We all know that good ol' line that comes from down under "A dingo took my baby!" well, yesterday at around 11:00AM GMT+10 in Australia, the Darwin courts have made a decision from the coroners report. Here is the article.
The verdict reached at a Darwin court this morning brought to an end the 30-year case that initially landed Mrs Chamberlain-Creighton in prison.
In an exclusive interview with A Current Affair, she told Tracy Grimshaw she wanted to put the saga behind her.
"If I sued the Northern Territory Government over this who pays? The public that had no choice in the matter and nothing to do with it. And there is a time when you say enough is enough."
Mrs Chamberlain-Creighton was given a life sentence after being convicted of Azaria's murder in 1982.
Her then-husband Michael Chamberlain was convicted of being an accessory after the fact and given an 18-month suspended sentence.
Their convictions were overturned after a royal commission in 1987.
The pair divorced in 1991 but continued to fight for an investigation that would prove Azaria was killed by a dingo.
“It’s such a vindication of truth …. but it’s almost like words fail you,” Mrs Chamberlain-Creighton told A Current Affair.
“The reason I kept fighting for this inquest and fighting for a dingo finding was because, despite the three other deaths or attacks by dingoes since Azaria died, there is still nothing by law until today to say there has been any sort of dingo attack.”
In 1992 Lindy Chamberlain received $1.3m compensation from the Australian government for being wrongfully imprisoned.
It is not known if Mr Chamberlain will be seeking further compensation after today's verdict.
Mr Chamberlain was criticised for his calm demeanour during the search for his daughter, even after he was acquitted.
“There were many times when I thought ‘why did Michael react like that?’," Mrs Chamberlain-Creighton said.
"But when I was married to him I learnt he didn’t react like other people. And when you know Michael, you just go ‘oh yeah, that’s typical of what he would do.’ And I suppose he did the same thing for me."
Azaria Chamberlain was nine weeks old when she was taken by a dingo at a campsite near Uluru, coroner Elizabeth Morris concluded in today's hearing. In her ruling, Ms Morris cited other examples of dingoes attacking children.
