Server Announcements / Cloudsquid: EULA Information
« on: 22 Jun 2014, 18:01:27 »
Hello,

As most of you will be aware there has been a lot of talk lately about servers and the EULA. Here is a brief introduction to what has been going on for the past 4 years:

When Minecraft first released multiplayer, servers such as ours begun to spring up mostly with the goal of proving a platform for minecrafters alike to come and play together, with no intentions of turning into a business type infrastructure. For us, our servers started out as a place to play with our family and friends, we did not intend to go public. As Minecraft blew up in early 2010-2011 there was an increased demand for servers and a place to play, as this was never offered by Mojang officially. We opened our doors early 2011 and our player numbers built rapidly, our small server couldn’t handle the pressure and eventually shut off. In order to resume service, we had to upgrade and further build on our server stability. Early on, the server was funded entirely by myself (Fatnoob), and eventually as time went on became increasingly difficult to continue expanding. Luckily, a few members of our community asked if there was any way of supporting us - Thus, we introduced donating for gifts and perks, In return this helped our server grow larger and stay alive a month longer. Without donations our server would have never lived, we would not have been able to increase our capacity, created better experiences for our players and protect ourselves from deadly ddos attacks.

All of these services we provide to make Minecraft and our server community a more exciting and enjoyable place cost money. If such servers were completely free to run we wouldn't need to accept donations, as our intentions have never been to profit from our servers. As a result of the costs and growth which has naturally progressed over these years we have been able to support our sever expenses and development since 2011 thanks to our wonderful community. In 2012 the Cloudsquid network was able to open another server, built to provide a whole new level of new exciting gameplay as a result of bukkit, developers, financial backing and Minecraft as a platform. Without all of these things combined there wouldn't be such servers out there today, as these are above and beyond the typical survival version Minecraft was released on.

What do the changes mean for us?

Officially, nothing has changed. What has been going on in the server community has always been breaking the EULA, except Mojang had always turned their back to the issues. This was to their benefit, as they could clearly see how good server communities like ours were created to express love for their game and to continue providing the Minecraft community with good, clean experiences beyond their box standard game.

As the server community has developed more and more servers have been created, many die early and others are massively successful thanks to youtuber backing. The server scene stopped being an innocent platform to provide multiplayer for Minecraft and begun turning into a whole secondmarket, some servers have taken advantage of this and as a result charge ridiculous prices all with the intentions to profit, they care very little about their communities and are simply a force to make money.

Unfortunately, Mojang has been receiving a heap of help requests in regards to such large donations from these servers and thus have decided to take action. Instead of completely denying all ways for servers to generate funds, Mojang has supplied the community ‘LEGAL’ ways to fund their server, which is a step forward compared to the previous EULA. The downside for us, is that as a result of these ‘Bad Eggs’ it could possibly spark EULA Enforcement for all. If after August 1st Mojang do not decide to enforce their EULA and rather target those who are causing bad in the community, these changes may have a lot less damaging effect, but this is something we simply will watch the development of. As quoted by Notch in his latest blog: “We are not enforcing the EULA any more then before, in fact we just made it more open then it ever was in the past.” - He informs the server community that there will not be enforcement, which means the stance on the shop is no different than it was before everything kicked off, apart from their are legal securities now. These changes are clearly a warning directed at the servers that are damaging the community, not ours.

Mojang has set a date August 1st which will be the deadline to make changes according to the EULA update. All donations current, old and future until this date WILL NOT LOSE THEIR RANK OR PACKAGE THEY PAID FOR. After August first we will comply with the requested changes and make adjustments to our shop.

Will enforcement on EULA effect the servers?

Yes, massively. We heavily rely on incentive driven donations to help support our growing and expanding network, players simply do not donate for nothing in return. As quoted before by server communities “How many out of the millions using Wikipedia have donated to support them for free?” A very small percentage. The reason for lack of donations is that there is no reward incentive, people don't realise what they've lost until it's gone. We can apply this to our position, if the changes are enforced supporting and maintaining the servers is going to be difficult financially. However, like all good and bad changes over the years we are prepared to ride this wave and overcome a difficult time in the Minecraft community, it would be deeply saddening to call an end to our servers we have been running for almost 4 years now.

What we are against

Mojang has suggested offering entry fees for servers, this is something we are massively against. Placing a payment wall forced entry could quite possibly be the worst outcome for us, it is the sole reason we refuse to run heavily modded servers; nobody should have to download or pay anything to gain access to a Minecraft server, beyond the original client. Donations to us will remain purely optional and we will remain an open server until the day we close.

Advertising inside the server and paid promotions - this is another suggestion by Mojang. We will not have advertisements or sponsorships plastered all over the server, when you login to our server they are a place to hang out and play Minecraft not to be pestered by ads clogging up the chat.

Worst case

The worse case for us would be having to make cut backs on our services and development, this includes downgrading or removing voice comms, downgrading our hardware, removing or cutting back ddos protection and slowing development of new projects like our games hub. All of which cost money to keep running, with the changes to donating we simply may not be able to continue running these added bonuses and benefits.

Long term

We hope in the long term we can keep running and maintaining our servers, as we find this highly enjoyable and motivating. If the changes are enforced you can expect many of the smaller communities to die fast and larger networks having huge cutbacks which bottom line affects your game play within those servers. We hope Mojang can move forward from this and give servers more leeway as we provide the community frequent updates, entertainment and joy on their beautiful game which overall increases sales directly to their game; Minecraft.

As of writing this it is not August first, which means further changes could be made or direction based on new information, we want everyone to remain calm and continuing enjoying our services and we'll try our very best to avoid any distributions to your game time.

Thank you all for your love and support over the past 4 years,

Cloudsquid.net team,

P.S - I'm back from a week vacation, hope you are all doing well and enjoying your summer. Some fun events coming soon :)

Can we have a list of /vipshop goods?

Currently the shop is identical to /shop but the items sell for a slightly higher rate.

I donated 11 GBP for VIP 3 months + 25 GBP for 250k Nbz. How come I am just a Supporter?
P.S. I used to be a Veteran too.

Sorry, this only applies to people who spent a total of £15 or above on VIP related packages.

It says "new benefits", but the 5 free chunks you won't get if you're existing lifetime vip. Kind of misleading. Please clarify :)

They are not all highlighted as new benefits just simply what VIP+ unlocks over normal. The 100k was a new perk so it was applied to existing players.

Maybe my English is bad, but.. it's a list, referring to what VIP+ gets, which includes: unlock 5+ wild chunks ..

And above it it refers to 'VIP+ new benefits', no exceptions are mentioned. No mention that any existing benefit isn't void or any new stuff isn't appended, or however you want to word it.

I 'guess' I then recommend rewording it, because when I read that, I read:

You're lifetime VIP is now VIP+, which comes with New benefits ..

then VIP+ Players: .. and the list, including 'you unlock 5 free chunks'.

That there does not at all read to me like: Lifetime VIP 'is not converted' to VIP+ Gold, which could include certain new benefits, such as free wild chunks (only applies to NEW purchases ..

I can't even properly word it, because it simply doesn't say that or clarify it. It's very much so implied it's a new perk, regardless what the situation was.

"if you had lifetime, you're in a new group, with new perks" .. and here is a list of perks "unlock 5 chunks"

My point of view :)

5 Chunks were always a perk for Gold VIP but was labelled under normal VIP but with brackets (Gold VIP only) sorry if you are confused by this.

Server Announcements / VIP Update & Changes on Noobstown
« on: 5 Jun 2014, 20:02:05 »

Hey all,

Today we have made quite a large update to the way VIP will work on Noobstown, the changes effect players who are VIP and who have bought VIP GOLD. The changes will also effect the way new players become VIP in the future.

Normal

Players who have spent £15 on VIP up to this date via the subscription model will now be a Lifetime VIP (Normal), this means they'll have access to everything as they do now forever. (VIP Normal is now £20) your current expiry commands for your packages have been removed and you are now on the permanent group.

If you have only bought VIP once or twice and are not in the £15 spending threshold, you will continue with the remaining days you have and your VIP will eventually expire. Setting you back as supporter.

Gold

People who bought the Lifetime Gold package have now been moved into a group called VIP+ (Gold) and now have a range of new permanent benefits.

VIP+ Players:

- Receive all Mcmmo perks from the Lucky package permanently
- Receive 100,000 Nbz (This has now been sent to existing Gold VIP+)
- Access to /vipshop - Like v5 you will have an alternative /shop in which you can sell items at a higher value
- Unlock 5 free Wild Chunks
- Have a new name tag [V+]
- Have a new prefix [VIP+]

All VIP packages are now permanent and we are moving away from the subscription model, these updates and changes reflect that. Thank you. If you have any issues or problems, please contact me directly.

**All Subscribed VIP players will be removed from automatic payments**

Network issue has been addressed, you should now be able to connect. If any further issues occur please post below.

Hey all,

We are currently experiencing network issues which is effecting a good portion of the community upon connection or whilst playing on the server (running commands etc.) this is causing mass disconnections amongst other issues. I have decided to turn off the server until the issue can be addressed, we will use this post to keep you updated and in the loop as we troubleshoot the problems. Thank you for your patience!

New? / Re: Might have found a server worth staying
« on: 15 May 2014, 21:32:46 »
Normally I don't stay around survival servers often. 5 minutes in this server, however, I see it's very professional.

It's not childish mods hating on you and it's peaceful anti-grief. Even the site looks professional.

I think my stay here will be a long one.

Glad you've found us! ~ Welcome to Noobstown :)

awesome i would like to give my personal thanks for the extra wild friends im slightly upset about the increase in town prices but still nice work

yeah idk the reasoning behind the increase in the prices and it is slightly upsetting. aw well finally mine world reset! and they fixed dynamic spawning? i guess mobs may spawn in the other worlds again. until the server is back, time for singleplayer worlds! i have a world in which i am experimenting with redstone and making this overly complicated minecart railroad system. finally got the tracks to move AND self reset

We realised that many people have been able to achieve the amount of money required to make a town, which is absolutely fantastic but now feel as we have quite a large influx of towns that increasing the threshold is needed and by increasing the running costs this will also mean less hoarding of extra cash in town banks.

so more towns have been made than originally anticipated with the 850k price so now a 900k price is needed to keep the creation of town to a minimal.

just trying to figure out if thats right. because that explanation confused me a little

We don't necessary want to limit the amount of towns, we simply don't want to under-value them as they are hard to run. We feel that someone should 'earn' the right to gain access to run a town. Towns being priced the same throughout the version, despite changes to the shop and what not will simply result an overflow of towns that are not cared for, I think they should be a huge investment into your time playing on the server and something to be proud of. We love to see new applications from excited players looking to start up a town but also want to consider the impact of what a town means to the community, new and old players are always actively looking to join towns and be apart of that element of the server and we wan't the experience to be consistent throughout. Hope you understand!

IGN: TidalMewMew

WHY?: I would like a town with a solid theme, that flows in elegance and beauty. It would be a town for sights, a massive project for people to see and join in on.

EXPERIENCE: I was the co-owner of Dragonfire in v5, and mayor for a short time before the end. I have a good bit of experience with the commands and good experience with my fellow players.

TIME: I spend a ton of time on the server, hours at least each day. I have plenty of time to commit to a town.

PLAN: I plan to make a beautiful town that is mostly for show, with a theme of Greek builds and Phoenixes atop massive floating islands. Residents will need to stick with the themes with their builds. I plan to have some shops and embassy plots. The town will be kind of like a vip resort.

Agreement

I, TidalMewMew, accept the liability of the role and all of the citizens in my town.

Accepted!

Server Announcements / Noobstown Sewer Danger!
« on: 7 Apr 2014, 16:33:33 »

Eeek!

The Noobstown sewer has been overrun by hostile mobs, we need you to help us clear them out and keep the Town free from Mobs!

Introducing the new Sewer training area for Mcmmo and exp grinding in the spawn. Look around the spawn for entrances into the Sewers, make sure you are well equip as it's full of dangerous monsters and disobedient undead players!

250
This is just yet another solid hint that the dynamic system isn't redistributing mobs.
It's just preventing them to keep spawning in saturated areas.

I suspected this when talking about cows etc:
It's the same with people being able to get 40 animals while others struggling to get 10.

They stop spawning but what should be happening is having those 40 to gradually despawn as soon as someone else starts to spawn some more, especially if not a single one is dead after a while.
If there are 2 players, one with 40 and one with 0, the end result should be having both with 20 each.

If the server is able to hold X mobs at all times, do X/players and enforce that number at all times.

If a single player is able to hog all/most mobs while multiple players have problems finding even a single one the system is clearly not working as inteded.

The solution would be to have the script actually work as advertised: mantaining the mobs/players ratio the same for all loaded chunks (or otherwise specified areas of interest).

What felt to actually be missing is a dynamic (or at least better designed) despawn threshold.
A fixed threshold per player (that's what it actually looked like while testing) won't work cause it will turn the whole thing into a first come first served queue and the number of online players keeps changing.

What you are reporting supports this ^

Again, I can't have actual mathematical proof, these are just the conclusions I came to after testing things by myself and reading the experiences of other players.

The Dynamic system isn't enabled in the end. Will be putting borders up this evening and switching on the dynamic distribution of Mobs, just an oversight on our part and had left it disabled, sorry about that.
