Banning x-ray texture pack
« on: 13 Oct 2012, 03:12:54 »
Hey everyone,

I was just thinking, do servers have the ability to ban certain texture packs? if so i think the x-ray packs should be permanently banned from Noobscraft.  If this was done, it would remove a lot of confusion for the admins and mods, and also everyone would be forced into REAL labor--instead of cheating all the time.  Just a thought!

What do you guys think?

Thanks,

Blobfish

I'm pretty sure you can't ban texture packs. Considering, the staff catch almost every X-rayer anyways, I don't think that this would make too much of a difference.
Just my thoughts on this.

No, one can't do something like this. And the things that do "help" with it cause too much lag, which we don't want.

I once tried on an (incomplete) texture pack that made water completely invisible. This would expose clay completely, making it very much easier to mine. Would that be considered an exploit?

Yes, that would be considered cheating.

What about Optifine's Clear Water feature?

That would be considered too much of an unfair advantage, so I'd make sure that feature is turned off.

Even if you could do this, you still have the X-ray mod.

I just got to go in to this little conversation by saying the "Clear Water" on Optifine cant make you look under water like you were standing on the ground, what it does is it higher the water light level by about 30% - 40% Making it easier for you when you hunt clay, but, it is just light enough in my opinion to be consider a cheat, if the clay is far enough away it can not be seen.

Optfine is used to lower the lag on your minecraft and using "Clear Water" do clear a bunch of lag if you have set your Optifine settings correctly, I use this option and have not had any complains yet, it is not like you can cheat and see thru the world like you can with X-ray.

No, the server after what I have heard has blocked this mod as well with the flying thru the Zombe Fly Mod I think it is called, so the only thing you can use to X-ray is using a texture pack.

Well, see this is an issue too though, because sometimes they accidentally accuse other players of using x-rays, but really that person wasn't using one.  I wish x-raying was banned somehow so that the innocent weren't accused and that the people that do try to bring x-raying into Noobscraft can't join.

Someone got banned for using the X-Ray Mod just recently, I don't think it's blocked.

Well should it not be blocked? Having the X-ray mod is very more powerful, way more then the texture pack.

On the mod you can see thru the walls and find the ores even if they are blocked off ._.
(I have seen Avo's videos I know how the mod acts)

I certainly hope that with 1.4, and the mod support that is being incorporated, allows something like this to be done. The idea is that 1.4 will allow servers to tell a client that a mod is required, and then allow the client to download the mod from the server.

The mod could be like a punkbuster mod, that detects the mods installed and prevents the client from connecting to the server if blacklisted mods are enabled. Something like that could also detect the enabled texture pack and disconnect the client if it finds a blacklisted texture pack enabled.

I believe if we put an X-ray block on the server, it would cause problems for it, like lag and such.

If this was implemented in Minecraft/Bukkit servers, the rate of cheating would be deducted by loads, it is a great idea. You should suggest it somewhere on the Bukkit forums. The idea with the texturepack is a problem though because they're easy enough to create yourself with programs such as Paint.NET or GIMP, which are free art programs. Blacklisting certain textures wouldn't work because people bound to have customly made packs that haven't been released.

I've said before that installing something that "blocks" x-ray would create intense lag. And even if you manage to block the mod, people will create their own texture packs and do it that way.

I once had it explained to me that you could download and install something that would check if a person has invisible blocks, and then it would replace those blocks with say lava or obsidian, so that's all you saw. But that caused such intense lag because it had to check every block every person had, and when you imagine that times our daily of around 70 people? The lag we have now would be a small blip on the scale compared to that.

From what I can see, there's nothing we can do that would not cause intense lag. Which no one wants.
