Two Rocket Launches Today
« on: 25 Nov 2013, 20:34:19 »
Just a heads up space buffs.  There are 2 launches today.  One from the Balkanour (Russia) heading to the space station, and another one from the Cape (SpaceX).  You can watch live coverage of both launches here...

Currently at T-13 minutes and holding.  Best place to view the launch online is directly from SpaceX...

It's pretty windy here, hope we can get them to calm a bit to allow liftoff.

If any of you are watching live, what do you think the white plumes coming from the middle of the rocket are?

Another off-topic question, sorry..

What's your opinion on the movie Apollo 18? Could that type of stuff happen, or did it happen? The part where it tells you about the men's families being told different stories as to how they died/disappeared made me believe it >.<

Apollo 13?  Most of it is accurate, although how much I'm not sure.  I was just a kid during that mission.

Looks like we have an abort.  Usually, this means we are scrubbed for the day, but SpaceX sometimes does things a bit different.

I actually mean 18 lol, it was a movie made as a 'documentary', but I read that it's fictional, I wanted your opinion on it though, but I'm guessing you've not seen it?

No, I haven't seen that movie.  I think the final mission was Apollo 17, so I would have to say it is pure fiction.  Now you've got me interested and wanting to see it.  :P

It's called Apollo 18 since it's supposedly a secret mission that no-one was to know about :P

Actually, it is gaseous Oxygen.  The rocket uses liquid oxygen as the "oxydizer" for the engines.  Since liquid oxygen is very, very cold, it's boiling point is also very low.  As the oxygen boils off, it needs to be vented, and that is what you see.

No wonder I didn't know, lol.  :P  I think you might like this movie Jay, "Capricorn One".  It's old, but very suspensful, full of conspiracy, and entertaining.
