what would you add and why?

A third rank in the townstaff for builders:
- No access to the administrative TA commands (taxes, plot claiming, inviting, kicking ...) and no authority over regular residents.
- With the ability to build on townplots (plots that are claimed by the town but not claimed by residents) to maintain or improve existing townstructures or build new ones i.e. public farms, parks, roads, street lights etc.
Supposed for people who have the neccesary trust of the mayor as builders but don`t want/get the authority and abilities of a TA. Only supposed to take care of the towns "infrastructure" and constructionprojects relieving/assisting the TAs/mayor in that matter.

Of course, like the TAs only assigned by the mayor; ranked under the TAs (so they heve to listen to the TAs).
And it is not mandatory that a town uses this rank (a town with 6 TAs wouldn`t need it, but a town with 2 TAs could make good use of it).
