I preferred the chest shops. This new system is simply too devious. I'd rather have a more straight-forward system instead of being forced to use the website while in the game.

Unless I heard wrong, chest shops will still exist.

Also...how hard is it to open a web browser? Minecraft doesn't exactly use up a lot of system resources.

I was under the understanding that this system would completely replace the chest shops. I'd love to hear I'm wrong.

Also... of course it isn't hard to open a webbrowser. It's about the nuisance that is alt + tabbing all the time between Minecraft and the site. When I play a game, I want to play the game, and not spend my time switching between all sorts of appendixes to the game. And not a lot of resources? Maybe if you can live with staring at 16x16 pixel blocks, but I prefer to use 128 x 128 texture packs to make the graphics sorta bareable.

Even with texture packs and full graphics options you won't use up that much relative to other games. I almost never have solely minecraft open, I'll do two games at once, a web browser and something on VLC, and that's just on the main computer.

I guess multitasking comes naturally to me so it doesn't bother me.

It's still not that much more effort than a normal chest shop to sell stuff and you reach a larger, more competitive sales market where you can actually move the stuff. It's definitely way easier and more convenient on the buying end.

First part, disagreed.  Minecraft asks more of my computer on full graphics than for example, Battlefield 3 on max graphics.

Second part, it will take longer to buy stuff with an online auction system and, with the fluctuating prices that come with an auction system, also more expensive for people if they buy stuff in bulk, which as a result leads to fewer people starting big projects because they will be more expensive, and discourage a lot of people.

Not to mention you'd have to be online when the auctions close as most people wait until the last second to bid.  Forget that noise.

It's a matter of CPU over GPU usage.

Most _optimized_ games require huge horsepower from the GPU but tend to sit on one or maybe 2 cores of the CPU. Most modern CPUs have 4+ cores, that means that multitasking is easily done since the OS will automatically assign other cores to different tasks.

Minecraft on the other hand requires a lot of RAM to keep the world loaded and CPU time to check all the "ticks" from the game engine while any decent GPU (even a motherboard-integrated one) will most probably sit at 20% load.

This basically mean that if your system has enough RAM and a good cooling system you'll have no problem multitasking.

If your system instead is prone to overheating (most common problem with laptops) you'll experience CPU throttling and slowdowns.

Chest shops will still be in-game, however the main means of economy will be through the auction.
I think the chest shops are still going to be predominant in terms of how the economy revolves, but the auction will definitely have an impact on the economy. I say this because not everyone uses the website, but everyone who plays uses the server. You need to use the website for part of the auction, whereas chest shops will never need for you to go to the website. Many people will just be like meh I can just buy from shop chests

True true, the thing is.. The on-site auction has a huge advantage: time. It is a lot quicker to log on, type in what you are looking to buy, and have it transfered than to run shop to shop after items. There will definitely be a lot of trading through the chests still though, it'll just be a matter of hopping towns to buy things since there will be no market district.
Yep time will be a nice factor... Wait no market district in Noobstown?! :O NOOOOOO

Nope, they never planned on adding a market district for a few reasons:

  • The new auction system is much easier and things can be tracked/monitored
  • Your plot on the market gave you an unfair advantage in marketing
  • Most players do not enjoy running shop to shop

1 and 3 are agreed with, but having the market district shop wasn't unfair, mainly because of the huge amount of work needed for upkeep of it. If you worked hard then the upkeep wasn't that much of a problem. The people who work hard are usually the ones who get the benefits (or should get the benefits at least). More dedication=more money=a place for your shop in Noobstown

I believe he was speaking more so about the location of the markets.  Those on the back row were usually passed over for those on the front row, no matter how fancy their shop looked :).  New players would just stop by the front row shops, maybe run through a few more and then get impatient and move on to mine or whatever.

You are correct in the face the system should reward those that put forth the effort.  With the auction system, everyone will be able to take full advantage of being able to sell their items to other players in a fair and equal setting.  Those that work a bit harder to keep up with the economy trends, pricing, value, shortages, ect... will be more successful in selling their items and earning a steady flow of noobz from their fellow players.

Chest shops will still be available to build and use if you like.  Perhaps a bargain mart for your fellow townies, or a warehouse for those that just choose not to use the online system, whatever your reasons, Foob stated before he would like to keep chest shops open and available for those of us (myself included) who like to build shops.

Basically, the auction system was built with the mindset of giving every player on the server the ability to sell their goods to everyone else in the most convenient and spam free way possible.  It may not be perfect, but I feel that once everyone has a chance to play around with it, you'll find it will strengthen the player driven economy and keep prices low so everyone can enjoy being able to buy and sell.

Hm, I don't really see big projects at risk. We had people in V5 that specialised in dealing with such bulkorders (without chestshops, some even had huge stockpiles of the most wanted blocks to fullfill orders faster). You told them how much you needed of a certain block and they told you the time they would need to get it. The prices were always quite reasonable and chestshops in V5 had the tendency to be empty when you needed huge amounts of blocks (i.e. 500 red & 250 white wool blocks or 500 stacks of sandstone).
My guess is that V6 will also have bulk-gatherers like these that are very willing to turn quite a profit on bigger orders, so the auctionsystem will not be the only way to do business. Especially in the period of time when all the new V6towns are being made (townprojects, streets, etc.) there could be quite a demand and therefore the chance for noob$ (and earning the reputation of being a reliable bulk-supplier).

I know what you mean, I bought stuff from people who we're starting over or quitting and prices were very cheap, I bought 6 chests of glass and bulk prices were so low, 1 noob for 25 pieces of glass.

Yeah, just adding the auction system is a good idea. Taking only the market district is the way to go. We will still be able to make our deals in the chest shop, but if you don't keep them updated often, the prices will be off of the market value. It seems fair now.

Hm, there might also be another benefit (although not everyone might see it that way). If there is no central Noobsttownmarketdistrict but people still use chestshops, most of these shops will be in the towns. This gives towns the opportunity to create their own markets. It also means that pricesensitive shoppers would look arounf the markets of different towns, increasing the number of people who actually visit other towns (giving the townworld a more "connected" touch. In V5 you rarely had a reason to actually visit towns on the other end of the map.
I just hope that teleporting to another towns spawn will be cheaper or even free to further increase this intertown-travel.

Since a few negative points were raised against the auction system, consider this (about the old market district):

-While there was a "no sold-out" clause (penalty => losing the shop), most shops where half empty at any given time. Not because the owners didn't care (ok, sometimes that was the reason) but because the demand was simply too big to be satisfied by a few shops.

-Abismal turnover. There wasn't a valid reason to keep everything in stock with the hard work mentioned and it would have been impossible anyway. The fee was easy to overcome and there was a finite amount of plots. The only ones loosing their shop were inactive or banned members. This adds to the point above.

-Having a market in most cases worked exactly like putting up a banner saying "I'm selling stuff, contact me".
Enforcing a different set of rules would end up with no one wanting a shop because it would become a chore.

-Since it's possible to make a lot of noobz just using the server shop, most of the time the shops were used to buy items and not to sell them. This adds even more to the demand and does nothing for the offer, crushing it completely.

Now, instead of having a market district, every single player can put stuff for sale in a few clicks.
Both demand and offer are satisfied at the same rate and the only way this could fail is if no one is willing to sell, instead of being unable to sell like before.

I can think of already 1 good reason that i'm happy to have the auction now:
Massive FPS drop when entering the market, because of the signs and other stuff like item frames.

Lol yeah I'll second that. But I'm gonna have to be in a town that'll probably give people with normally 200 FPS like 20 xD

There'll have to be a sign at spawn saying "Optifine suggested for ALL computers after this point".
