Support / Re: Token Issues
« on: 19 Sep 2013, 18:01:53 »
Also, the Game Stats page now redirects to the V6 Preparation thread. Oooh, website changes!

Oooh, that's a recent change. So long, top 10 standings from V5  :'(  Welcome blank top 10 fields for V6!

Edit: yeah, my mcmmo tokens aren't showing anymore either, so maybe it's all transitioning over right now?

Aww Buckie, I'm sorry to hear that.  My deepest sympathy to you for the loss of your grandfather.  I think I can speak for all of us when I say we've missed having you around, and look forward to seeing more of you soon.

Holidays were always lots of fun

This may have been addressed before, but how locked in to a location are we with wilderness claims? Is it imperative that you pick a spot to stay at, or could you theoretically relocate, un-claim, and have the old location revert to its natural state?  The answer to that would dictate how serious one should be about scouting a location to start out at.

Ants are beginning to sound like a viable option for the next jungle biome mob. They could pop up in temples much like silverfish...

I started v5 with a shack and a small farm. I expect to start out in v6 much the same, but with the addition of a horse stable.

Going through screenshots, I found a few funny ones from v5 including:

The laid-back little brother of the Wither Boss

I too look forward to seeing this 9x6 boot-shaped castle.

Can we count Brain Stew and Jaded as one song?

American Idiot was okay if you treated the album like one long song instead of a hand full of singles mingling with a bunch of B-sides.

But let's face it, Lookout! > Reprise

Helicopter + guide wire, then pulled the main cable across using the guide wire, according to the commentary with one of the engineers.  The main cable weighed in at somewhere around seven pounds per foot  :O

I'm still not clear on how they pulled it, or how it was anchored, particularly given what they said about the side where he started from being it's own little island of sorts.  Would have like to seen more of the setup / teardown rigging procedure.  Maybe there's some 'behind the scenes' footage available?

Edit:  ElectricTVonline just posted this today, covering some of the challenges the laborers undertook in the setup and rigging.

Pictures / Mid-Century Modern / Residential
« on: 12 Jun 2013, 03:29:58 »
I've always been fascinated by the Mid-Century Modern era.  The buildings, the furniture, the graphic design, even the appliances and household minutiae:  Everything took on a unique style that seemed a fanciful, optimistic interpretation of what the future would bring.  The 'Atomic Age', as it is sometimes called, was an interesting period that began after the War and continued on into the 1960's.  Scandinavian and Brazilian design were quite influential in the development of the post-war contemporary style, as were the wonders of the newly-harnessed atomic energy and prospect of space travel.  Our peers from the fifties might be disappointed to know that we, 60 years later, aren't living like the Jetsons yet  :P

The post-war housing boom and healthy American economy allowed architects and developers some creativity when building new subdivisions.  On the west coast, a few interesting takes on the Modern style began to emerge, combining many unique elements that are unfortunately all but gone from today's residential construction:  Post-and-beam construction, large glass windows, open floor plans, a 'butterfly' roof or a flat or low-slope A-frame roof, simple geometric lines, and attention to well-landscaped patios and gardens.  An iconic example of the period is the 'atomic ranch' neighborhood - single story homes built on a slab foundation in tracts, most similar in appearance but no two alike.  Notable personalities from the era would include Joseph Eichler of Eichler Homes, the Alexander Construction Company, Anshen & Allen, Miles van der Rohe, William Krisel and Dan Palmer, as well as many others.  A couple areas in particular - Palm Springs California, and the Paradise Palms neighborhood in Las Vegas, Nevada, are great places to see surviving examples of the Mid-Century Modern / 'California Modern' residences.

Pictures / Post Your Favorite: Architecture!
« on: 12 Jun 2013, 02:09:50 »
Welcome!  I've started this topic to share and discuss something that we all see most every day, but that few ever stop to think about:  Architecture

Architecture?  What do you mean by that?

Well, architecture can mean several different things.  It's a word used for buildings and structures, as well as for designing buildings and structures.  It can be descriptive of the building methods used, or of the style and design of the finished product.  Additionally, it can be used to describe the work done by an architect in designing a project.

Oh, I see.  That sounds stuffy and boring, why would anybody be interested in that?

What!?!  Architectural works are frequently viewed as a cultural heritage, examples of which often outlive their creators.  The great designs of our ancestors have become their legacy, and are easily identified by people the world over.  Egyptian pyramids, Mayan cities, Greek temples, the Roman Colosseum, European castles, East Asian temples, Islamic mosques of the Middle East:  Mention any of these to anyone, anywhere, and they'll likely already have an idea of what it would look like.  I'd say that's a pretty powerful legacy.

Fair enough, but this is a Minecraft forum, for a survival server, and I don't see the relevance of all that...

I'd like to think that there's a lot of overlap; Most players like to build, some are very good at it.  For most of us, it's hard to look at an inventory full of mining world loot and picture how to stack it up into a visually pleasing finished product, but it's easy to appreciate a great build.  Who can honestly say they don't love the big spawn castle?  Or the eccentric buildings in the wizard district?  Or the giant pink tree at VIP spawn?  Or a countless number of other amazing builds scattered across the towns and wilderness of the map.  The time, effort, and talent that goes into these builds is certainly worthy of admiration, don't you agree?

Okay, now I'm confused.  Is this about classic architecture, or real world architecture, or Minecraft architecture?  Did you say TREE up there?

It's about whatever you like!  My goal is to see people share whatever it is they appreciate and enjoy.  Classic, contemporary, real life or in-game, industrial, commercial, or residential, buildings, bridges, landscape design, urban planning, exteriors, interiors, furniture & lighting.  I don't think there's a wrong answer here, and you don't need a reason why you enjoy art - you're allowed to just enjoy looking at it.  Who knows, you might come up with a great build idea for V6.  Let's see some pictures!

You know, for the retail price of either one, you could get a nice Vectrex and an assortment of games...

News / Re: Xbox One
« on: 11 Jun 2013, 16:42:23 »
There are people in leadership positions in the industry that seem to have been convinced by some advisory panel that customers want always-on connections and micro-transaction DLC and expansion packs.  After all the trouble with Simcity 5, and the issues Maxis / EA have had with prior releases, you'd expect that they would sort these things out.  There also seems to be a movement towards digital distribution over traditional physical game sales, but I walk through the store the other day and see Minecraft for the 360 on the shelf, as a physical game disc in a case.  Rather unexpected...

I'm not a good candidate for market research, myself, as I likely won't be buying an Xbox One.  I'm only now even considering the purchase of an Xbox 360, and that's contingent on seeing a price drop following the Xbox One announcement.  The only 'modern' era console I've bought has been a Wii, and the games I've bought for it have pretty well all been Wii exclusives.  I still get most of my games on a cartridge.

Be interesting to see how things go now that the Playstation 4 is expected to undercut the Xbox One price.  Maybe the PS3 would have done better had it not been priced higher than it's competition?

Edit:  I just read over the E3 news on the PS4 announcement, and noticed that Sony has made it clear that the Playstation will support used games.  Maybe physical distribution of games isn't dead yet.

I'm fond of the modern-style, post & frame ranch architecture, so naturally I like.

Great writeup.  I hope everyone takes the time to read it, in entirety, as it answers nearly all the questions people may have regarding the format changes, and should alleviate many of the concerns.  There's going to be a period of adjustment with the Chunky world, as we get used to being in the wilderness without the need to lock blocks with signs or surround rooms with furnaces and iron doors :D
