The in-game [Tip] says you'll get protected in a town. But to break it down, no one except you and select town staffers will be able to build and destroy on your plot in town. And as you've said, the amenities are great--a lot of towns have farms and animal ranches. A third advantage would be the friends you make, who can help you or mine with you, share ideas on how to build a project you had in mind, etc (although, many people have friends who live in other towns).
One advantage of a wildy home is you won't have to deal with plot taxes. (Some towns don't impose taxes though). Another, perhaps bigger, advantage is that you have a lot more space to build on, albeit at the risk of being griefed. But without the 16x16 plot constraint, your builds become much more creative. Our trusted mods will do all they can to restore griefed wildy houses, as I've seen them do (well, heard them, on Gen Chat).
(Some personal thoughts)
If I'm building a wildy home, I'd find a jungle area and make an underground base. Being underground makes it secluded, and the dense vegetation serves as a deterrent.
