I didn't make it into the top of the top, but I'm in the top 3 as well as being in the top 10 for many other categories. Is that right? I may not understand how it's exactly calculated then.
You are right that you were in the top for quite a few categories, but not the Top of the Top. I've not completely explained how the Top of the Top Points are exactly calculated because I don't want people to specifically target gaming that system and working it purely to get that up. There are however a few reasons for this:
- The scoring is not just based on your positions, but is actually based on your distance away from people in each individual category, so if you're only just beating someone below you then that's worth less points than being dramatically ahead of them. Your score is based in relation to the other players in each category, so other people doing well means you have to do even more to get higher and higher.
- There is weighting of different categories based on their perceived difficulty, and range of score each month, so for example: voting holds a bigger weight than blocks mined, because it's harder to gain a massive score in voting since that is limited and we want to encourage voting. Additionally because there is a "Total mcMMO XP Gained" category which is a sum already, and there are so many mcMMO categories; all of the individual mcMMO specific stats are weighted lower to avoid mcMMO essentially dominating the top scores, and making other categories irrelevant.
- Those in the top 3 of each category get bonus points for being in the top 3, again this bonus is also based on how far away they are. So getting from position 4 to the top 3 is a potential reasonable jump in Points.
In May you were in position 14 for Top of the Top.
I'm willing to look at and review the specific calculations if there is a general agreement and others think the current process is slightly unfair though.
