I am having trouble creating an avatar for my forum profile.

I put this in the "Other" column since it isn't really a server or forum problem and is more of a me not really knowing how to work a computer problem. Ok so i want to add my skin face for my profile picture. I have a mac so skins open on the preview app. Before, when i tried to upload it, the forum didn't recognize it or something. I don't really know how to do this and I would appreciate someone telling me how to do it.
