Guides / Advanced Towny Mechanics
« on: 22 Mar 2012, 23:45:58 »
In the previous guide, I talked about the simple things, like how to create and set up a town, expanding, residents, etc. However, great towns do not stop at the simple stuff. No, great towns have mayors or TAs that know how to use the Towny plugin to their advantage. What I hope to cover is a few of the most useful and relevant Towny commands on this server. If you do not know how to create a town, or how to manage one with the Towny plugin, please go to my previous guide: http://www.noobscraft.com/guides/creating-a-town-made-simpler/

A town's success is dependent on many things, but one thing that is crucial for the survival of the town is that it needs a mayor and TAs that know what they are doing. I do want to note, this is not a step-by-step guide. Think of it as a reference "book" to look at when you need or want to know about certain things.

Using the different plot types.
A great thing about Towny is that it offers something called "plot types". These not only allow mayors to better organize their towns, but also allows them to tax certain types of plots differently. You can even create preset prices for certain plots. Let's look at the different kinds, shall we?
If you were to type /plot set, you would see something like this:
Quote
/plot set reset
/plot set shop|embassy|arena|wilds|spleef
    A simple explanation of each:
shop -- This is just a designation for plots that should have shops in them. They can be priced and taxed diferently.
embassy -- Embassy plots are an interesting thing, and very useful, too. A plot with the "embassy" designation means that it can be purchased and owned by people from other towns! Beware, because if the town is in a nation, and it becomes an enemy of yours, you lose the plot! (Embassy plots can also be taxed and priced differently also)
arena -- Arena plots aren't usually sold, as they are most often used in places like, of all things, an arena. Pvp should be on by default here, even if the rest of the town is pvp off.
wilds -- Let's say you want your townspeople to be able to use a farm, but your town's permissions disallows that. To work around this, you would set it to "wilds". This means things like wheat, trees, sugarcane, etc. is destructible here.
spleef -- Spleef. A Minecraft classic game, now assisted by towny! Well, not really. This is more or less just a designation, saying "This is a spleef only plot". It also lets players destroy things like snow blocks, even when the permissions says otherwise.

Default pricing for plots
In the previous guide, you learned that you use /plot forsale [$] to set a plot's sale price. You can also create a default selling price for regular, shop, and embassy plots. If you were to type /town set, you would see this line:
Quote
/town set [plotprice/shopprice/embassyprice] [$]
So by typing /town set shopprice 500, typing just /plot forsale will set that plot's price to 500 automatically.

Toggling the toggles
There are a few key commands used by Towny called "toggles". These just have two options: on and off. So by typing /town toggle, you will see a list of different toggles for different things. I will go through a couple of the not so easy to understand ones.
public -- If it is on, this means that people not citizens of your town can use the /town spawn [townname] command to go to your town.
open -- If you town is open, that means that anyone can join and leave without being invited by the mayor or a TA.
mobs -- This does not mean friendly mobs. If this is on, all hostile mobs are allowed to spawn within your town's borders.

Taxes, taxes, taxes...
The Towny plugin also allows this terrib- I mean great thing called taxes. You can tax your residents a fixed amount, or a percent of their current bank account. You can even tax regular, shop, and embassy plots. To tax your residents, you would type /town set taxes [$], with your amount replacing the [$]. For example,
Quote
/town set taxes 10
You can also change it so your residents are taxed a percentage, by using /town toggle taxpercent. The 10 would go from 10 Noobs to 10%.
You can also tax the three taxable plot types. So if you were to type /town set, you would see this line, among others:
Quote
/town set [plottax/shoptax/embassytax [$]
By typing /town set plottax 1, you would set the tax for normal plots to 1 Nz.

Outposts
Outposts are places in the Minecraft world not directly bordered to you town. So if you want to claim a desert that is 1000 blocks away from your town's actual borders, you can claim an outpost. To claim one, type /town claim outpost. Remember to check the price of claiming outposts by typing /towny prices. This will claim that spot, and you can go around typing /town claim, increasing your new outpost's borders. You can also teleport to your new outpost by typing /town outpost. To set your town's outpost spawn, go to the outpost's homeblock and type /town set outpost.

Note: I will add more later!

Our nation is starting it's first project, but rather than just design it ourselves, we decided to use what he have: people! The objective is simple: design the best wheat farm, and win a prize!

The wheat farm must follow a few simple rules:

1) It has to be inexpensive(by Noobstown standards). "A farm made of diamonds?! Are you kidding me?"

2) It has to be stylish. We ain't takin no ugly thing, no matter how cheap!

3) It has to be user friendly. Easy to harvest, easy to replant. No mazes!

4) It must be able to grow at least 500 wheat. A farm for a single wheat is not funny.

And what does the winner receive for their trouble? Either...

10,000 Noobz!!!

or...

Super awesome title of your choice, and 4,000 Noobz!!!!(Talk to hchambers for more info)

A few recommended things that will boost your chances:

-Emphasis on vertical building. We use less space, more room for other stuff!
-If you make it 16*16, we'll be even happier!

-A wheat storage room. 1000 wheat, nowhere to store it. Not a good idea.

-Do not make it automated. Manual harvesting means double drops and exp.!
-Note: This isn't a requirement. Who knows, maybe we'll like it anyways!

And how do you submit your super-awesome design? You could...

-Make a YouTube video on how to make it and post it here.
-Build it in creative, and post the map for download.
-Give like 100 pictures (Not recommended, I will not reverse-engineer your farm)
-Build it in Noobstown, and show it to us!

Remember, nation residents only. Otherwise, the title prize is basically useless.

EDIT: Almost forgot, deadline is Tuesday!

Towns & Nations / The Forthwind Resurrection
« on: 11 Dec 2011, 20:55:41 »
Yes, we're back! Forthwind version 3 is up and running, and ready for some more action. Nothing big has been happening since we were more focused on getting the town up and running, but now that's over, we can get started! We do have a few things planned, and even something under construction, so stick around for more.

One important thing mayor Killerpie1 thought up is the Claim now, Pay later system. This has proved itself to be very helpful to those who need a home or shop now, and will pledge to pay by next week.

I guess that's it for now, so I'll be posting more as we go along!

Suggestions & Ideas / Idea: The essentials money system
« on: 2 Nov 2011, 02:37:38 »
Well, this isn't as much as a suggestion for plugins to be put in, but it is one anyways. Since Foob hasn't put in the iConomy plugin, why not use the money system that is already here? One of the plugins (I think it's Essentials) has a money system, allowing the user to sell items for cash, and pay others. It isn't as good as iConomy, where cash and items are trade-able both ways, but looking at how the currency system runs in today's nations, it is feasible.
Any comments, additional suggestions, etc. please post. I would like to know what people think!

Other / What do you do when you can't sleep?
« on: 20 Aug 2011, 12:34:20 »
So? Here is a timetable of how I deal with being unable to sleep:

1-4 Hours after going to bed = Temporary insanity(due to my inability to handle boredom)

4-7 Hours after going to bed = Finding ANYTHING to do

7-9 Hours after going to bed = Temporary insanity even more

9-wakeup                            = Laptop

Towns & Nations / The NEW Forthwind
« on: 20 Aug 2011, 03:42:42 »
We've been through a fire, lava flood, THE flood, and utter destruction many times over, but we're back! Forthwind is still technically under construction, but now because of our new outpost (conveniently placed on the old location of Balcombe), we are ready for even more!

Because plot space in the Forthwind Biodome(WIP) is scarce, we've been locked in our offices, pummeling ourselves hours on end to come up with a solution to our major problem, and, EUREKA!, the Balcombe Outpost is open for business, along with the skillful architecture of it's previous owners.(Btw, to whoever built the mountain fortress, you did an amazing job).

The Forthwind Bidome, from the roof of Mayor Killerpie1's House.

Our piston gate, to keep the chat command challenged out. (Built by Viciousvinny, Forthwind's official builder, and the most sane of all the TA's)

Speaking of sanity, this is our Insane Asylum / Jail.

Asylum Lobby / waiting room.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming:

City Hall entrance hall. The building where demons politicians work.

This was where we decided Casual Friday was illegal. Some serious(lol) stuff goes on in here.

Balcombe Outpost HQ. Nothing even goes on here.

The plots we stole borrowed took set up so far.

Businesses in Forthwind:

Killerpie1's Diner(if you can't read the text on the image for some insane reason). Open seven days a week, from: Whenever-the-hell-killerpie1's-on AM to when-he-stops-selling PM MTZ (Mountain Time Zone).

We have tons of open plots now, so we'd love if you would come and build a house or open a business!

More pictures of our wonderful town to come!

Noobstown General / NOW HIRING, CLEARING LAND
« on: 28 Jul 2011, 18:45:56 »
I need help clearing massive amounts of land, to build the first dome. This area is right next to the current Forthwind. I will be able to pay about 1000 Nz per day, plus anything you gather while digging and mining away all that stone. I will also provide free cake. If you would like to help, post below and I'll set something up.

Noobstown General / Another Massive Rollback
« on: 7 Jul 2011, 20:46:22 »
I don't want to be a bother again, I know you guys are doing all you can, but can you please do something about these rollbacks? Every time the server crashes, it goes back to the last known save. I understand that the simplesave caused some problems, but could you at least implement it on a less frequent basis, like every 2-3 hours? We lost a lot of work, at least an entire day's worth. If you can do something soon, before another crash happens, it would be great.

Other / Server V4 Biodomes
« on: 6 Jul 2011, 22:50:38 »
I am happy to announce that, coming July 30th (or whenever the server switches worlds), a few residents of Forthwind will be building something (hopefully) never seen on Noobstown before: an entire city encased in biodomes! We have already built a prototype glass dome, which is in front of the Forthwind city gate. The domes will be bigger, of course, to accommodate different buildings and purposes. I will be posting more as this project continues!

Noobstown General / We need an OP NOW.
« on: 27 Jun 2011, 08:37:26 »
Foob, some have been asking for a new OP, and you supposedly have been choosing. Today, the town of Forthwind was literally burned to the ground, left in ashes and covered in lava. Countless people died and lost everything trying to save what was left of our town. I don't want to seem rude, but I DEMAND another op. While the city burned, nobody was there to stop it. The last OP or Admin was you, foob, and that was hours ago. Please, I beg of you, make that choice soon, or events like this will continue happening.

BTW, the towny plugin not at all helped while Petudy and dopemagic singlehandedly burned my city to the ground with lava, killing numerous people.
