Website Chat/Shoutbox

Just a small idea for the website to get a chatbox / shoutbox. so we can speak to people if we're checking a forum post or if we need some help.

This would be a good idea, even for when the server is down, instead of people pointlessly making multiple posts about the server being offline, they can chat through the chat box.

Like Jay said would be good for people to chat when the server is down.

I would like to add two things tho, instead of having it on the forums why not make it like its own page?
Example Link: www.Noobscraft.com/chat Or www.Noobscraft.com/chat/popout the first link can be so the chat is on the site and the second link on its own separate page
A example on the popout chat (Taken From Twitch):
http://www.twitch.tv/chat/embed?channel=yogscast&popout_chat=true

And try to make it connect to the servers chat, so when you speak in the chat it can say something like
[ForumChat]Miner_man123456: Hello In the game :) That would be awesome ;-)

I have thought about this many times however I feel it is pointless for the follow reasons:
  • We have a TeamSpeak for chatting; both voice and text can be used, this includes when the game server is down.
  • We have a server for chatting on.
  • We have a forum, if you want to post things you can do so in the different boards (as long as it follows the rules).

Adding more areas for users to interact with each other just means we have more locations to moderate. If you want to chat you can do so on our TeamSpeak. Therefore a site chat isn't likely to be added to the site any-time soon.

But..

  • You need to download teamspeak and if you haven't used it before, it isn't very noob friendly.
  • If the server was down this wouldn't really apply..
  • Posting on the forums also takes up time, people don't always look at the forum to see new posts, it would be a long, long process.

Isn't my choice obviously, just saying.

To address your points: Most players download Minecraft anyway, or at least Java to play on our server, thus downloading TeamSpeak shouldn't really be an issue, installation is just like any other piece of software you would normally use too. As for players who may be confused by TeamSpeak; it is a very simple program to use with extensive in-software and online help topics on how to do everything ranging from just the basics to very complex processes.

When the game server is down the TeamSpeak is normally still online so there shouldn't be an issue with a lack of communication, and the site is there again for any issues too.

Finally in regard to "posting takes time", it takes just as much time as posting something in a shoutbox/chat would? Plus saying that people don't use the site correctly is not something we can fix, if the users aren't going to do simple things such as view the latest unread posts (http://www.noobscraft.com/unread/) (thus allowing them to keep on top of the latest news/information) we can't force them to.

We are always welcome to suggestions and ideas on how to improve the navigation and workings of the site however a Shoutbox/Chat is just going to mimic (repeat) other features we already offer.
