Noobstown General / Re: Missing Players
« on: 19 Apr 2019, 22:17:01 »
So I tried doing the /player command on some older people that played last summer, but they were all missing. I know where their wilds and town plots are (since I'd go over there and help) so I used my elyctra and flew over and I saw I was spelling the name correctly. Did these people get removed or is the command not functioning correctly? It used to work even if they're online. (In case your wondering, I did it so I could see if they were on recently and I wasn't so I could see if they still played)

Edit: Same things with gifts. Tried sending it an active player and it said they have to be online before to be able to send a gift.
This appears to be a bit of a bug with how we're processing requests for users that haven't been on since they've updated their Minecraft username. If a player updates their Minecraft username it's possible that we've fetched their new name automatically and as such commands such as /gift ... and /player ... will be working with their new Minecraft username. If you try using their new username then hopefully those commands will work.

I will look into the feasibility of resolving this though, because I understand it might be a tad confusing/annoying to have to look up their new name.

If you need assistance with working our a player's new username then let me know.

Support / Re: 1.13?
« on: 19 Apr 2019, 22:10:58 »
I was wondering if there are any plans to update the server to 1.13. 1.13 has been out for almost a year.
As others have said, we're still waiting to ensure stability of all of the different plugins we use. Unfortunately I don't make them all, and as such we have to rely on other people at the moment. There has been recent information about 1.14 potentially being released soon too, so it's likely if that's the case that we'll skip 1.13 and go straight to the latest version when we can. I am still aware we're quite behind, and will look to update as soon as it's possible.

Competitions & Events / Happy Easter 2019!
« on: 19 Apr 2019, 22:01:29 »

The annual Easter Egg Hunt on Noobstown is now under way!

Over the next few weeks, when you're on the server, a message will randomly appear in chat when an Easter Egg (or other Easter related thing) spawns near you. You then have several minutes to run around and try to find the Easter Egg before it disappears. If you do find it, simply click it and you'll be given the Egg as a collectable head. Be on the look out too, because there might also be other Eggs around at random, even when you don't get the message.

This year different types of egg will spawn in different biomes throughout the worlds, so be sure to explore around if you want to collect them all. There are different types of eggs based on the biome it appears in. There are a total of 19 different things to collect (including 17 Eggs). If you manage to get all 19 from this year, keep hold of them and let me know (PM me or reply to this post); there's a bonus special prize for collecting them all! I'll leave exploring the different biomes up to you all, but if assistance is needed finding some of the different types then after a few days I'll post a list of which biomes each egg type spawns in.

It's also 2x mcMMO XP from now and throughout the rest of Easter weekend!

I hope you all have a Happy Easter!

The event is now over, it's still 2x mcMMO XP for the rest of the weekend though!

Thank-you to everyone who was there to celebrate together, had great fun!

I think I have to miss the activities:(. Maybe I can get lucky and hop on later. Is there an estimate for the drop party? (Timewise)

Edit: or when the event ends?
The event is now over, it was nice to see you there for part of it :).

There are no votes showing in the Top of the Month. Is this a glitch or is voting being removed from the top of the top calculations? Don't worry, I'll keep voting!
Sorry about that, thank-you for informing me. All votes were being recorded and saved it just wasn't correctly displaying them. I've sorted this now so the page is showing the correct values.

Competitions & Events / 8 Years of Noobstown Celebration!
« on: 17 Mar 2019, 21:05:52 »

To celebrate Noobstown turning 8 years old tomorrow (Monday 18th) we'll be having some small events on the server on Saturday next weekend (23rd March) starting at 10pm GMT (What's that in my timezone?). The activities will be based on how many players are online taking part on the day, but there a range of possible games planned; including a Drop Party!

Plus we're doing 2x mcMMO XP all this week, and on the Birthday itself (tomorrow, Monday 18th) it'll be 4x mcMMO XP!

February's Top Players of the Month contests are over!

All players in the Top 10s of every category will get gifted rewards. See the announcement about the rewards at: https://www.noobscraft.com/server/top-player-rewards/. The top 3 spots of each category get a special item for their position, plus every player in the top 10 gets a number of Reward Tokens based on their position; on top of that every top 10 player gets a single unique head for that specific month! The Reward Tokens can be traded in at /warp top!

Congratulations to all of the winners! March's contest is well underway now, you can view your positions throughout the month at https://www.noobscraft.com/top/ or using /top in-game! The winners for February 2019 are listed in the reply below!

February is the first month that we've rewarded mcMMO XP directly rather than mcMMO Levels; feedback is always welcome if you think this is a better system, or if you think it could be improved further.

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: What should be done
« on: 9 Mar 2019, 17:19:47 »
...
first of all if someone maxes out a skill they can't get the mcmmo for it so they can't grind that skill so i would raise it to 5000 since you can't get xp for being max or i might be wrong,
...
Unfortunately this is how mcMMO works as it is right now, once you max out you don't gain anymore XP. I'm reluctant to simply increase the max level because we'd just hit the same issue again in a few months once a few players hit 5k instead of the current 4k max, and it would potentially not be best of fun for those players who feel like they've achieved the max to then be told they're no longer there. To try and accommodate for those few players who have maxed out some of their skills, I have been looking in to some options:
  • Potentially to allow players to choose to reset back levels for some sort of perk (I realise some people might not like this idea though).
  • Possibly to still record XP gains for those who hit the maxes, but for it to not effect their mcMMO level, so they'd just gain XP on top of their level, but the level itself would never change; this would allow them to still take part in the Top of the Month for mcMMO too. It isn't as easy for this to happen though because it would involve making adjustments to mcMMO (something that we don't currently make), which is why I'm having to investigate the viability of this.
I am definitely aware that the limit is definitely limiting things though.

...
i think there should be more admins too help run the server
...
I currently have no plans of expanding the admin team here, Noobstown is a project ran for fun for free for those who want to enjoy themselves too. I appreciate that because it's only really changed during my free-time that there have been limited events, and changes more recently though. I'm also not aware of anyone at this time that I believe would be able to offer more than they already can, and that is willing and suitable to take up the admin role for free in the same capacity as we previously had. It requires a range of skills from more technical knowledge of how things work, to being able to support the gameplay itself. The current staff team is already able to do a lot of the tasks that are required for continued operation of the server.

...
idk personally there should be weekly updates to the server to make it more fun like mini games such as mob arena or something like tnt run or spleef for the game when a certain amount of players join the game starts so when your bored you can play mini games maybe get 1 250$ gem then maybe have monthly mcmmo events
...
In July last year we introduced the Top of the Month contests to introduce a monthly competition of sorts that everyone is automatically taking part in, which includes rewards for mcMMO and loads of other things too (including Gems as prizes too if you want them). Players are more than welcome to produce their own games and play them with others. We have also had quests/other events going on too, and will do in the future too. I appreciate that there have been less direct staff ran events where things are scheduled and you turn up to take part in games, etc. though.

The quote Diamondpuppy808 put in the reply above also explains a little more about this.

...
maybe allow more events get players like monthly ender dragon killing events when you beat it you can get a cool head for participating or maybe drop it from the sky then someone has a chance to get the egg
...
You're welcome to kill the ender dragon at any point, they can be re-spawned by anyone using End Crystals. You get the Minecraft XP from this as a reward. If players want to arrange a monthly get-together to fight it together, if you discuss it with me first and others are willing to take part then I'll happily provide a reward for organising it and doing so.

...
then maybe every other month should be a quick drop party to start getting more players to play
...
I appreciate that people love the drop parties we do, but if they were done constantly then they'd become less of a big event, they'd just be another regular thing. Plus people might be less inclined to go to them if they knew there were just be another one in a few weeks. Having them limited to the bigger events through the year makes them more of something to look forward to and means that more stuff can be given out at once allowing the single events to last for longer.

...
get rid of the mcmmo gains cause the more you play it goes down so then players relog to get max mcmmo gains thats why floris relogged alotand
...
As has been discussed previously the gain reductions should only be for once you're earning extremely high amounts of XP, this is to encourage you to diversify skills. It should not be something you notice too often based on normal fair gameplay, and if it is then I'm open to adjusting the limits on things as I said previously when it was introduced.

Cheating and abusing a bug to bypass these limits (or any other feature) is not allowed, and if you're caught clearly abusing any bugs and not reporting them you will be punished.

...
maybe when a players reaches certain goals they get i little money or a cool head say when they hit 1000 powerlevel they get a head or 5000 powerlevel they get anthor head so it will keep players wanting to see what the next head
...
Rewards for reaching milestones for mcMMO and activity (and other things) is something I've wanted to add for quite some time now, it is a reasonable amount of work to make it fair and to set up though. You can see the existing work item relating to this at: https://www.noobscraft.com/work/full/activity-rewards/ I've also added an update to explicitly list the mcMMO idea.

...
will be lastly redo the voting system instead of voting and being the top voter you can get other things such as maybe coins to get a /hat or /workbench/craft just all cool part time thing
...
The rewards for Top Voters now come under the Top Players of the Month contests. From this the top voters do earn more than just Noobz, they get Reward Tokens too. You can trade in the Reward Tokens for a range of different things, and I'm open to adding further rewards for any of the categories too.

...
then put more voting urls so you can get more advertising and get more players instead of getting 1 players a week you could get 10 players a week imagine
...
I appreciate that it might seem like just adding Noobstown to more voting sites might increase the overall advertising of the server, but based on wider Minecraft discussion it is unlikely that it'd have an overly big impact if we added Noobstown to further listing sites as we'd have to start from fresh on those sites. I will look in to further options for voting though, and maybe we can trial some other sites and see how they go.

I always appreciate any honest feedback any player has, I appreciate you taking the time to write your suggestion and put forward some ideas. I'm willing to discuss any ideas you've got and welcome any reply to my responses above.

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Toggle Notifications.
« on: 9 Mar 2019, 16:22:11 »
You know those notifications that pop up in the chat when you kill a mob? The ones that tell you how many nbz you get? Having a way to turn those off would be Grade-A Fantastic. It makes it really difficult to read the chat when there's a lot of people and a ton of notifications.
I have noticed this can be slightly annoying, I completely agree. I've thought of a few potential solutions beyond just adding a toggle:
  • Batch messages so they only show every so often. This could mean say every X mobs or after X amount of time you get a single message listing all of your kills and the total you've made from it.
  • Move messages from the chat to the action bar (the area just above your hotbar) as we've already done with the auto-sell messages.

Because of the way that these messages are shown at the moment it's not just a case of me flicking a switch for this to happen immediately, but is definitely something possible and it shouldn't be too difficult. I've created a work item to address this: https://www.noobscraft.com/work/full/reduce-mob-killed-messages/. Great idea!

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Spawners
« on: 9 Mar 2019, 16:01:32 »
The ability to get hostile mob spawners has been brought up several times in the past.

I'm open to discussing it, but my view was that it might not be a good move because it could become too overpowered. Hostile mobs are supposed to be slightly dangerous to tackle, if you can just farm them by standing around and letting perfectly positioned spawners do the work it might ruin some of that gameplay. You can still use and farm naturally appearing mob spawners, but they require a reasonable amount of effort to set up and aren't normally positioned such that you can get several spawners going perfectly at the same time; something which might be possible if you could position them yourself.

As I'm sure you've seen already there are several players who have made natural mob farms by building dark rooms or spawning towers; is there a reason why you'd prefer a spawner to this method?

I could see this working, right up until blaze spawners. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't want to play in a noobstown where when I visit someone, blazes fly in the sky and shoot fire at me.
I think if it were ever possible that the spawners would have to be limited to be used in worlds where those mobs spawn potentially. This could avoid that possible issue.

1. Mobs can only spawn in the chunk the spawner is placed. (Spawned mobs I mean)
Spawners already limit spawning to a small area around them. See https://minecraftwiki.net/Spawner#Mechanics, but if added then potentially limiting them directly to land owned by the owner of the spawner might be a sensible move.

2. Need at least 500 mining and 500 swords to mine a spawner.
I think if it were possible they would have to be a purchasable item like the animal spawners at the moment rather than from mining or silk touch, etc. however the idea of limiting the purchase based on mcMMO levels does sound interesting.

3.The spawned mobs give no mcmmo? Idk about this one. I personally would prefer it to but idk
Hostile mobs spawned from spawners don't give mcMMO XP at the moment, this is somewhat to encourage naturally fighting them.

I'm open to a discussion about adding them, if there is overwhelming support then it's something I will consider again.

Support / Re: How do I get VIP+?
« on: 23 Feb 2019, 19:49:55 »
In the past VIP and VIP+ were available for purchase using real money to help support and maintain the running of the server. I now fund Noobstown almost entirely myself as a hobby. We currently don't have an available store offering the purchase of player upgrades or other things. There have been discussions regarding the return of a store for a while now, but for reasons others have mentioned it hasn't returned yet.

We haven't removed any paid for items from players who fairly paid for them in the past, so all previous VIPs are still VIPs, but we don't have a public store to upgrade at the moment.

If you contact me via PM on the site we can discuss options for VIP and VIP+ if you're interested in it though.

« on: 13 Feb 2019, 18:07:38 »
So I was going through and was trying to edit a post that I last edited last year, and it wouldn't let me. Am I blind, or is it programmed so you can't edit after a certain amount of time?
There is a limit of a few hours; after which you can't edit posts, correct. This it to try and ensure that conversations don't become confusing with sudden changes and so quoting makes somewhat sense.

If it's a relevant update you're welcome to post a new topic or reply to an existing one though. If you think there is a valid reason why you might need to edit something which is much older I'm open to hearing and potentially changing the timer.

Server Announcements / Top of the Month - mcMMO Changes
« on: 1 Feb 2019, 19:14:44 »

Based on feedback the Top of the Month categories relating to mcMMO have now been changed; starting from this month (February) all mcMMO categories (the total and each skill) will now use mcMMO XP directly instead of the levels gained.

All mcMMO Level categories have now been replaced with an equivalent mcMMO XP category; including Power Level which has been replaced with an XP total.

As January's contest has already finished it will use the old levels categories still, but moving forward (including February) we'll be using mcMMO XP instead! Moving forward the rewards relating to mcMMO (trades at /warp top) will be adjusted to the new XP categories too, plus new trades will be available to begin with to allow you to switch from the old levels rewards to the new XP one.

Based on feedback, hopefully this will more fairly reflect the effort put in to each of the skills. We're always open to further feedback and suggestions and will continue to see how the different categories work.

The Top 10s of January's contests will be announced this coming weekend.

...
So I can actually say something now. You don't plan to NOT preserve them, but unless this truely is the final version of NC, then they'll eventually be lost.

Remember v5, how people wanted to preserve them because we knew it was going to be deleted and were told no. And then you show us that museum world that was nearly impossible to get around or FIND your builds. Not a good sub.

Also you deleted that as well soo...? And didn't allow anyone to download the world or anything even if there was the whole "promise not to make your own server with our map" bull.
...
The current version of Noobstown has existed for coming up to 5 years; as I said in my reply above, we have no plans for a full reset of things like previously ever again. The current version of Noobstown (originally referred to as V6) was originally made and planned in such a way for it to be our final version of Noobstown, with changes simply being made around the fundamental Wilderness and Town systems; and expansion if ever needed. As was discussed at the time; the change away from V5 was needed to clean up Noobstown's worlds and to allow for continued gameplay, this isn't something we need to do now (or should ever need to do moving forward), now that we have the Wilderness and Town systems which can clear and reset inactive/unused land as needed, and because our custom world is enormous compared to the previous ones.

I'm sorry that an important change we made almost 5 years ago has caused you concern; but I believe our track record of keeping the builds of active players is pretty good. We have got hundreds of players' builds which have existed for literally all of those years which you can still explore now, and can be used and built upon by their owners.

...
I was asking to be polite, but I had already saved my builds.
...
I'm not entirely sure why you posed your original question in terms of asking if it was allowed or not then. What were you attempting to gain by asking if you had already acted, it would have been too late if I'd said it wasn't allowed? If you think that something might not be allowed it's best to confirm before attempting it.

As I said in my reply above:
...
From our end there is currently no way to export your individual builds from Noobstown and this isn't something we plan on offering. As is standard with Minecraft servers; if you want to build and play on Noobstown then that's where your builds will sit.

what happend to old spawn, vip spawn, old version world area.
The old spawn town still exists at /warp town, and TidalDawn suggested it's the town Noobstown still. Or you can use the Town portal at the new spawn.

It was changed quite a while ago now to the quick portals area to allow for much quicker and easier access to all of the different parts of the server. It's hopefully easier to find the different main worlds now.

If you want to access the VIP area of Noobstown you can get to that using /warp vip too.

Noobstown General / Re: What's getting updated?

Hi. I have tried to log on several times and I get a message saying er are updating and to get more info at the website. So, what's being updated?
I'm very sorry about the downtime. The server is now back up and you should be able to play as normal now.

To explain a little about why you couldn't connect: Earlier today, as is routine, I updated the versions of several of the plugins we use (these were just routine updates/bug fixes, any big feature changes will be announced as normal), during this quick change the server was put into maintenance mode which prevents connections while we work on things. It appears that after this downtime the server didn't correctly re-enable access as it normally would, preventing access with the update message you'll have seen. I'm very sorry that this happened and I'll be looking into why it didn't allow access like normal and will implement changes to try and prevent this from occurring again.
