We have liftoff!
« on: 20 Mar 2013, 18:37:38 »
For those of you who may have an interest in space flight, there was a beautiful Atlas V launch from the cape yesterday.  I have attached a photo taken near my office of the liftoff.

Apologize for the poor image quality, had to reduce to upload.

Unfortunately Giga, no.  LOL

Here's a test for you space buffs.  There are 4 towers around the launch pad in the photo.  First person to post correctly what those are, or what they are for, gets 5,000 noobs.

I wish they were Verizon.  My phone would work better.  No, they are not cell phone towers, nor are they there for communications.

Good guess though, Sombrero!

Balance Towers? Full on guess, but maybe they hold some form of strong rope, that we can't notice in the picture :3 Idk... just guessing xD

JayJay that is absolutely correct!  Was that a guess, or did u know?  Central Florida is known as the lightning capital of the world.  We get lots and lots of lightning here.  Those towers are used to protect the vehicle from lightning strikes.  It's hard to tell from the picture, but there are actually wires that cross between the towers and from the towers to the ground to serve as a grid of protection.

5k noobs is coming to you.  PM me online and i'll send your way.

I knew it was for some type of weather so I guessed lightning because I don't see how it would help with rain or snow haha :D. I roughly remember being told about them by my physics teacher, I don't even remember how we got on to that subject xD.
