A question about Towns
« on: 22 May 2013, 15:05:06 »
Pardon my ignorance, but I don't know much about towns and nations. I know there are 40-something towns and 4 nations, that one would join a town for protection and community, but not much beyond that.

I typically travel between my home, the spawn, and the mining world. I have explored the world a bit and wandered around by foot and by boat. I have been to the edge and back, but I haven't come across anything that I envision a proper town would look like. Can I visit these towns and how would I get there? What town has the best builds?

I'm not the most interactive player and I tend to ignore the chat and messages that pop up unless I'm looking for something. Partly because I play on my TV while sitting on the couch and the text is hard to read. And also partly because I like to do my own thing most of the time. Should I join a town? With the forthcoming new version I don't need to worry about griefing anymore, not that it was a big problem anyway.

Bottom line: I'm intrigued by towns, but don't really know what to expect or if I should bother.

Edit: I just looked on the map and there appears to be some very large towns out there. More like what I would expect.

Towns are useful for a few reasons:
  • Protection - You, town staff, server staff, and possibly your friends are the only ones that can do anything on your plot.
  • Proximity to others - If you build something really cool out in the wildy, it's not going to get seen too often. Within a town, you've got neighbors in addition to people that visit towns. That said..
  • Shop traffic - If you so choose to use chestshops, placing them within a town is crucial. Again, you're going to get more traffic within a town so you'll get more people browsing your chestshops.
  • Town utilities - A good portion of larger towns will have publicly available places for you to farm, butcher, woodcut, enchant and so on.

There's other reasons, sure, but these are pretty much the core reasons. As to your question about getting to them, all you gotta do is use the command:

/town spawn [town name]

You'll be charged 5 nbz for teleporting to any town, but it sure beats walking there. You'll have to judge for yourself which towns you like better.

Living in a town has many more negatives than benefits IMO.  Myrf has hit on the benefits.  Here are some negatives:

1.  Space is extremely limited for your builds.  A typical plot is very small in width and depth and most towns limit how high and deep you can go with your builds.

2.  Too many rules in towns.  It's kinda like living in an association.  I live in one irl and it sucks.

3.  Taxes.  Many towns charge taxes, or you're expected to contribute to the town bank.

I've tried both and without question living in the wilderness (at least in V5) is way better than living in a town.  As far as "protection" goes, just lock your doors and post signs.  If someone griefs, just file a /grief report.  Moderation can restore everything griefed in a split second.  I've had stuff griefed, but it isn't a serious problem IMO.  As far as resources go, you can easily make a small melon and wheat farm underground to completely sustain your food needs (I have both).  Spawners can be purchased for sheep wool (I have one).

That's my two cents,

Thank you for the valuable feedback. I just visited one of the larger towns and while I did like the animal spawners and large crops for easier herby leveling, it did seem a tad...crowded, I guess. Certainly some impressive structures. If I did join a town I would need more room or more green space between plots. I don't have a problem with taxes or rules if they are reasonable.

I'm more then capable of making my own large crop fields. The only headache right now is access to animals, although at the moment I have plenty of wool and leather it could be an issue if I do a large build. I didn't know you could buy spawners.

I haven't had a real problem with grief yet. Just one instance and I did file a /grief report although nothing came of it that I'm aware of. Maybe because I immediately rebuilt what was broken.

With V6 coming, living in the Wilderness seems more palatable provided I can buy enough chucks to keep my neighbors at bay. I'll reevaluate towns when the new version is here.

Yea, prof, the biggest problem i have is lack of space and neighbors too close.  I need my space.  I don't want to even see a neighbors building, so I need enough land to put trees between me and my nearest, hopefully far away, neighbors.

:D

Have fun,

Max
