Noobstown General / Re: V6 top 100 not fair to students!?!
« on: 21 Mar 2013, 14:57:06 »
You could just as easily say it's not fair to those with jobs, those with families, or any kind of obligation. There's always going to be those who have to spend more time on real life than others, and there's no way to be "fair" to them all. I don't expect to be anywhere near the top 100, but I don't find it "unfair". I simply understand that my life is full of things to do, with Noobstown being just one of those things. Would I like to be one of those 100? Sure, it would be nice. But I don't expect it, I just expect to have fun and be part of a cool community. Anything else is just a bonus. :)

Noobstown General / Re: The mod /grief response
« on: 14 Mar 2013, 15:08:16 »
I believe the /grief command is designed to go into a que with the location information for the mods to work on when they have the time to do so. They have a lot to do, and some things require more immediate responses than other things. Grief repair is one of those things that can wait, since they have logs to use to be able to roll things back as well as know who did what.

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Suggestion
« on: 23 Jan 2013, 19:11:45 »
I honestly don't feel the server staff is doing there best, i'd like to honestly but I have to question it, not because of me just because of what i see every day. I've also asked for the proof of my ban to be shown and it was ignored. (In private)

I can't even have faith in the staff of a server, it's rather sad.

Having been staff/admin in another game environment, I'm going to say that in my experience this argument is almost always given when players expect totally different things than the staff/server/community are designed to give. You can go to a McDonalds and expect to be given high quality steak, but since it is not on the menu the error is in the expectations, not what is offered.

Communities of any sort cannot reasonably cater to every kind of person. It's just not realistic. All that means is that if you are finding that your expectations are not sufficiently in line with whats being offered, you are in the wrong place and need to continue your search for a community that is more in line with them. Sure, the community can be wonderful and get high marks in lots of other ways, but your expectations are yours, and only you can reasonably be expected to fulfill them.

Putting that task on others and being upset when they fall short is only setting you up for constant disappointment.

We all are, but the answer is still when Minecraft itself is fixed to prevent the duping issues.

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: no fire in towns
« on: 20 Dec 2012, 16:23:01 »
This is actually normal, so I don't think this is a server issue to support. I also don't think they are going to change it, because fire getting out of control in a town means far more work for the mods than even an entire town being griefed. Doesn't matter how rare the possible occurrence is, the level of support required when it does happen is massive. Easier all the way around to just not let it happen in the first place. :)

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Forum Community manager!!!
« on: 11 Dec 2012, 21:17:17 »
Having helped build, maintain, and run online communities for more than 10 years now, I fully agree that this is a good idea. I'd add, however, that such a job/title should be given to one of the admins along with a moderator or two as assistants, not an additional staff member dedicated to only the forums. It may mean that some staffers focus first on in server issues and some on forum support, but having them "cross-trained" and integrated into the staff structure fully is far better and flexible overall.

Noobstown General / Re: Failed To Login: Error
« on: 4 Dec 2012, 20:08:37 »
OK, I have to publicly apologize on this. For some reason, I thought I'd started this topic in a different board, and my first reply was based on the mistaken thought that this was a DIFFERENT thread started by someone else. I can only say that the pain meds my doctor has me on a clearly addling my brain worse than I thought. Totally my bad.

Strange, I checked the Mojong Support Center status page before posting and it looked fine then. Now it's reporting that the accounts website is down, but that both Minecraft and Majong logins are green. I'm guessing they need to update that page a bit so it's a little more accurate... ;)

I have this same error; I posted about it earlier on a Server Issues thread.

I should mention that I haven't seen any issues listed at Mojang's Support Center either.

Noobstown General / Failed To Login: Error
« on: 4 Dec 2012, 14:00:26 »
I've been getting "Failed to login: Error" messages all morning so far, however the online count has changed over time making me think others can connect. I haven't seen an announcement about downtime or an upgrade either, so I'm at a loss as to why I cannot connect. Any suggestions would be appreciated. :)

Noobstown General / Re: Odd question
« on: 21 Nov 2012, 01:30:51 »
I think I actually have this figured out now. Key mapping wasn't a big issue, it was more trying to figure out how to use the mouse to change facing on the screen while simultaneously holding down a move forward button. I actually found an old 4 button optical mouse in my old parts box that I mapped the move forward key to the forth button (I stopped using it because it's also wireless and eats batteries fast, but this is a good reason to drag it back out).

Thanks for the suggestion though Fatnoob. I wouldn't have thought of remapping to the mouse if someone hadn't said "keybinding", for some reason mapping in my head translates to keyboard, but binding translated as "any input device". I blame the pain medication, that's my story and I'm sticking to it... :)

Noobstown General / Odd question
« on: 20 Nov 2012, 23:05:51 »
I find myself in a bit of a frustration generating problem, I dislocated my shoulder and cannot play games that require me to use both hands until my doctor lets me out of my sling. This means I cannot play Minecraft in any form unless I can find a way to play with just one hand, preferably a way that doesn't require me to buy new software or hardware. So I'm asking the community at large here, any ideas?

Why would you resurrect a topic that's already over?

Towns & Nations / Re: Town price??
« on: 30 Oct 2012, 05:11:28 »
It is kind of steep, but the idea is to have active towns instead of inexpensive towns that get quickly abandoned. The price makes the investment more likely to be maintained. :)

Optifine is also acceptable (however I think a couple of the settings are considered a bit abusive, such as setting Clear Water on).

I think Inventory Tweaks has also been declared acceptable, and possibly What's My Light Level (WMLL).

Noobstown General / Re: When should Noobscraft update?
« on: 27 Oct 2012, 06:18:18 »
You can also look for a program called MultiMC. I've mentioned it elsewhere on here, but I'll provide the link this time (Moderators, if this breaks a server advertising rule, please edit it out for me):

http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1000645-multimc-41-windows-linux-mac/

You can set up multiple instanced of Minecraft, each with it's own set of mods, version, etc. It's very simple to use. I personally maintain three instances, the current vanilla version of Minecraft, the version I need for Noobstown along with approved mods (like Rei's Map), and a heavily modified single player instance of 1.2.5 (since a lot of the complex mods haven't yet updated to even 1.3.2).

Then it doesn't matter when Noobstown updates, you'll be able to play.

Noobstown General / Re: Im scared of being banned
« on: 27 Oct 2012, 00:40:19 »
Z_Miner23, I think the moderators will be far more likely to respond if you post on the Ban Appeal board and in the appropriate format. Personal observation, however, participating in something at an event that has nothing to do with the event and potentially disrupts the event (i.e. throwing snowballs around at a spleef tournament) is always bad form. Doesn't matter how many others participate, or if they were or were not caught, it's still upstaging the event taking place instead of respecting the flow of the tournament.

danielawsome777, no, you aren't the only one who's been afraid of being banned. It's very common to come to a new community, see bans taking place, and be afraid you might get swept up in it accidentally, or do something wrong without meaning to and get banned. There are three easy things to do in such situations, read the rules carefully, talk with others and ask questions (especially about rules clarifications if anything is unclear), and treat others the way you would prefer to be treated (not respond in kind to being mistreated nor extracting vengeance for being wronged). That's all that's really needed. :)

You may want to check out MultiMC. It makes downgrading easy, and maintaining a specific instance for Noobstown is well worth the effort.

Server Announcements / Re: 1.4 Release information
« on: 25 Oct 2012, 18:56:46 »
Doubtful. Minecraft updates mean all the mods the server uses need to be updated as well, as does the server software itself. Sure, they usually get a jump on working on those updates with pre-releases, but it usually takes several days at MINIMUM to get complex mods updated. The 1.3 update of Noobscraft occurred a lot faster than everyone expected, but it was still several days after the Minecraft update. :)

Server Announcements / Re: 1.4 Release information

It may help to use the MultiMC launcher. It can be used to maintain older instances of Minecraft (like for our favorite server here when Vanilla updates) among other things.

Yeah, anything that increases the amount of work the mods have to do is not a good idea. I'd even ask if making a list of locations that might be abandoned for them is something they'd want if they have their own clean up effort going on, simply because it IS work and they need to have fun time too (and too long a list isn't going to promote that :) ).

I think Fish's purpose is very admirable, and I'd like to call on people to look on the purpose rather than the execution to find fault with. Sure, there are obstacles and things that need checking with moderators to be accomplished to avoid breaking rules. Yes, the general server population won't care and may actively harvest what is being painstakingly placed to improve the look of the server. Of course there are other ways to actively help the server such as donating. All that is beside the point.

The point, at least as I am interpreting it (Fish can certainly give a better account since it's his idea), is to actively try and change how people play the game for the better, to get people to think beyond their own needs and building desires and look toward a more community thought process.

The obvious argument against this is that most people won't care. So what? That doesn't alter the value of the idea or that it may be worth doing. Nor does the difficulties faced in executing it make it any less valuable a task.

There once was a man who wanted tyrants out of his country. He took a stand in a way that most people thought was crazy, that would never work, that the payoff was so remote the effort wasn't worth doing. Gandhi succeeded, in spite of all the odds stacked against him. I think this idea has far less going against it than Gandhi did with his.

News / Niel Armstrong

Another one that hits me in the gut, Niel Armstrong passed away today. I personally like the honor offered him by the Fark headline: "One final step for a man. One giant loss for mankind."
