Can't Connect.

Due to the recent update I can't connect! I am running the latest version of minecraft (what I was told to do by some other players), is there a reason why it is always saying it is offline when my friends are playing? (I'm from Canada I don't know if that has anything to do with it)

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to be updating your version to get onto the server, since all the plugins and such need updated before the server itself can update as well.
