Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Implementation of Fair Mcmmo
« on: 1 Jan 2014, 06:15:22 »
Being able to fly is not necessary for their roles, but it does help them quicken up the pace of the situation they are dealing with. Moderators are players who are helping the server for free, we don't like to see moderators spending their time walking up and down huge buildings to investigate griefs, to check an area or to deal with any situation in general. The idea is they go and do what they need to and return to what they WANT to do, in the quickest time possible. That's only fair. It's like asking why do we need a car? We can still get to the same place by walking, but it's x10 times quicker.

My forum post was not intended to be a discussion on whether mods should fly or not, but rather, as the topic is clear, implementation of fair mcmmo.  My suggestion is centered around making the mcmmo on this server fair, which in the past hasn't been.

As for competitiveness, the mcmmo has never been intended that way it is simply a 'Skill system' to quicken up your survival experience and to help out your town. The higher mcmmo you have the more useful you may be to your town members, this isn't a pvp based server and it's not a race.

Whether it was meant that way or not, mcmmo leveling/ranking is a competition with many if not most players.  This is a game afterall and competition is part of the experience.  In addition, this server encourages this competitive nature intentionally by posting mcmmo rankings for each skill.  If it was never intended to be that way, then why encouage such activity?

And if you continuously return to our forums just to mention how you are having a better experience elsewhere, then why are you wasting your time and effort. Just a thought.

Obviously, I have hit a nerve.  Very infrequently do I mention other servers in my posts (and never by name).  When I do it is mostly as a point of reference or details of my experiences.  If you believe I continuously return to your forums "just to mention other places", you are sorely mistaken.

Mcmmo was not created by us and when installed comes packaged with what the developers had intended to include, of which includes the scoreboards and ranking. Installing this back in 2011 was not to the intention of competitive game-play, but for the intention for the player to better their survival experience, whether this be killing mobs, gaining better drops from mining as you further progress through the game or to gain fun perks like 'Rolling' to avoid fall damage. These 'skills' are used as a motive to continue the survival experience and to continue develop your character, it is not for the purpose of racing to the finish line or 'beating' other players. However, we do understand that 'some' players enjoy that activity and do see the plugin as a competition but that is not the angle we develop our server from, whether you like it or not.

Besides, such features as scoreboards in the original Mcmmo back in 2011 were not present, but, each time we are required to update the plugin so that it runs on the latest Minecraft the developers like to add new features, some of which we don't have control over and some of which we do. The Scoreboard was kept because some players enjoy it, but again as I said - Not something to base your experience on.

You haven't hit a nerve, not that easily anyway. Max, I find that lately all you have been able to write threads about is the experience of the other servers you play on and how we need to be like them or what we have done wrong. We have always ran the server the way we intended to, the foundations that the server was created on was the experience of 'Towns' and 'Community'. In an ideal world, I'd love for Mcmmo to be completely fair for all users but what we have offered and advertised as exclusives to VIP players in the past, will not change in v6. As DadJaeger has pointed out, during the period of v5 non-moderators/VIP did land themselves in the leader boards, it is completely possible. If the server was heavily focused around the Mcmmo experience, to an extent of which the end goal was to raise the highest mcmmo score and become rank 1 to brag infront of the entire server we would be driven to make a fair system so each player had the same starting point in the race.

The server is not a race, it is not a competition it is a community survival based server in which we share the enjoyment of Minecraft.

As Waterworth mentioned, we do love user feedback but telling us to change things based on another server will not go down well here. We don't follow other servers, we try and stay some what unique and to our roots. We do package 'common' plugins, but again there are slight differences. Our main focus in v6 has been creating custom plugins which will act as the framework for massive aspects of our server such as the economy and wilderness living.

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Implementation of Fair Mcmmo
« on: 31 Dec 2013, 17:36:06 »
I like the idea of a fair MCMMO system, but moderators not being able to fly? That would be like a ship without a steering wheel, so im not sure about that.

Agreed here, being a former mod myself. Moderators NEED to have flying on Noobscraft for various reasons that I probably shouldn't (nor do I think I'm actually allowed to. xD) go into. The downside is yes, you gain a small unfair advantage with MCMMO skills, but I'll provide a few small tidbits here that might help.

1. Acrobatics training requires a mod to turn their flymode off completely, since Flymode disables ALL falling damage. This is kind of why I never had an extremely high Acrobatics level throughout all of V5, because I didn't discover this until much later. So mods can't just use Flymode to train that.

2. Outside of mining Quartz and Glowstone off the ceiling of the Nether, that's about the biggest advantage you get mining-wise, which, to be honest, is not that great of an advantage given the low price of those two items on the server.

3. Probably the two biggest and the only immediate advantages Mods get as a result of Flymode are easier traveling and easier building. Which, even so, is again not a big advantage.

Realistically I never saw my flymode as giving me THAT big of an advantage over standard members or VIPs. It's still a necessary power for mods to have.

As for a fair MCMMO system, yes, perhaps this is worth talking to Foob about. There's a tad bit of "pay-to-win" with VIP because of the constant 2x MCMMO benefits, a type of policy I've never approved of. Maybe someone can do some research about players who got in the Top 10 for MCMMO in V5 and WEREN'T VIP at all throughout it.

Being able to fly is NOT necessary for moderators to do their job.  This is pure fiction.  The entire moderation team over on the other server I play on are not allowed to fly for the very reason I stated.  They deal with the same issues there that are here in Noobscraft (helping people, repairing griefs, issuing bans, investigating quarrels, etc.).  For the times where they would need to fly (events, etc.), they are given temporary rights.

As far as giving an advantage in mcmmo, I personally witnessed a former moderator flying around killing mobs in V5.  This is a huge advantage.  When I asked him if he was cheating, he said he could because mod's were allowed.  Then he bragged to another player that he would increase his mcmmo and then "let" certain others "catch up".  Ugh, the arrogance of that mod.

Nevertheless, if moderators are to fly, then put them in a separate category in mcmmo ranks.

Max

Moderators are to use the flying ability only when needed, and should not be actively used to benefit their survival experience. We trust our moderators to make the right choice, hence why their fly ability is enable all of the time.

And if you continuously return to our forums just to mention how you are having a better experience elsewhere, then why are you wasting your time and effort. Just a thought.

Release Update: The issue is not Bukkit anymore, that is perfectly fine and working as intended. We are working towards updating the custom made plugins for v6 and ensuring they are functioning now on 1.7.4, on track for the release and will be updating you all as we see fit. Thanks for the support as always.

Spawn: Spawn has been touched up with all the new flowers, blocks and foliage which came with the 1.7.4 update. Hope that answers your question.

Town/Wilderness: Wilderness world and the Town world will use our dynamic updating land system which will actively replace old blocks such as old logs, leaves, flowers and grass and update them to new types to ensure our world offers only the newest and most exclusive items/blocks Minecraft has to offer in their update. All of this will be done without resetting the world. This will be continuously developed as we progress through v6 and you can expect things to be changing and altering after the release. For the initial release we have planned small changes to incorporate 1.7.4 blocks/items but the main concern is to get the version out so people can start building, then we will focus on keeping the world fresh up-to-date with the new blocks and what not.

Server Announcements / December Update
« on: 19 Dec 2013, 21:10:30 »
Hey all,

I hope you are all doing well and preparing for the big holiday season ahead! ~ This is just going to be a quick update to inform you all of the current progress with Version 6.0 and a plan of action.

As you know, we've been quite unlucky with Minecraft updates as of recent and thus has set us quite far back in terms of releasing "V6". Such quite humorous comments have been thrown around, we'd like to share a few: "V6 is like Half life 3" and "V6 won't happen in my lifetime" but I can assure you, it will and we have a plan of action! :)

On the 20th of December I and other members of the team officially break away for the holidays (Don't know if it is the same for you guys) which means we can start focusing on preparing the version based on what Bukkit has released thus far, which is moderately stable. This means, with regret, we won't have a December release . This is obviously because of Christmas being 5 days following and members of the team spending time with family (rightly so). However, we have quite a large break which will roughly last until the 20-29th of January which we plan to slot the release sometime during the 2nd-29th. Unfortunately, I cannot give a specific date but use that as a rough estimate. When we feel it is appropriate to restart the launch clock we will do so.

I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas and I apologize once again for the community not being as one for the back end of this year. As always, I cannot tell you how much we appreciate your dedication and support towards the server and your ability to keep the community as one big strong family.

We hope the new year ahead will be the most enjoyable for all of you, and we can't wait to see you on the server in 2014.

Remember! The Calendar is still on-going via the site and you can still keep picking up some tokens and other rewards during the Holiday season. Don't miss out!

Additional Information:

- Donation coupons will have a new period set after we release to give you ample amount of time to spend and use them.

- Donation coupons will be sent out as soon as possible, don't worry if you haven't received yours yet.

- Anyone who has won VIP/Had VIP before the release will have their time added and will be instantly granted access to VIP based perks on Day 1.

If I have missed out anything important in this update which concerns you, please comment below and we'll try out best to answer all of your questions/concerns.

Have a Merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year,

Noobscraft Team

I thought that maybe we could have a Terraria Server for the CloudSquid Network..

Also, you may think I'm new, but I'm from the MineApoc side. Guess that means I am new..

Had one in the past, was almost empty 80% of the time (At the games peak) and very little control as to what goes on server-side. I don't think the game is built for massively online multiplayer servers, the fact you can transfer items between single player and what not kills the survival aspect in a server. Terraria servers are nice for playing with a few friends, not strangers in my opinion. Hard to build a community on the game, sorry.

Noobstown General / Re: Noobscraft MCPE Server?
« on: 10 Dec 2013, 22:57:48 »
These days Ive been playing MCPE and watchin' alot of movies.
Has the staff considered a MCPE server?
Takes about 5 minutes to set up and you can get hosting for like 2$ a month, Would be a good place for those of us who cant survive Mine Apoc to hook up and satiate our thirst for noobstown.
Downsides: No mobs (At all)
Upsides: Towny type plugins, Economy, Accounts with passwords, Multi-world systems, Essentials, Permissions and more

Just a thought

Hey,

This is something we may consider in the future, having pocket edition myself I could totally see the fun in having a pocket edition server. Right now obviously we have higher priorities and it's not something we want to put time and resources into at this time, possibly once everything is sorted with Noobstown we'll find time in the new year.

« on: 16 Nov 2013, 18:06:33 »
Thanks for the update Joe, I have been trying to make sense of it but sorry, I can't.

Just release as planned, and wipe the whole thing when we get to the 1.7.2 release.
Yes, that would give us only a few weeks of play in V6 before its all wiped for V6.1 but hey, some play is better the NO play, at least in my book.

Your explanation about why it would not work involves upgrading the world from 1.6.4 to 1.7.2, if I understand correctly, hence my suggestion : release now, dont upgrade in the future, but wipe, use the backup file you have and start over.
Heck, you could even just restore V5 and let us have some fun with that !

Effectively the guys at bukkit now decide when we will be able to play, I thought YOU were in control, my mistake I guess.

Bukkit has always been in control of servers to an extent and will continue to do so, they provide the framework for all the plugins to run. Without bukkit, there wouldn't be Minecraft servers as you know today, would be more or less vanilla Minecraft. I understand your personal choice of what to do but that isn't going to benefit the entire community nor give a good impression, people want to join v6 and start building knowing things are going to be around a whole lot longer.

I cant imagine how much work has and is going into getting this server up and running, but I do appreciate all the hard efforts being put into it.

Just looking forward to it getting here, Ive been lurking on the site waiting for news of V6 coming.

Thanks, the team and Noobstown looks forward to seeing you around again too!

I'm quite glad you made this update. The frustration within players has definitely got outta hand and I have a feeling that no matter what you say, people won't care but I hope that this does help SOME people hold on just a little bit longer.

I stand by the admins and this server and understand that releasing it too early would be a step in the wrong direction and I've tried expressing that to other players and being unsuccessful....this is exactly what we needed, was an update. So thanks foob! :)

-gg

Thank you, the main reason why we decided to write this article was mainly due to conversation on the forum about releasing early and arguments spinning a little out of control as a result. This post hopefully makes it crystal clear why we are delaying, and the implications of releasing early.

We know you are working hard and tip of the hat to you all.  Hope you all aren't striving for perfection.

We aren't striving for perfection, we are just trying our very best as we have always with Noobstown. Thanks for the kind messages Max.

Server Announcements / November Update!
« on: 15 Nov 2013, 20:15:06 »
Hey all,

I understand that everyone had hoped to be playing v6 by now and believe me, so did the entire team. However, there are reasons why we haven't released and those reasons outweigh any need to rush or push out a release just for the sake of downtime.

Let me briefly explain the chunky system and direction we are taking v6. As you know we have been planning and preparing v6 to last much longer than previous versions, this means a lot of thought and preparation has gone into keeping the world clean and fresh for years to come. Our aims are to minimize the amount of inactive builds or "ruins" and generally just have a world full of active buildings and players, who are devoted to our server.

The vision meant we had to create a custom system, which you all know by now as "Chunky" ~ The way chunky works is that it records the entire world data as it was naturally formed (Before any players even touch it) this will mean the saved recording will be like the first time you back up a computer, completely fresh and untouched. This saved data will be continuously used throughout the entire version; as an example: Someone wishes to reset their land or an automated inactivity/ban land refresh happens, which means the data will be grabbed and the chunks will be restored to the time before players walk the very earth.

So why can't you release in 1.6.4? Well, in 1.6.4 the way data is saved and the way we wanted to save data will no longer work in 1.7.2. Meaning any data we save of the fresh world would not roll back, due to the data being unreadable and old. This is due to Minecraft itself changing the way world chunk data is saved in 1.7.2.

What would have happened if we released in 1.6.4?

Here are a list of possible outcomes of releasing on 1.6.4

  • Data is saved the old way and thus by the time 1.7.2 hits the fresh world data, which is the source of data where backups are pulled from to keep the world fresh will not work. Completely nullifying the entire plan for the version. Which would result in another world reset a year later, due to the world being a mess again!
  • The system not functioning correctly due to these changes, which would cause player block and inventory data to be rolled back or possibly lost. Losing items 1 month after the version hits... disaster!?!
  • The entire auction system will be broken when 1.7.2 hits, meaning any saved items on there or any items currently listed will be entirely lost. Due to the way 1.7.2 has changed block and item saved data
  • Towns being completely lost due to Towny not updating their 1.7.2 saving methods

I hope this gives those people asking "Release on 1.6.4" the answer they needed, it is not ideal and it is not going to benefit us in the long run.

However, we are devising a  backup plan ~ Which means we are looking into creating a super converter, the converter will change all old data to the new data. This comes with a price! ~ lots and lots of time and devotion which could be spent on ensuring a safer and more reliable release on 1.7.2. Again, this is not ideal and would only be created in the worst possible scenario in which Bukkit don't feel they can update for a long, long time.

In saying that, we are still relying on Bukkit to continue their hard work at getting 1.7.2 out and remember, the converter is merely a backup plan and is something we are not going to push too much for as we believe it will not only waste time but also mean a less stable v6 release as it could have been.

I hope you all understand and don't vent too much frustration towards us, we are trying our best to ensure v6 will be stable and reliable server for years to come. Rushing the fundamental core development and launch would forever debilitate the version, which is not something we want to happen after all of our work on the version. Since we released all those years ago we have always tried to give our players the best possible experience and service, we aren't miracle workers but we do try our very hardest. We do this because of our great community and the sense of friendship and devotion that our players give to this little thing we call 'Noobstown' so please, just hold on tight and wait that little bit longer. We are thankful for those who still support us and will be there from the day we launch the future of our server.

Keeping busy, preparing the version ~ Waiting on news from Bukkit,

Noobscraft team

Noobstown General / Re: Opening The Server In 1.6.4
« on: 14 Nov 2013, 08:44:10 »
1.7.2 may possibly break everything, meaning if you were to protect or build anything in 1.6.4 it could be potentially lost when we move to 1.7.2, this is due to the way block and item data saving is changing in 1.7.2. This would be a terrible start to the version and would just create more arguments and anger in the community, we are going to wait it out and ensure the release is smooth. We'll be posting an update article to explain this within the next day or so, so please be patient for that.

There may be possible ways we can start on 1.6.4, but that would be a last resort and not very ideal or completely reliable.  This method would mean creating conversion plugins to convert the data, which would be incredibly time consuming and a waste of time if 1.7.2 is around the corner. We'll discuss this in the article soon as I mention above.

Welcome to Town Web Inventory Access Point Applications. This application is specifically for requesting a web inventory access chest setup in your town, much like the main spawn (Noobstown). This will enable your citizens to use the web inventory without traveling back and forth to spawn.

Web Inventory Access Points require two sets of boxes (chests) Deposit and Collection.

Deposit enables players to transfer items in-game to the website and Collection enables them to collect web items in-game. Before you apply you need to ensure you have the facility for these chests in your Access Point building, please correctly define two sections of space for  both collection and deposit chests.

Towns of 10 or more citizens are eligible for an Access Point, please do-not apply until you have the required amount.

So he won a Skin Competition with a skin he didn't create himself? The skin is on Planet Minecraft and it is very popular, a lot of people use this skin... it is good indeed, but why would someone who didn't make their own skin win a Competition with such a massive price? 30 Days of VIP & 3000 Tokens for something you did not even make yourself isn't exactly fair.

Link to the skin that others have also posted here:

Admittedly, I thought this was unique... however, I still liked King's story that he put with the skin. I believe a few others in the contest had actually submitted pre-made skins or skins made by others, so It isn't a huge deal. There will be plenty more chance to win things in the future, such as VIP.

Server Announcements / Events Network early 2014
« on: 3 Nov 2013, 17:37:45 »
Hey guys,

I am happy to announce that across the entire Network we'll be creating an Event/Games environment in which you'll be able to connect to from your home server (Noobstown or Apocalypse) and play with each other in one big hub. This system will be available early 2014 and will be rolled out across both servers, allowing you to compete in mini games and events to earn tokens and rewards for the server you play on.

This games will be run on entirely new machines, so they won't be effecting the performance or stability of the main server and functions. This allows us to add lots of unique and exciting events for our community to share, and we can't wait to see you all playing as one.

How will I gain access to this 'Event Hub'?

You will walk through a portal on either Noobstown or Apocalypse and your character will begin a tracking process in which all your progress and rewards will be transferred to your home server. If you play both you will be given some form of option to select where you want the rewards to be sent to.

What can we expect?

Automated games that include our unique games that have been created by staff including The Cube, Sand pit and Snowball. We will also be working with the community to develop new exciting games for both communities, taking suggestions and advice to better build our Games network for the community.

How will this be moderated?

We are going to be bringing in both staff teams from either server, which can collectively monitor the environment within the games hub system. Interaction will only occur in games and collectively the two servers will share the same rules, we will be working closely to tighten the gap between any rule difference early and ensure that when the two meet in this world, the ruling will be completely understood from both servers.

What will the rewards be?

Most likely token based, continuing the systems we have ran in the past the will be exchangeable for perks and rewards in your survival/rpg home server.

When?

As said above we'll be looking into rolling this out early 2014 for beta testing, and slowly as more games are fully functioning make this completely accessible for everyone.

Thank you and we look forward to strengthening the two communities and creating a fun environment for the two.

They don't call me the fattest noob for nothing.

399
Hey guys,

Please try not to argue, we are better than that and over the past 3 years (almost) have grew a strong community of fun and kind players. I and other members of the staff team take full-responsibility for being late with the release, but when you are planning something which is going to last a whole lot longer than the time Noobstown has been around you want to make things right.

If we did release earlier and worked on things whilst you were playing, you wouldn't have the full experience and we'd probably have an awful lot more complaints if there were any serious issues with items/land and what not. As much as we've pushed and pushed to get this out, things have gotten in the way and 1.7.2 is no exception. We understood that it was approaching and we knew it would only be a matter of weeks before the release, but they released much sooner than anticipated. We were under the impression that Mojang would prepare something for this weekend (Minecon) since they have in the past during the convention.

Right now, we want to ensure everything is going to be ready in 1.7.2. We don't want to worry about all the implications of the new version of Minecraft ruining everything we've worked on for months. We are still yet to publicly test our new system, we don't know how they'll react and on top of that releasing before a version would effectively create more work for us, we are re-doing a lot of things that have been changed in 1.7. These include the saving of block data, if for example you had a saved chunk in 1.6.4 and the data was old, on 1.7 it could possibly not function correctly or break the system completely. We are not prepared to take those risks, after everything we've put you guys through with the changing of versions and losing items/blocks anyway - It's completely not worth the risk.

The competition is not a distraction, it is a web-side competition/event for Noobsween since nothing has been done this year due to the delays in release and what not.

In the past we've released things far too early or rushed things and it just hasn't worked to our advantage at all and those were much, much smaller changes/updates. I think our best option is to release when we are ready to, after all we know what is needed to run the server and how OUR systems function.

Again as I keep saying, I appreciate you all hanging around and staying part of this community. We are extremely thankful for the majority of your support and can't wait to see you all in v6

400
Hey all,

I hope you are all doing well and enjoying October, eating plenty of candy and dressing up for the occasion. We are again sorry that Noobween will not be shared properly in the community this year, and we will
work to ensure our next big event; Noobmas, is an extra special experience!

I just wanted to write a quick update so you don't feel out of the loop!

1.7 was a huge milestone for Mojang and a lot of their code has changed, this has resulted in delays with Bukkit because they have to catch up on all those changes. I'm sure they are working as fast and efficiently as possible, but for now we are waiting patiently for the release of a 1.7 build. Once released, we can prepare for our v6 launch (finally!).

Later today, or possibly tomorrow there will be a video released giving you a run-down of the all-new Auction system in v6. The Auction is one of the most exciting features of v6, as it gives the community a fantastic tool to create a stable trading environment. Not only this, but you can manage trading on and off the server... so, you don't even need to login to check if your items are selling!

We are excited to share the new server with you all, after months and months of development it literally feels like a life-time since things were normal here at Noobstown. Anyway, we do hope you all have a wonderful Halloween and don't try to miss us too much.
