Umm, I built a 110-high acro tower with 10 landings, in my town, with a bed on top. I also bought Ghast Tears and made Potions of Regen (2:00). So along with normal health regen, the Potion and town regen stacked. I also had Feather Falling IV boots, and did /home bed when I reach the bottom, which gave me a quick way to level up Acro. In my experiments, I gained around 7,500 Acro XP per bottle of Regen.

Before I continue leveling up ...erm, profusely... I'd like to ask--- is this considered an exploit?

(Saw a topic that asked for in-game screenshots but when I replied the site said the topic's too old so I made a new one)

I've the best fellow-TA's in all of Noobstown :D

My game crashed after Orbit showed me his tower/island (lethal fall damage!) and the town's Blaze farm. I log back in after 30 minutes and see snow blocks and torches on my plot. TA prank wars? Oh somebody's gett... (*raises sleeves*) But wait... There's more! I saw a chest and a sign. (*irritation subsides, gives way to surprise*) Ha! Neat-oh. Thanks Orb!

Guides / Musical Tower Completed! :)
« on: 1 Oct 2012, 17:12:48 »
Dedicated to El Capitan UnlikelyPirate and the town of Tortuga
Song: Klaus Badelt - He's A Pirate (Pirates of the Caribbean theme)

(Yep, I died twice while building this tower)

I've set the switch perms so that anyone in Noobstown could press the button. I would've done a video, but when I play it on my current laptop, all the notes clump together due to some lag.

The button:

The mechanics: an overlapping/alternating snake-like repeater sequence.

I still need to pretty up the place. I'll make a music note design on the side(s), and a signature mark that can be seen from the sky (for minimaps).

[VIP] Burai-dono called it a music box! ;)

Come check it out and critique!

Umm, press "t" or hit enter to activate the chat screen.

Then, as far as maps, there's a Mini-map mod[ification] that can be downloaded for the game. It readily shows you the layout of your current local area, which is more useful than a crafted map (in which case, you'll have to walk around and explore). (Google "rei's minimap" or "zan minimap" and the instructions to install them).

Umm. /afk doens't protect you from monsters, unfortunately. But you can protect yourself before doing /afk by quickly elevating yourself on a one-block column 3-4 blocks high, or finding a well-lit area.

Remember, /home tp's you to the home point (default is spawn), but /sethome resets it. I made the same mistake as you did on my first day! :) I ended up making another base elsewhere, but I found my original one after a while.

EDIT: Pressing enter will close the chat window, not activate it. The forwardslash, '/', is the other key that opens up the chat, with '/' being typed in already, for commands.

Elevator?

I'd reeeeaaallly like to build an elevator! But then, we'd need pistons :/ Or powered rails, which involve too much gold!
However, there should be at least a couple of other ways, both not involving redstone:
Water and half-slabs; and
Water and minecarts (which I still don't get).

Whyyyyyyyyyyy?!?!?!

Truthfully, this is the place where I first heard about this song. (On the in-game chat). I need to get out of the house more.

I agree. It's kinda hard to go back and forth between your inventions, Meep :) You can have it on one topic, and for each redstone circuit, make the title font bold or something, or maybe a separate post. That way, we'll have just one compendium of redstone creations to browse and discuss on.

...The point, at least as I am interpreting it (Fish can certainly give a better account since it's his idea), is to actively try and change how people play the game for the better, to get people to think beyond their own needs and building desires and look toward a more community thought process...

So in a sense, it's more of promoting a consciousness about the environment. Like a philosophical movement of sorts. "The purpose, rather than the execution." That's a nice perspective to it :) In fact, 5th on Fish's list:

5.  Spreading smart ideas, like going to the Mining World to mine and not leave floating trees around.
(emphasis added)

At any rate. Fish, you lead and initiate; we'll follow! We await your detailed instructions.

EDIT:
What if---for places that are beyond restoration---what if we build something really beautiful over it, instead of restoring the place? It will paint a contrasting picture of ruin vs artistry, in hopes that people will have more respect for the environment. (just an idea)

...Cal III quiz/test monday, physics and its complicated stuff...anyway ill try and finish it.
Yay Cal III!!  :D Good luck!

Umm. Thanks for making this thread, Ben! This really shows that there's a whole lot more to see in Noobstown than what one expects. Have Fish or Mitch tour you around Oakvale next time :) They gave me one and it was amazing!

Well I do want pistons to be activated, and just a little hint, can you tell me how to get pictures from minecraft
so I can post some pics of how it looks?
Hit the F2 key (screencap). Hitting the F1 key would un-display the item bar/chat/GUI so it might go better if you hit F1 then F2. The pictures can be found in the minecraft folder (in Windows, type in %appdata% in the Start Menu, then find the .minecraft folder, then the screenshots folder).  :)

I'm helping out in some capacity as well, Fish. We need some coordinates though. I'd suggest, if anyone finds a wasteland, post the coordinates here with a short description of what biome it is and what its surroundings are. Then we'll be able to pinpoint what places we're currently working on, so that restoration projects would be more coordinated.

And---Miner has a point. We're never gonna be able to restore everything. For some places we'll just have to maybe close it off with fences and put a sign that says "Wasteland" or something.

Those are my thoughts, so far. I'll get back soon when I've fashioned a formless clump of ideas in my head.

EDIT: I'll keep editing this as long as there are no new posts :), so stay... erm... posted.
Umm. Fish, can you make an official list of resources/blocks/things that we'll need? Saplings, stacks of sand, dirt, bonemeal... That way, people can know what exactly they can donate.

Oooh! And we'll need headquarters! People could just /tpa or /t spawn wherever the NURT office is, and maybe have the chests on /cmodify or /cpassword. Or do a shop plot where we buy stuff for 0 noobs (essentially donating).

I hear you, Matt! The first days were rough for me too, coupled with the unfamiliar elements of multiplayer Minecraft. Umm. To clear up the difference between mining and "Wilderness"-- they are two different worlds. It's true that you can mine on both of them; but in the Main World, Wilderness areas can be "claimed," and that's how towns are built. Meanwhile, in the Mining World, no land can be claimed; in fact, the Mining World resets periodically (each month?). Wish I could've known that before building a base there :p

Umm. Alternatively, you could go town-hopping (type /t list and /t spawn [town name]). (Teleports you to different towns; have a look around!) You can ask for town assistants/mayors to make you a resident, allowing you to buy a plot. (Each town has different prices). You'll have protection for your home because of the perms, which, to reiterate, can't be done in Mining World.

Ohh yeah. The bank--- your own personal bank account is not physical, but you can check the balance by typing /money or /res [your in-game name]. You can '/sell' what you've mined, and it automatically updates your balance. Even towns have collective banks; and once you're in a town you can do /t deposit [amount] to make a contribution as a resident.

Hope this helped :D

Hey Meep! I constructed your invention :)

Un-powered

"I suddenly have a hankering for zombie flesh."

I added a diode/repeater because the wire was too long.

I honestly have only a rudimentary knowledge/experience of redstone circuitry. Yet, currently I'm making a music box :)

Noobstown General / What's on your Noobstown Bucket List?
« on: 26 Sep 2012, 07:13:24 »
After tonight's hearty in-game trek with new friends from Oakvale, I realized there's a whole lot more to do here at Noobstown than just mine and get a 16x16 plot somewhere. This topic is where you can share your own bucket list ideas: Things you've always wanted to do, or even things you've already done but consider an accomplishment.

Be respectful!

Oh---and screenshots would be great!

I hear you, Fish. Real life catches up with all of us sometimes. (Now where are those resumes I need to send...)  :3 I'll send you a /tp request next time I see you on. I don't think I've seen Oakvale in its entirety yet. By the way, thank you so much for starting this topic! It gives me something good to read whenever the server is down. And truthfully, I never imagined I would be involved in such an online community as Noobstown.

"I need food!"
As a strict solo survivalist, I've told myself I'd never use chat except when I really needed it. Nor interact with any player. And yet, the monotony of grinding/mining/farming forces me to constantly monitor Gen Chat (and, in the process, get entertained by what they're saying). About a week ago, there was this one kid who asked about where they and their friend can call home. Nothing big; the mods took care of it. The kid still decided to build a house in the mining world. "Hm. Good luck with that."

The next day, I was in my secret hideout, harvesting wheat... When the same kid calls out, "I'm hungry!" And I dismissed it, thinking, "Meh. I survived two real life days on zero hunger. Deal with it!" After several minutes, the kid calls out again. "I need food!"

"Alright! Just this once, Gen Chat!"

That second request broke down my solo-play resolve, and I prepared for tpa with some food. For a few reasons: (1) I was just then harvesting wheat to make bread, (2) the kid's new AND lived the mining world, (3) the kid had a friend, and (4) nobody responded after several minutes.

The next thing I know, we were mining for diamonds, then end stone, then netherrack. Poor kid fell into lava three times. The next day, I found out he joined a town--one that I would eventually call my second home town. There in New Caprica, I made another friend, and the three of us would go fishing or do MA together. I'd jump in to lava for them any time---well, provided I have my current set of Fire3 D Armor and have water set for /home :D.

Deep in my heart, I'm still a solo-player. But when people need help and I got resources, it's hard to decline their request  :P

Noobstown General / Re: Mob mechanics
« on: 24 Sep 2012, 21:43:37 »
...is there a way to make so farm animals, (like non-spawner made ranches not disappear? I was starting an egg business, and to come back an hour later to find out all my chickens have de-spawned) like, not de-spawn? Not really well explained, I know, but I find it hard to put it into words.

So, "don't de-spawn naturally-occurring, non-hostile mobs?" Hmm. Ideas: Mob ownership, maybe? Or maybe have certain areas where the de-spawn is disabled? Sounds complicated to execute, but that would really help for ranchers and pet-owners. (Not that I'm one :p)

Noobstown General / Re: Mob mechanics
« on: 24 Sep 2012, 04:44:28 »
Gotcha. Thanks for the information! :)

EDIT: Additional information

I performed this brief experiment.

Question addressed:
"How much wool can I collect from a sheep spawner from the time they spawn to the time they disappear?"

Results:
- Grinding time was give-or-take 1 hour
- 526 wool collected from a ranch of 4 sheep spawners

Interpretation:
- A person can collect a little over two stacks of wool from a single sheep spawner in the entire life cycle of a sheep

Loopholes:
- This was assuming a worldwide, periodic de-spawn phenomenon. If the de-spawning is based on total number of mobs, then this experiment's result is meaningless.

Noobstown General / Mob mechanics
« on: 24 Sep 2012, 04:14:05 »
Just a question or two about mobs since they're back on now:

(1) Are all mobs made to disappear at certain times in order to regulate the number of mobs? (In light of people's pets and non-spawner ranches disappearing)

(2) Is breeding back as well?

Towns & Nations / Tortuga Large Farm Experiment
« on: 22 Sep 2012, 16:47:34 »
Key Information on Large Farm:
 - 2x2 plot
 - 2 floors each of sugarcane, wheat
 - 1 floor of every other kind of non-tree plantable items: melon, pumpkin, cactus, both types of large shrooms, netherwart, cocoa beans

Being a researcher irl, I decided to do a little experiment on just how much one could get from our town farm.

Steps:
 - emptied inventory, got iron hoe, started on wheat
 - sadly, was only able to finish 2/3 of one wheat floor (due to lag)
 - used GT 4 times
 - herb lv 116 (leveled up twice in the process)

Results:
 - over 12 stacks of wheat (789 wheat)
 - almost 6 stacks of seeds (371 seeds)

Interpretation:
 - going by this rate, one could get around 4,700 noobs from selling the wheat alone.

EDIT (24 Sep 12)
Did another experiment, this time on sugarcane:
Results:
 - 1 floor of sugarcane crops yielded 1131 sugarcanes (not all were fully grown)
 - At the current rate, this gave me 1,131 noobs
 - Raised my Herb by a couple of levels again (~128)

Interpretation:
 - Give-or-take 2.2k noobs just from sugarcane harvesting.

Also did another trial on wheat. I was able to harvest an entire floor, using GT about 6 times.
Results:
 - Too many wheat, that sold for around 2.4k noobs.
