Guides / Re: Shelters: Wilderness
« on: 31 Oct 2012, 04:38:52 »
The in-game [Tip] says you'll get protected in a town. But to break it down, no one except you and select town staffers will be able to build and destroy on your plot in town. And as you've said, the amenities are great--a lot of towns have farms and animal ranches. A third advantage would be the friends you make, who can help you or mine with you, share ideas on how to build a project you had in mind, etc (although, many people have friends who live in other towns).

One advantage of a wildy home is you won't have to deal with plot taxes. (Some towns don't impose taxes though). Another, perhaps bigger, advantage is that you have a lot more space to build on, albeit at the risk of being griefed. But without the 16x16 plot constraint, your builds become much more creative. Our trusted mods will do all they can to restore griefed wildy houses, as I've seen them do (well, heard them, on Gen Chat).

(Some personal thoughts)
If I'm building a wildy home, I'd find a jungle area and make an underground base. Being underground makes it secluded, and the dense vegetation serves as a deterrent.

Oh noes! The TA list has been reset and all the Mayors have to re-add their TAs and assign them a rank.

EDIT: Even your personal perms are re-set (like, if you disabled your friends from building/destroying on your plots)

EDIT: Please disregard and await further updates from Foob and the Admin team. Wouldn't want to spread a wrong word here

Noobstown General / Re: How did you last die in Minecraft?
« on: 26 Oct 2012, 23:09:04 »
I last died of falling, too, I think. A few days ago at San57x100's shop/tower at SwagCity. Some friends and I were seeing how far of a jump we can make from San's 60-block-high roof :)

*psst*... don't tell Tom, but I was able to make it to the enclosed private pig spawner alive! ;)

I'll have to say an Enderchest since I didn't have one before. Although Nausea, Fire, and Hunger come in close lol...

Oh! I got 5 Pumpkin Seeds once, after buying a Pumpkin and Torch. (Really... I could've gotten 4 seeds from the pumpkin lol)

Aha! I was just chatting with someone about making money in Noobstown.
stack = 64 items
(will update)

1. Sell to the server shop. Gravel sells for 64 Noobz a stack, for the times you hit a gravel patch while mining. Dirt and Cobble sell for only 32 Noobz a stack. This is usually what most new noobs do, including myself.
Logs are a good thing to mine (erm... cut) since 1 log = 4 planks and 1 plank = 2 Noobz (currently). So a stack of logs sells for 512 Noobz. (I call this "Debo's method". *shoutout*! lol)
Wheat and sugarcane sell for 1 Noob apiece. (This is how I got money during my newbie noob days). Build large farms hidden from everyone, then farm away.
Smelt cobble and sell stone for 128 Noobz a stack (another one of my newbie noob earners). Bring a few furnaces when mining---when you're full of cobble and coal, smelt away and sell!

2. Ask for jobs. Some people would have you mine stuff or clear out a shaft or lay down some dirt for some amount of money. You just have to pay attention to Gen Chat.

3. Hoard building materials like brick, wool, and glass. When you get at least a doublechestful, be on the lookout for whoever on chat wants to buy them. Some items sell more than others.

4. Enchant diamond tools/armor and sell them to people. Shoot for max enchants; look up an enchant guide (Here's Myrf's) to max out your chances. How much do silky picks sell for nowadays, 12k? 18k? Sometimes you'll have to auction it off, so wait until there's over 50 people on the server.

5. Set up chest shops. This is for advanced Noobies--- erm, players. For those who have been around for at least a week or two. Because you'll need to build up a name for yourself so people would come to your shop and buy something. Besides, it costs 100 Noobz to make a chest shop sign. Here is Foob's guide on how to properly set up a chest shop. Also check out Debo's post right below.

IMPORTANT COMMANDS:
Paying other people
/money pay <playername> <amount>

See which items are sellable/buyable on server shop
/shop list
/shop list <pagenumber> (For pages 2-7)

Selling sellable items
/sell <itemname> <amount>

Selling all of a sellable item in your inventory
/sellall <itemname>

Private-messaging someone (for doing private transactions)
/msg <playername>
(This will make you enter private chat. To leave and go back to Gen Chat, do /ch g)

Towns & Nations / Re: Trans-town Underground Waterway
« on: 23 Oct 2012, 19:14:33 »
im not sure if this has been said but i watch a youtuber called etho and he has made something like this but it only 3 wide but the same idea

this is a link with him making it. watch from 18:00
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LokPA3JwAg0#ws
Oh my goodness! This design has never been mentioned before. Thanks soooo much! It's because of the fences that the boat is able to move around. Although, glass may have an effect too, since fluids flow differently on glass. But I'm gonna check on that.

The need for the side fences will put the tunnels still at 5-wide though.

I'm poised to make a cost breakdown per segment on these three alternative designs next... Oh, the engineer in me!
:3

What good would this do except from looks? It's simple enough to /t spawn townname. Yeah, it may take like a little sum of nbz, but it also takes only 2 seconds max, having to travel long distances in water isn't fun?
This is true; it is for looks. This is why we're trying to simplify the design to make it worth it. And another reason is to just have something to do.

I was also thinking of how monotonous it would be to be on a boat over hundreds of blocks, and underground to top it all off. I was thinking of placing random easter eggs here and there throughout the ride.

Seems interesting and awesome! Also, after watching the video its not really seem complicated just will take a good while.
Well whatever happens, let me know. I'm down to help out for this project!
San, SwagCity branches right off of the Nova-MapleForge line ;) We'll hit a few towns too if we made a waterway to that direction.

This is a great idea!

And like San57 said, not so complicated either. Once you have replicated the design 2-3 times, it will stick. And we can have managers that can inspect the design as it develops, making sure it is built correctly. Two-lane system will be necessary (for both directions). And a design for crossroads, which I think will be necessary as the project become bigger.

I support this!
Craft, that's a good point :) (builders having a "learning curve"). The main issue would be if we bump into outposts or towns. In which case, we'll ask a town staffer or work around it. Umm. Seaside is kinda isolated, but it would be pretty cool to make it connected :)

EDIT: I should start making a list of important people. The rate at which this discussion is going...
Alright. Here we go--
The Nova-MapleForge Line covers Nova, BlackThorn, Oakvale, Kingdom, and Cliffside, and even Gardell if we extend it. Maxi of BT has shown interest, and hm... I know some people from Nova who I can talk to... *ahem* Meep *ahem* Then, Oakvale... (*sniff* Fish, you've been gone for too long buddy! :/ )
The branch leading to SwagCity will hit DragonFire and a little town called ThunderStorm. San, you have connections, don't you? ;)
On the other side of the map, Craft and Debo are agreeable, so we'll connect Seaside somewhere. Well, I was going by the assumption that if you said you agree, then you'd want your town to be part of the waterway. (Do correct me if this is not the case).
The other big network I see is one going form Fairfax to Empire, but we'll see if anyone from {Fairfax, Morningwood, Glasgow, Khaos, Townsville, Empire} is interested.

But, we ARE gonna to 1.4 at some point, right?  >:( *can't wait* I already have a full set of leather armor waiting to be dyed... (Actually, I thought dyeing was already possible, and when I went to the crafting table... and looked up the Minecraft wiki... I got disappointed).

I really wonder how mcMMO will work things around with an actual Anvil coming out.

Towns & Nations / Re: Trans-town Underground Waterway
« on: 19 Oct 2012, 15:55:06 »
...the design shown is a bit complicated in terms of building... we could certainly come up with an easy-to-build design for this tunnel that could be replicated and extended all across the map. If we used one-block thick still water...

Duly acknowledged :) This got me into thinking of a one-wide waterway that still uses one-way current. I think water-stopping blocks (signs, ladders, sugarcane?) are necessary. (Design still forthcoming) EDIT: What if there was a way to build a two-way waterway assembly that uses just one water block for each section? Like, make the water flow north on the left side, but flow south on the other side? I shall experiment with this...

As for showing everyone how to construct it, I could build a step-by-step demonstration area where it shows a build of each step of a design, and instructions on what to do next.

About the griefing issue... I ask myself, "Is there a best y-level to build on, that will minimize griefing?" I mean, even for those who mine in the mainworld, they'd go for 20 and below for the diamonds. Meanwhile, a higher y that's closer to the surface is also bad because we might hit wildy home basements. Would a y of 30-ish do?

It Could be greate whit that system at BlackThorn Because ther is 2-4 Towns Near my Town (BlackThorn), i would like to help you build it.

The home blocks for Blackthorn, Nova, Cliffside, Oakvale, and Kingdom are all within a 500-by-1600 block area. I haven't checked the other town clusters though.

Thanks for the input :) Looks like the next step is to come up with a more convenient design.

EDIT: Design Idea Tested

A one-wide waterway. It turns out to be unusable because the boat won't fit properly. (Please notify me if this can be disproved). I'll change the design to a two-wide one-way, with signs on either side. This will make the tunnel at least five blocks wide.

I also have an idea on how to implement turns-- for now, I'm thinking, a 5-by-5, 2-deep still-water crossroads.

That's it, for now. Oh, and Debo, on my charts, Dirt is the closest town to Seaside, and it's 1300 blocks away.

Other / Under self-imposed motivation thing
« on: 18 Oct 2012, 21:35:27 »
Heya folks. I'm imposing a motivation program on myself; I confess I spend more time playing MC than earning real money through my online job. The mechanics are simple--for each minute I spend on my online job, I get to spend twice as much on Noobstown. (My job requires me to be on for at least 15 minutes at a time). I'll probably be wood-chopping or blaze-farming or sheep-shearing when I'm on.

I'll try to be focused and mostly leave Gen Chat, so if I don't respond to your GenChat messages, do /msg ummfredfelizco or /tc or /nc as appropriate.

And if I leave abruptly, that's because my time's up and I have to earn more Noobstown time by getting on my job again :) which is kinda similar to being a responsible Noobstownian. I get to chat with young people on the Internet about their homework problems. :P

Anyways. If I keep this up for some number of days (at least one day?) I plan to reward myself with VIP privileges! So, banzai to me :D

Towns & Nations / Trans-town Underground Waterway
« on: 16 Oct 2012, 05:07:58 »
(A crazy, off-the-wall project idea)

So, about a month ago, there was the idea of constructing a train station that would connect different towns. The consensus seemed to be that it was ridiculously expensive (due to powered rails needing gold, and regular rails needing iron).

I present an idea for another mode of transportation that would cross towns: An underground/underwater waterway.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkbgzkid4b8#ws

Some pro's to this project:
  • It would create jobs for new players (clearing out underground space or patching up old mines). I've noticed a lot of new players/town residents are asking for jobs to do. Money might be an issue though.
  • A lot of ores will be mined besides the mundane stone, gravel and dirt. Whoever decides to help out will get to raise their Mining/Excav skill.
  • It will serve as a monument for good relationship between towns, and is just a neat thing to have! (Hint: have it connected to the town subway)

Drawbacks:
  • It only goes one way, so two waterway lanes are needed, bringing it up to an 11- or 13-wide tunnel instead of 5 or 6. (It will also be about 3- or 4-high, and of course, hundreds of blocks long)
  • It takes a lot of time, and (very likely) money too.
  • Some towns are too far apart. The closest towns are around 700 to 1000 blocks apart, but that's going by town spawns and not counting outposts and borders

I've made this waterway myself on SSP. It was only about 300 blocks long though.

So... post your opinions and criticisms! ...before I start building one myself that connects Tortuga to the Empire border, or Oceanview to Summer :D

Towns & Nations / Re: Nations Represented
« on: 16 Oct 2012, 00:06:08 »
Wasn't it in Tortuga where the nine pirate lords of the fourth Brethren Court... oh wait that was Shipwreck Island. Lol.

Meanwhile in the Land of Iron, the five ninja nations...

Anyways. Enough pop culture references on unity. Each nation's towns being represented will definitely be an opportunity to get creative. What, maybe have a design element from each town's spawn? Or something that represents each town's most prominent feature or business.

Umm, what about those towns that do not belong to nations? Would we need to have them represented too, or just count "being represented" as a perk for joining a nation?

294
It could very possibly be lag; I might've experienced it myself. When I jump and quickly place a block right where I was, and lag happens, the server will put me as still in the previous spot, but with the block already placed, so it pushes me on the side. This happens to me quite rarely though. I've experienced something similar when taking down 1x1x? towers---when I dig up so many dirts at once, and lag happens, the server put me as if the dirts weren't removed yet, and I take falldamage as I fall down to the highest unremoved dirt.

Either way, I don't mind  :D I'd invest in some Feather Falling IV boots and/or Protection armor though, to be safe :)

Guides / Le Noob Guide for 2x2 Jungle Trees (with pictures)
« on: 13 Oct 2012, 19:25:10 »
This guide is probably not for experienced players ^_^

Hi everyone! In this video I will be explaining how to properly chop down jungle trees in a town's tree farm. Huh? What do you mean I'm not on a video? Meh. Can't you just be imaginative for a sec?

So I checked out our tree farm and ermahgersh! A half-mutilated jungle tree!  :O
That's when I decided I need to write a guide.

The best way to decimate a Giant Jungle Tree is to start from the top down, so that you don't leave a single log unchopped (including side logs). If you do, the saplings won't grow when you replant. A big tree needs a lot of room to grow! There are several inefficient ways to get to the top:
  • bring ladders, or
  • make a 1x1 dirt column...
Other normal ways are
  • use Ender Pearls
  • use your [VIP] powers
Or simply scale the vines up. But...
...not every giant jungle treetop has an accessible vine path. And so we resort to other ways:
Dirt ledge!
Bring shears and patch 'em up!
If all else fails, carve out...

...a spiral staircase!!
Please, please, please strip away most of the leaves as you ascend. For two reasons: expose side logs, and drop saplings:
When you're done... just jump off and use Tree Feller on the staircase!

That's all, folks! Remember to finish your tree completely, and replant! Because not replanting goes against proper etiquette, which is frowned upon in most towny societies. You don't want a merciless TA to bring down the ./grief banhammer on you, especially if you're not even a resident!

I'll see you in the next video.  :)

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Banning x-ray texture pack

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Wool available in global shop.
« on: 12 Oct 2012, 22:53:35 »
Sheep isn't the only way to get wool, though. Since wool can be crafted using strings, if you find an abandoned mine with a cavespider spawner, then you're right on... (can turn it into an XP grinder... you'll get XP, and string!) also if your Excav is at least 250, you can get string drops from clay (plus brick sells for around 400 a stack so clay mining might be worth it). And lastly, string is available on the shop for 2Nz, so getting one wool would be worth... 8Nz.

Ok thanks :) I shall now commence the ...experiment ...erm... fun!
