Slow tree growth and leaf decay?

I tried asking in global/help chats but there was so much chatter, I didn't really get a clear answer.

I haven't been playing regularly since before the 1.0 release, so this might have just been a change with the patch.  However, I've noticed that trees don't grow at all (I've idled, spent lots of time mining below in the same chunk area, etc.) and a lot of leaves don't decay.  Is this a server thing or a patch change?  The only times I've been able to get trees to grow is with bonemeal.

Nope, as far as I know the server runs fine with rendering the trees. Although it does take a while for them to grow but make sure there is plenty of room around the trees (atleast 5-7 blocks away from the sapling) and the leaves do disappear eventually, again it just takes time :)

Just be patient with the more tree's :)

Whoops lol, that was a typo on my behalf, It meant to say "Just be more patient with the tree's" But anyway its ok for the quick response :) I like to help out if I can :)

We altered the growth/decay time to reduce stress on the server and increase performance.

To be honest, I have spent so much time on this server that everything here seems normal   :P
